It is a great privilege as the Chairman of the organising
committee, to do so, and to wish you a memorable stay in our
green and pleasant land.
The IFEAT conference will be held from 27th September to 1st
October. The venue will be the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, situated
in the heart of the City of Colombo the commercial capital of the
country, with a harbour that is famous for its ancient history. A
number of sites worth visiting are in close proximity to the
Cinnamon Grand Hotel itself, our official hospitality partner.
These can be approached by brief taxi rides, and include
interesting places such as The Museum, The Art Gallery, the
Beira Lake, the Dutch Hospital site (now a veritable mall), the
Water’s Edge, the Parliament and its colourful surrounds, the
Arcade, the Nelum Pokuna, and the plethora of restaurants that
Colombo is nowadays renowned for.
The Theme of the IFEAT 2015 Conference is:
Asia - source of essential
oils and medicinal plants.
Delegates will be able to participate in a number of seminars
featuring technical and commercial interests, in which experts in
these areas will make the leading contributions. There will also
be field visits to the cinnamon growing region on the southern
coast, where delegates will be able to see our spectacular
beaches, unique traditional fishing techniques, and witness the
distillation of the essential oils of cinnamon.
Sri Lanka has much to offer as a tourist attraction for those of you
who can afford the time for an extended stay. There is the
“Cultural Triangle” approachable via a modern roadway, north
I look forward to welcoming you to Colombo, Sri Lanka, in September, 2015 to attend
IFEAT – 2015.
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
AYUBOWAN!

west of Colombo, which includes the ancient city of
Anuradhapura – 400 BC, the medieval city of Polonnaruwa 1100
AD, the unique Rock Fortress of Sigiriya – all UNESCO World
Heritage Sites. Sigiriya is a spectacular feature, a 200m tall natural
rock of stunning beauty, at one time a Royal Palace of a King.
Here you can view the historic frescoes and, from the top of the
rock, the ruins of a King’s palace, and look down on the lush
canopy of a rain forest. There are wildlife National Parks, like the
Yala National Park with herds of wild elephants, peacocks and
leopards. In close proximity lies the Bundala bird sanctuary which,
like the Horton Plain, is a bird-lovers’ paradise.
The hill country is the region with the reputation for the world’s
top brands of tea. You can sample the flavours of several varieties
here, and purchase gift packs for the folks at home. The tea
country forms a vast undulating carpet of emerald green, a
soothingly restful scene, set in a climate evocative of an English
autumn day. In the middle of the country lies the historic Royal
City of Kandy which boasts a world famous Buddhist Temple, and
the splendour of the Victoria Dam. Moving down from the region of
the hills you may encounter some cascading natural waterfalls,
from Laxapana to Ramboda Falls, that embellish our island scenery.
Delegates and persons accompanying them, will be able to
appreciate that Sri Lanka is indeed an island like no other, with more
wonders within a small area, compared to much larger land masses.
Our little island has seduced tens of thousands of explorers from
the times of yore, from China, India, Arabia and Europe, who
came in quest of the island’s famed gems and spices. The final
colonial period, which commenced in 1505 with the Portuguese,
followed by the Dutch, and finally the British, ended in 1948.
One of our prominent historians has observed: “If the vagaries of
wind and wave brought the Portuguese to our shores, the lure of
cinnamon caused them to stay”. Indeed the lure of our spices,
and the quality of the island’s tea were the major economic
products of pre-independent Sri Lanka. The cultural tapestry of
our island reflects many aspects of our colonial history, along with
traditional customs and cuisine, and you will be able to savour a
sample of this bewildering array during your stay.
So, I feel certain that you will attend the IFEAT – 2015 Conference
in Colombo, Sri Lanka in September, and take back with you
reminiscences of a fruitful professional experience, as well as
memories of an encounter with our cultural ethos and scenic
beauty.
Thank you.

1. Product safety
Two projects are currently underway, as described below.
