The farmer sowed seeds on four different types of ground: the path, rocky ground, thorny ground, and good soil. Some seeds fell on the path and were eaten by birds. Other seeds fell on rocky ground and sprouted quickly but died because their roots could not grow deep. Still other seeds fell among thorn bushes and were choked out before producing grain. However, the seeds that fell on good soil grew and produced a large harvest. Jesus used this parable to teach his disciples that hearing God's word is like the different types of ground - it may be taken away, believe temporarily, be choked out by worries, or take root and bear fruit.
