Pandas UDF: Scalable Analysis with Python and PySpark
Over the past few years, Python has become the default language for data scientists. Packages such as pandas, numpy, statsmodel, and scikit-learn have gained great adoption and become the mainstream toolkits. At the same time, Apache Spark has become the de facto standard in processing big data. Spark ships with a Python interface, aka PySpark, however, because Spark’s runtime is implemented on top of JVM, using PySpark with native Python library sometimes results in poor performance and usability.
In this talk, we introduce a new type of PySpark UDF designed to solve this problem – Vectorized UDF. Vectorized UDF is built on top of Apache Arrow and bring you the best of both worlds – the ability to define easy to use, high performance UDFs and scale up your analysis with Spark.

STACK OVERFLOW DATASET ANALYSIS
The document describes a Big Data project analyzing the Stack Overflow dataset. Key points:

Understanding Stack Overflow
In this talk we briefly discuss some of our recent studies of Stack Overflow, a popular Q&A site targeting software developers. As opposed to studies of software artefacts discussed at Stack Overflow (e.g., APIs or programming examples), we focus on studying individuals active on Stack Overflow---who are they, what motivates them, and what affects their participation in Stack Overflow discussions.
Our findings indicate that Stack Overflow is no different from other communities of software developers in terms of gender representation but is significantly different from them in terms of gender engagement: controlling for engagement duration women and men ask and answer comparable number of questions, but women disengage faster. We conjecture that faster disengagement of women is the less pretty consequence of gamification mechanisms embedded in Stack Overflow, the same gamification mechanisms that provide developers with faster answers than ever before, attract numerous contributors and ultimately catalyse software development.
As an additional contribution we present genderComputer, a tool inferring gender of an individual based on her/his name and location.

Improving Low Quality Stack Overflow Post Detection
This document presents research on improving the detection of low quality posts on Stack Overflow. The researchers analyzed metrics related to post quality, readability, and popularity to build a classification model. They applied the model to refine the review queue, reducing its size by up to 44% while increasing the percentage of low quality posts it contained. Their best approach significantly enhanced the prioritization of posts actually requiring human review.

This document describes an assignment to analyze response times for questions on Q&A websites like StackOverflow. Specifically, it involves analyzing questions from a gaming StackExchange dataset and calculating features related to tags for each question, including tag popularity, number of popular tags, number of active subscribers to tags, and percentage of subscribers who are active. Response times will then be plotted against these tag features to analyze correlations. The deliverables are to calculate the features for each question programmatically and generate box plots and CDF plots of response times for each feature.

In this talk, I will describe:
+ The physical architecture of Stack Overflow. How many servers are there? What is their purpose and what are their specs?
+ The logical architecture of the software. How do we scale up? What are the main building blocks of our software?
+ The tooling system. What supports our extreme optimization philosophy?
+ The development team. What are our core values? What footprint do we want to leave as developers?
Mining Sociotechnical Information From Software Repositories
A large amount of data is produced during collaborative software development. The analysis of such data sets a great opportunity to better understand Software Engineering from the perspective of evidence-based research. Mining software repositories studies have explored both the technical and social aspects of software development contributed to the discovery of important information about how software development evolves and how developers collaborate. Several repositories store data regarding source code production (version control systems), communication between developers and users (forums and mailing lists), and coordination of activities (issue tracker, task managers, etc.). In the open source world, such data is available in large ecosystems of software development. Platforms such as GitHub host millions of repositories, which receive contributions from millions of developers worldwide. Some project repositories register data from more than a decade of development, enabling the analysis of projects from a historical perspective. In this talk, I will discuss some of the uses and challenges of mining software repositories, focusing on some works conducted in our group, such as: identification of change dependencies, evaluation of architectural degradation from commit meta-data, core-periphery analysis of developers participation, change-proneness prediction, analysis of the impact of refactoring on code quality, and relations between quality attributes of the test and the code being tested.
Kaggle's WISE 2014 challenge
This presentation describes the approach that I developed for Kaggle's WISE 2014 challenge. The challenge was about multi-label classification of printed media articles to topics. The main ingredients of my solution was a plug-in rule approach for F1 maximization, feature selection using a chi squared based criterion, feature normalization and a multi-view ensemble scheme.
DOs and DONT’s of Social Analytics
This document provides guidance on social media analytics. It discusses that there is no single list of universal metrics and that metrics need to make sense for each individual context and business goals. It also emphasizes that activity metrics alone are not sufficient and that metrics need to demonstrate corresponding business results in order to "pass the so what test." Additionally, it stresses that benchmarks and comparisons are needed to properly analyze social media analytics data.

Today, people increasingly try to solve domain-specific problems through interaction on online Question and Answer (Q&A) sites, such as Stack Overflow. The growing success of the Stack Overflow community largely depends on the will of their members to answer others’ questions. Recent research has shown that the factors that push members of online communities encompass both social and technical aspects. Yet, we argue that also the emotional style of a technical question does influence the probability of promptly obtaining a satisfying answer. In this presentation, we describe the design of an empirical study aimed to investigate the role of affective lexicon on the questions posted in Stack Overflow.

Mining Sociotechnical Information From Software Repositories
A large amount of data is produced during collaborative software development. The analysis of such data sets a great opportunity to better understand Software Engineering from the perspective of evidence-based research. Mining software repositories studies have explored both the technical and social aspects of software development contributed to the discovery of important information about how software development evolves and how developers collaborate. Several repositories store data regarding source code production (version control systems), communication between developers and users (forums and mailing lists), and coordination of activities (issue tracker, task managers, etc.). In the open source world, such data is available in large ecosystems of software development. Platforms such as GitHub host millions of repositories, which receive contributions from millions of developers worldwide. Some project repositories register data from more than a decade of development, enabling the analysis of projects from a historical perspective. In this talk, I will discuss some of the uses and challenges of mining software repositories, focusing on some works conducted in our group, such as: identification of change dependencies, evaluation of architectural degradation from commit meta-data, core-periphery analysis of developers participation, change-proneness prediction, analysis of the impact of refactoring on code quality, and relations between quality attributes of the test and the code being tested.
Kaggle's WISE 2014 challenge
This presentation describes the approach that I developed for Kaggle's WISE 2014 challenge. The challenge was about multi-label classification of printed media articles to topics. The main ingredients of my solution was a plug-in rule approach for F1 maximization, feature selection using a chi squared based criterion, feature normalization and a multi-view ensemble scheme.
DOs and DONT’s of Social Analytics
This document provides guidance on social media analytics. It discusses that there is no single list of universal metrics and that metrics need to make sense for each individual context and business goals. It also emphasizes that activity metrics alone are not sufficient and that metrics need to demonstrate corresponding business results in order to "pass the so what test." Additionally, it stresses that benchmarks and comparisons are needed to properly analyze social media analytics data.

Today, people increasingly try to solve domain-specific problems through interaction on online Question and Answer (Q&A) sites, such as Stack Overflow. The growing success of the Stack Overflow community largely depends on the will of their members to answer others’ questions. Recent research has shown that the factors that push members of online communities encompass both social and technical aspects. Yet, we argue that also the emotional style of a technical question does influence the probability of promptly obtaining a satisfying answer. In this presentation, we describe the design of an empirical study aimed to investigate the role of affective lexicon on the questions posted in Stack Overflow.

The (R)evolution of Social Media in Software Engineering
