TECHNICAL RESUME WORKSHOP
Creating Your Technical Resume
What are recruiters looking for in a resume?
How do I display my skills from Centriq?
What if I don’t have any experience?
Common questions…
Common concerns…
 I don’t really know how to do a resume.
 I hate doing resumes!
 I don’t know what to say.
 I don’t like bragging about
myself.
Creating Your Technical Resume
Centriq has worked with area
employers for many years.
We will show you the way!
What Is A Resume?
RESUME: A concise snapshot of the goals, qualifications,
and experiences an individual possesses.
Grab their
attention or
they will
move on!
What Is The Purpose?
Gain enough
interest to
get an
INTERVIEW!
Simple…
Don’t Let Your Resume Get Tossed!
FACTS!
 Recruiters only look at a
resume for an average of 7
seconds!
 The average recruiter sees
5,000 resumes a year.
NOTE! Poor spelling/grammar & unprofessional
email address will get it tossed immediately!
ATS (Applicant Tracking System)
ATS: A computer that screens for keywords to determine
if your resume gets passed on to a decision maker.
 Match keywords!!
 Emphasize your talents and
experiences that mirror
what they need.
 Be concise – less is more!
Get Your Resume Read by
Showcase YOUR
Transferable
Skills!
TRANSFERABLE SKILL: Skills obtained or utilized in previous unrelated employment
that are applicable for success in a position in the newly desired industry.
Power Words!
If you don’t have IT work experience this is all you have to
show you are qualified!
Resume Questions…
Should the Centriq Training info really
take up a third of the page?
TIP - Don’t assume an employer will know
all that you learned during your training!
Recruiters only look at resumes
that are one page?
Concise, relevant information will keep them
reading. It is ok if you have more than one page.
TIP – Put the most
relevant info at the top of
the first page.
I don’t have most of the technical skills that are
listed on my resume yet.
Should I really be putting them on there already??
Resume Questions…
NOTE - Staple if more than one page.
Resume Questions…
Q: What if I end up getting an interview
before I’m done training?
A: If you are asked about something on your
resume that you have not trained on yet let
them know that you will be learning that in
the coming weeks.
NOTE - When you start applying for jobs be sure you
are reviewing your resume contents frequently!

Keywords to get through resume screening.
PROJECT
 This is where you get to show your “real world” experience!
 Hands-on vs just theory based education.
Technical Resume “Must Haves”
TECHNICAL TRAINING
 Details show hiring managers you have hands-on experience.
 Once you get your first job in IT…
 Reduce the detail in this section and
 Move to the bottom (below PROFESSIONAL HISTORY section).
 Eventually it will just look like the following:
Centriq Training, Leawood, KS 2017
Security & Systems Administrator
Order IS Important!
 What is most important to an IT hiring manager?
 What may have been important in a previous job/career may
not be important now. Take time to re-think what you include.
 You are a career changer.
 Career changer resumes have Education/Training moved up.
Traditional resumes have education at the bottom.