RIFM – Safety Evaluation of Natural Complex
Substances (NCSs)
The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), an independent organisation
whose function is the evaluation of fragrance materials, has been working on the
assessment of NCSs per se. Insufficient evaluations of our products as single
substances have been performed in lieu of their individual components. With this
fresh look at the NCSs we expect that a new perspective of their safety will be
affirmed. An initial group of five essential oils, jointly chosen by IFEAT and RIFM is
nearly finished. These results will be made available to the IFEAT membership in the
coming months. The objective of this project is to build a recognised database on
the safety of NCSs, that is accessible to our members. The Executive Committee
believes this information will be invaluable in promoting the safe use of our
products to our governments and to the public in general.
NCSs as Flavouring Ingredients
The FEMA GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) list is the global standard for flavour
materials. In cooperation with the Flavor Extracts Manufacturers Association (FEMA)
and the International Organization of the Flavor Industry (IOFI) a systematic updated
re-evaluation of the NCS products on this list is now beginning. IFEAT will fund a
portion of this five year project taking a leading role in this project's implementation.
The evaluation of the NCSs will be performed by the Expert Panel of FEMA. The aim
of this affirmation of the safety of the NCSs is to provide the flavour and fragrance
industries with a comprehensive framework with which to argue for the safe use of
our products.
Although FEMA is a US based organisation it speaks in tandem with industries in
Europe, Japan and the global arena.
IFEAT members are well aware of some of our activities, notably the Annual
Conference and the Study Tours to producing regions around the world. They may
not be aware however of other activities in which IFEAT is investing finances and
time on behalf of the global trade in essential oils and aroma chemicals. There are
three main areas in which IFEAT has chosen to invest funds for 2015 …………….and
beyond:
1. Product safety
2. Socio-economic studies
3. Educational support
Support to the Industry
PAGE 6 IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015
2. Socio-economic reports on specific naturals
The IFEAT Socio-Economic Sub-Committee has commissioned 12 reports on the
socio-economic impact of the production of specific naturals in certain parts of the
world. This is an important project as it is designed to give an estimate of the
numbers of people, families and communities involved in local production,
processing and trade in these products. As legislation becomes ever tighter in
importing regions, at the same time as social and economic issues in developing
countries are taken increasingly into account, this work is expected to be useful for
IFEAT in future legislative/regulatory discussions. The reports are being published in
the IFEAT newsletter, IFEATWORLD. So far, reports have covered the production of
patchouli in Indonesia, cornmint in India, citronella (java type) in China and
Indonesia and jasmine in Egypt and India.
3. Educational support
Sponsored education courses
A long-running commitment by IFEAT has been to support the industry through the
provision of educational programmes on the many aspects of the essential oils and
aroma trades. IFEAT sponsors two educational courses run separately through the
UK universities of Reading and Plymouth. The Flavourist Course is run by the
University of Reading and the distance learning programme, in which participants
study for the IFEAT Diploma (Fragrance or Flavour), is run by the International
Centre for Aroma Trades Studies (ICATS) based at the University of Plymouth. Both
are very popular; the 2014 Flavourist course was fully subscribed and registrations
on the ICATS course continue to increase. Following the successful completion of
the programmes, students are awarded the IFEAT Flavourist or Perfumery Diplomas
ISEO Sponsorship
Following on from its contribution last year, the IFEAT Executive Committee has
agreed to give financial support for the participation of 20 students in the 46th
International Symposium on Essential Oils (ISEO) to be held in Lublin, Poland on 13-
16 September 2015. This annual scientific meeting of researchers and industrialists is
a globally recognised forum for information on new technologies. The IFEAT grant
enables some of the top students from around the world to attend. ISEO has
acknowledged the benefits of IFEAT funding, and the working cooperation between
the two organisations will continue to benefit the industry.
Members will be kept informed of progress on these important projects.
IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015 PAGE 7
A country with a long history of 2,500 years, has undergone
many experiences which has added to its rich culture. Sri
Lanka has been enriched by the culture and heritage of
many of the nations that have colonised the country during
its history. Today what Sri Lanka depicts is the influence of its
ancestors from Dutch, Portuguese, British Origin.
The capital of the country is Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte.
Colombo the commercial capital, evolving into a scenic green
city, has so much to offer a traveller. The world recognises us
for our tea and gems. Our economy is supported by the
major exports of rubber, coconut and garments.
