2. About the VISIT
On Friday, 18/1/2019, some members of the Erasmus
team visited the Technical University of Crete, where
we participated in an investigation about the
pollution of the local sea water. There, we had the
chance to analyze the waters, and find out what micro
bacteria lurk inside...
To be more specific, we were looking for two kinds of
bacteria, Ecoli and Enterococcus.
4. The process:
First of all, we used sterilized small circular boxes,
filled with nutritional “juices” for the small bacteria.
This will allow them to grow faster than normal and
allow us to have our test results quicker.
Meanwhile, we filtered the water through a special
machine. In this way, we made sure that nothing
would interfere with our results.
6. The process:
Later, we inputted the filter inside the specific
circular box and sealed it.
We took 4 tests, 2 for each bacteria, to make sure the
results will be identical.
After that, we put the boxes with bacteria into an
oven for a day, in about 35 to 37 degrees Celsius, in
order for the bacteria to grow up rapidly.
8. The results:
After a long day, the Erasmus team got the results.
We found out that only 2 or 3 colonies made by
bacteria per box, which means that our sea water is
relatively safe.
Notification: according to EU standards, sea water is
labeled as “polluted” if it contains at least 8O or more
colonies of bacteria per 100 ml.
