Sony announced plans to lay off 1,000 employees from its mobile phone division in Lund, Sweden by the end of 2014. The layoffs represent approximately 15% of the workforce in Lund and are part of Sony's goal to restructure its struggling smartphone business and return it to profitability. Currently, Sony holds about 12% of the global smartphone market, trailing Samsung which has 41%.