Recovering from a 30 year old civil conflict, it is now poised to
embark on a journey of greatness. The country is geographically
placed to exploit the many blessings nature has offered. A
beautiful island surrounded by the Indian Ocean is adorned
by exotic beaches. Within a few hours drive, the traveller is
exposed to scenic beauty of the hill country, with the world
renowned tea estates, producing the Ceylon Tea. Exploration
of the north central area would offer a glimpse of the rich
and ancient cultural heritage. Sigiriya the magnificent
fortress of the ancient King Kassyapa is today considered a
UNESCO World Heritage Site. A traveller is exposed to
many such creations that have marvelled the world.
The country boasts of several sanctuaries which are
providing the wildlife a natural habitat. The leopards,
elephants, tigers and many other species of wildlife that
are treasured offer the traveller a great experience. Nature
and adventure tours are available depending on the taste
of the traveller.
Sri Lanka is a diverse country, home to many ethnicities,
religions and languages. Predominantly a Buddhist
stronghold, it has learned the importance of ethnic harmony
and is today poised to appreciate the diversity in the cultural
melting pot. The same diversity also enhances the cuisine
on offer, enthralling a visitor and tantalizing the taste buds.
Colombo city, which most of you will no doubt have the
opportunity to experience, will present the preserved
architecture of the past. A visit through the city showcases
the blend between the old world charm and modern day
luxury side by side. A visitor will easily spend the time
discovering the experiences Colombo offers, from shopping
to entertaining day or night. After a full day of exploration
we would highly recommend an ayurvedic spa treatment to
ensure you are fully energized to face the next day.
Popularly known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a uniquely exotic
destination with so much to offer the discerning traveller. Within a relatively limited area
of 65,525 km2
, it has the capacity to enthral a visitor leaving a memorable impression.
Today Sri Lanka is listed as one of the fastest growing tourist destinations that has
claimed the attention of travellers far and wide.

Galle Fort, in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was first built in
1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th
century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural
heritage monument, which even after more than 423 years maintains a polished
appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by by the Archeological
Department of Sri Lanka. The fort has a colourful history, and today has a multi-
ethnic and multi-religious population. The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch
people who still own some of the properties inside the fort are trying to make this
place one of the modern wonders of the world. The heritage value of the fort has
been recognised by UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a UNESCO World
Heritage Site under criteria IV, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble
which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian
traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries.”

Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage: set amongst the verdant hills of Kegalle is a
unique orphanage, where the tiny tots weigh 60 kg or more. This is the world's first
and only elephant orphanage established to feed, nurse and house young
elephants lost or abandoned by their mothers. Other occupants are elephants
displaced from their natural habitat by development projects or those found
wounded. Visitors could see the baby elephants being fed milk from gigantic
feeding bottles or bathed in the river which flows nearby - an unforgettable sight!
Established in 1975, by the Wildlife Department and National Zoological gardens
which subsequently led to a breeding programme through which more than twenty
five elephants have been born since 1984.
Kelaniya- (Kalyani) is mentioned in the Buddhist chronicle, the Mahawamsa which
states that the Gautama Buddha (5th century BC) visited the place, after which the
temple was built. The town is also of historical importance as the capital of a
provincial king Kelani Tissa (1st century BC) whose daughter, Vihara Maha Devi was
the mother of king Dutugemunu the Great, regarded as the most illustrious of the
186 or so kings of Sri Lanka between the 5th century BC and 1815. Sri Lankan
Buddhists believe that the Buddha visited Kelaniya in order to quell a quarrel
between two Nāga leaders of two warring factions. The Kelaniya Raja Maha Vihara
is also famous because of the beautiful paintings and sculpture by Solias Mendis
depicting various events in the history of Sri Lanka. Thousands of Buddhists come

replica of the relic casket is taken in procession accompanied by exotically
costumed dancers, drummers and about 80 to 100 elephants during ten glittering

Colombo to Galle you will enjoy the scenic beauty of Sri Lanka’s
rich agriculture, rural villages, temples etc.
