9. * Speaking
* Different tasks

* Comment and give a personal reaction to them
* Strategies:
* DO read carefully the task.
* DON’T give separate description of each photo, or describe them in detail.
* DO keep talking for the required time.
* If you compare and contrast the pictures, focus on similarities and
differences between them. Do not spend too much time on one picture.
* Remember to include in your description all the information required by the
task.
* At the end of your talk, your partner will ask you three questions about the
things you haven’t spoken about.

Task 3.
Collaborative task.
You work together to reach a decision or
conclusion.
*
*
*
*
Tips:
*
DON’T make a decision too soon, or you will
run out of things to say.
*
DO make use of strategies to ensure you and
your partner share equally in the discussion.
*
*
*
*
*
*
*
Discuss all the options.
DON’T just answer the questions.
DO take the opportunity to initiate discussion
and express your opinions.
*
*
*
Starting a discussion:
Shall I start?
Would you like to start?
OK, let’s talk/shall we talk about this one?
Well, I think (working in groups) is very
(effective), because (you can learn from
other people).
Expressing and justifying opinions:
Well, (using a computer) can be
(dull), because (you can’t really
communicate with a computer).
*
DO listen to your partner and try to develop
his/her ideas.
In my opinion, (practical lessons are very
effective, because you remember the
information more clearly).
*
DO make sure you both take an equal part in
the conversation.
What I mean is (it’s difficult to get help if
you are working on your own).
*
I’m thinking about (people who don’t pay
attention in a big class).
*
Be polite? Find out about your friend’s
opinions and take them into account.
*
*
Come up with ideas, give good reasons.
Come to an agreement.
14. * Involving the other person:
* What do you think?
* What’s your opinion?
* What about you? Do you agree?
* Would you agree with that?
* We haven’t talked about this one.
What do you think of it?
* Do you think …?
* Which (way of studying) do you
think …?
* (This way of studying is
boring), don’t you think?
* Tell me, please, what do you think
about (doing experiments in class).
* You’ve got a different
opinion, haven’t you?
* And what else?
* Suggesting:
* We could (choose…).
* What about (the track)? That
would be a good choice for (young
people).
* How about…? That way, we could
(appeal to lots of different
people).
*
* Coming to a conclusion:
* OK, which (two) are the best?
* So, have we decided which (two)
are the best?
* So, have we agreed, that …?
* So, we’ve decided to (choose …).
15. *Summarising and
reporting a
decision:
*We both agreed
that …
*We decided on …
*So that was the
conclusion we
reached: …
*
* What examiners like …
*
* Examiners like students who:
* Are friendly and sound
interested in what they are
doing.
* Answer questions as fully as
they can.
* Can ask as well as answer
questions.
* Are not afraid to say that they
don’t understand.
*
* Examiners don’t like students
who:
* Look bored and miserable.
* Only answer questions with
“yes” or “no”.
* Don’t listen to other people.
16. *Monologue.
*Tips.
*Read all the tasks and make sure you
understand what you have to talk
about.
*Think of ideas for things to say and
organize them in a logical order. You
can note down a few useful words or
phrases for the task. Do not waste
time writing full sentences.
17. *Use full sentences and try to elaborate
(разрабатывать, развивать) your answers,
make them more interesting. Do not just
answer with one word. Give reasons for
your opinions examples to support your
point of view.
*Avoid using the same words and structures
all the time. Use a wide range of grammar
structures and vocabulary to make your
speech more effective.
*Stick to the point and keep the question in
mind, do not talk about irrelevant things.
think, I believe, in my view, in my
opinion, to my mind, I’m absolutely
sure (I’m not sure that …), it’s
obvious that …etc.
* для соблюдения логики
высказывания: however; first(ly),
second(ly), third(ly); on one hand
… on the other hand; one shouldn’t
forget that …; …but at the same
time; (and) besides; what’s more
(moreover)…; finally
* в случае непонимания вопроса:
Could you repeat the question,
please? Could you say it again,
please?
* в случае, если вы не можете
ответить на вопрос I’m sorry … I’m
afraid I don’t know much about
that
