This document discusses various techniques for improving database concurrency in SQL Server. It begins by explaining some common issues that can lead to concurrency problems like long transactions, missing indexes, and table lock escalation. It then presents several solutions like read committed snapshot isolation (RCSI), partition-level lock escalation, bulk loading, and offloading traffic to improve concurrency without changing applications. Specific case studies are provided showing how these techniques were successfully used by companies to handle high volumes of data modification and querying. The presentation concludes by previewing new high availability features in the upcoming SQL Server "Denali" version.

Social realism in film originated from Italian Neorealism after World War 2, which depicted the difficult lives of the working class. It was influenced by British documentaries of the 1930s and focused on location shooting in run-down urban areas. Key characteristics include using non-professional actors, close-ups to elicit sympathy, and exploring social issues like poverty, unemployment and injustice through working-class protagonists in dysfunctional family settings. Cathy Come Home, a 1966 BBC documentary-style series about a couple made homeless, had a huge impact and sparked political discussion.

Computers are advancing rapidly and changing how education is delivered in unprecedented ways. A survey found that only 18% of teachers use technology with students for over 45 minutes per week, while 14% don't use it at all. Most use it for around 15 minutes. Technology is expensive to purchase and upgrade over time as it advances. Students are expected to be technologically literate by 8th grade. Studies have found that student skills, knowledge, organization, interest and attitudes improve after using technology for projects in subjects like English and social studies. One district also saw improved reading scores.