09:00 Arrive at Galle and proceed to witness stilt fishermen
performing the traditional so-called stilt fishing
Stilt fishing is a unique way of fishing and can be seen in the
southern the coastal towns of Galle, Unawatuna, Koggala, and
Weligama. Fishermen who sit on small benches on poles stuck
into the water a few metres offshore and fish for small reef fish
called ‘Bollu’ and ‘Koramburuwo’.
09:30 Leave for Galle Fort
Galle - formerly Point de Galle, a city located in South-Western
Sri Lanka, is the capital of Southern Province. A seaport
bordering a tea-growing region, Galle exports rubber, tea,
rope, coconut oil, and coir (coconut fibre). Galle was an
important commercial port at the beginning of the 16th
century, when much of Sri Lanka was occupied by the
Portuguese and later by the Dutch. Following the improvement
of the port of Colombo by the British during the 19th century,
the prosperity of Galle declined.
Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by Europeans
in South and South East Asia, showing the interaction between
European architectural styles and south Asian traditions. The
Galle fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the largest
remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers. Other
prominent landmarks in Galle include the natural harbour, the
National Maritime Museum, St. Mary's Cathedral founded by
Jesuit priests and one of the main Shiva temples on the island.
Galle is the main city in the most southerly part of the island,
with a population of around 100,000.

10:00 Arrive at Galle Fort
Galle Fort, in the Bay of Galle on the southwest
coast of Sri Lanka, was built first in 1588 by the
Portuguese, and then extensively fortified by the
Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards.
It is a historical, archaeological and architectural
heritage monument, which even after more than
423 years maintains a polished appearance.
The fort has a colourful history, and today has a
multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The
Sri Lankan government and many Dutch people
who still own some of the properties inside the
fort are looking at making this one of the modern
wonders of the world. The heritage value of the
fort has been recognised by UNESCO and the
site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage
UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria IV, for
its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble
which illustrates the interaction of European
architecture and South Asian traditions from the
16th to the 19th centuries.”
11:00 After visiting Galle Fort leave for the Mask and
Bathik factories.
11:15 Arrive at the factory
Sri Lanka is known worldwide for its handicrafts.
Demon masks were originally used in demon
propitiation and curative rituals. They make
colourful and dramatic items and are available in a
wide range. These artefacts are manufactured
using only the tools particular to them and from
raw materials found in abundance in nature and
using techniques passed down through generations.
Colourful dramatic fabrics and designer garments
using a wax resist dyeing technique of Indonesian
origin but distinctly Sri Lankan design. The batik
tradition based on the cultural tradition of Sri Lanka.
There are vivid colourful batik styles in Sri Lanka.

Day 1 Leave Colombo port for Kandy
Kandy: The last capital of the Sri Lankan kings which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The name Kandy conjures visions of splendour and magnificence. Many of the legends,
traditions and folklore are still lovingly kept alive. Drive around Kandy Lake built by the
last Sinhalese king Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe in 1806, visit Kandy town and bazaar, the
arts and crafts centre and a gem museum and lapidary. The evening is the best time to
visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic and witness a traditional cultural dance show afterwards.
Evening- Visit Kandy City and Kandy Temple
Kandy Temple: The focal point of the town is, without doubt, the golden roofed
Dalada Maligawa where the Sacred Tooth Relic of the Buddha is enshrined. Major
restoration work is in progress here by the UNESCO - aided Central Cultural Fund. The
highlight of the year is the Esala Perahera, when a replica of the relic casket is taken in
procession accompanied by exotically costumed dancers, drummers and about 80 to
100 elephants during ten glittering nights in July/August. Visit Kalapuraya in the
beautiful Dumbara valley 8km from Kandy, where descendants of the ancient craftsmen
still create items of rare elegance in metal and wood.
Day 2 Leave for Harbrana
Evening - Leave for Polonnaruwa
The ancient city of Polonnaruwa rose to fame as the capital after the decline of
Anuradhapura. Its period of greatness was from the 10th - 12th centuries AD. The
entire landscape of the region is punctuated by huge man-made reservoirs, veritable
inland seas, the most famous of which is the Prakrama Samudra or the Sea of
Parakrama, larger in size than the Colombo harbour. The monuments of this medieval
city are relatively well preserved and give clear evidence of the glory of Sri Lanka's past.
