The state emblem of Karnataka features a red shield with a white two-headed bird called Ganda Berunda surrounded by a blue border. Above the shield are four back-to-back lions on a blue circular base depicting sculptures from the Ashoka pillar. Flanking the shield are mythical lion-elephant creatures called Sharabha standing on a green base. Below is the national motto of India "Satyameva Jayate" meaning "Truth alone triumphs" in Sanskrit. This emblem draws from the royal emblem of Mysore and is used in official government communications of Karnataka.