See the Royal Palace complex, the Quadrangle with its conglomeration of ancient
heritage and the spectacular Gal Vihare complex of four colossal images of the Buddha,
cut from a single slab of granite – a highlight of ancient Sri Lankan rock carving.

Evening - Minneriya Safari (optional)
Minneriya - Located between Habarana and Polonnaruwa, the 8,890 hectares of
Minneriya National park is an ideal eco-tourism location in Sri Lanka. The park
consists of mixed evergreen forest and scrub areas and is home to Sri Lanka 's
favorites such as sambar deer, leopards and elephants. However the central
feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank (built in 3rd century AD by King
Mahasena). During the dry season (June to September), this tank is an incredible
place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze on the grasses as
well as the huge flocks of birds (cormorants and painted storks to name but a
few) that come to fish in the shallow waters.
Please note that entrance tickets and hire of jeep will be paid directly by
the participants.
Day 3 Leave for Sigiriya
Sigiriya – this UNESCO World Heritage Site, a spectacular Rock Fortress, is one
of Sri Lanka’s major attractions. The most impressive facets of the unique
complex are the Water Gardens, the Frescoes of beautiful maidens, the Mirror
Wall with ancient graffiti, the Lion platform and the Summit of 1.6 hectares,
which was completely covered by buildings during the period of Sigiriya’s glory.
Built by King Kashyapa (477-495 A.D), the “Lion Rock” is a citadel of unusual
beauty rising 200m from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost
stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town and the base is ringed by a moat,
rampart, and extensive gardens. The world-renowned frescoes (originally 500, of
which only 19 remain today) which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock
approached by a spiral stairway are painted in earth pigments on plaster. The
old stairway to the top led through the mouth of a crouching lion but today only
the huge paws remain giving an indication of the enormous proportions of the
head. Remains of the handsome royal citadel are on the summit and several
caves for meditation, audience platforms and baths complete the unique site.
Day 4 Leave hotel for Dambulla (city tour)
Dambulla Cave Temples - Dating back to the 1st century BC, this complex of 5
caves was used as a refuge by an ancient king who, on regaining his throne,
commissioned magnificent carved images within the living rock. Later kings
made further improvements and most of the paintings are from the early 19th
century – A UNESCO World Heritage site.

  • 4. It is a great privilege as the Chairman of the organising committee, to do so, and to wish you a memorable stay in our green and pleasant land. The IFEAT conference will be held from 27th September to 1st October. The venue will be the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, situated in the heart of the City of Colombo the commercial capital of the country, with a harbour that is famous for its ancient history. A number of sites worth visiting are in close proximity to the Cinnamon Grand Hotel itself, our official hospitality partner. These can be approached by brief taxi rides, and include interesting places such as The Museum, The Art Gallery, the Beira Lake, the Dutch Hospital site (now a veritable mall), the Water’s Edge, the Parliament and its colourful surrounds, the Arcade, the Nelum Pokuna, and the plethora of restaurants that Colombo is nowadays renowned for. The Theme of the IFEAT 2015 Conference is: Asia - source of essential oils and medicinal plants. Delegates will be able to participate in a number of seminars featuring technical and commercial interests, in which experts in these areas will make the leading contributions. There will also be field visits to the cinnamon growing region on the southern coast, where delegates will be able to see our spectacular beaches, unique traditional fishing techniques, and witness the distillation of the essential oils of cinnamon. Sri Lanka has much to offer as a tourist attraction for those of you who can afford the time for an extended stay. There is the “Cultural Triangle” approachable via a modern roadway, north I look forward to welcoming you to Colombo, Sri Lanka, in September, 2015 to attend IFEAT – 2015. Dear Friends and Colleagues, AYUBOWAN! PAGE 4 IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015
  • 5. west of Colombo, which includes the ancient city of Anuradhapura – 400 BC, the medieval city of Polonnaruwa 1100 AD, the unique Rock Fortress of Sigiriya – all UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Sigiriya is a spectacular feature, a 200m tall natural rock of stunning beauty, at one time a Royal Palace of a King. Here you can view the historic frescoes and, from the top of the rock, the ruins of a King’s palace, and look down on the lush canopy of a rain forest. There are wildlife National Parks, like the Yala National Park with herds of wild elephants, peacocks and leopards. In close proximity lies the Bundala bird sanctuary which, like the Horton Plain, is a bird-lovers’ paradise. The hill country is the region with the reputation for the world’s top brands of tea. You can sample the flavours of several varieties here, and purchase gift packs for the folks at home. The tea country forms a vast undulating carpet of emerald green, a soothingly restful scene, set in a climate evocative of an English autumn day. In the middle of the country lies the historic Royal City of Kandy which boasts a world famous Buddhist Temple, and the splendour of the Victoria Dam. Moving down from the region of the hills you may encounter some cascading natural waterfalls, from Laxapana to Ramboda Falls, that embellish our island scenery. Delegates and persons accompanying them, will be able to appreciate that Sri Lanka is indeed an island like no other, with more wonders within a small area, compared to much larger land masses. Our little island has seduced tens of thousands of explorers from the times of yore, from China, India, Arabia and Europe, who came in quest of the island’s famed gems and spices. The final colonial period, which commenced in 1505 with the Portuguese, followed by the Dutch, and finally the British, ended in 1948. One of our prominent historians has observed: “If the vagaries of wind and wave brought the Portuguese to our shores, the lure of cinnamon caused them to stay”. Indeed the lure of our spices, and the quality of the island’s tea were the major economic products of pre-independent Sri Lanka. The cultural tapestry of our island reflects many aspects of our colonial history, along with traditional customs and cuisine, and you will be able to savour a sample of this bewildering array during your stay. So, I feel certain that you will attend the IFEAT – 2015 Conference in Colombo, Sri Lanka in September, and take back with you reminiscences of a fruitful professional experience, as well as memories of an encounter with our cultural ethos and scenic beauty. Thank you. Devapriya Nugawela IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015 PAGE 5
  • 6. 1. Product safety Two projects are currently underway, as described below. RIFM – Safety Evaluation of Natural Complex Substances (NCSs) The Research Institute for Fragrance Materials (RIFM), an independent organisation whose function is the evaluation of fragrance materials, has been working on the assessment of NCSs per se. Insufficient evaluations of our products as single substances have been performed in lieu of their individual components. With this fresh look at the NCSs we expect that a new perspective of their safety will be affirmed. An initial group of five essential oils, jointly chosen by IFEAT and RIFM is nearly finished. These results will be made available to the IFEAT membership in the coming months. The objective of this project is to build a recognised database on the safety of NCSs, that is accessible to our members. The Executive Committee believes this information will be invaluable in promoting the safe use of our products to our governments and to the public in general. NCSs as Flavouring Ingredients The FEMA GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) list is the global standard for flavour materials. In cooperation with the Flavor Extracts Manufacturers Association (FEMA) and the International Organization of the Flavor Industry (IOFI) a systematic updated re-evaluation of the NCS products on this list is now beginning. IFEAT will fund a portion of this five year project taking a leading role in this project's implementation. The evaluation of the NCSs will be performed by the Expert Panel of FEMA. The aim of this affirmation of the safety of the NCSs is to provide the flavour and fragrance industries with a comprehensive framework with which to argue for the safe use of our products. Although FEMA is a US based organisation it speaks in tandem with industries in Europe, Japan and the global arena. IFEAT members are well aware of some of our activities, notably the Annual Conference and the Study Tours to producing regions around the world. They may not be aware however of other activities in which IFEAT is investing finances and time on behalf of the global trade in essential oils and aroma chemicals. There are three main areas in which IFEAT has chosen to invest funds for 2015 …………….and beyond: 1. Product safety 2. Socio-economic studies 3. Educational support Support to the Industry PAGE 6 IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015
  • 7. 2. Socio-economic reports on specific naturals The IFEAT Socio-Economic Sub-Committee has commissioned 12 reports on the socio-economic impact of the production of specific naturals in certain parts of the world. This is an important project as it is designed to give an estimate of the numbers of people, families and communities involved in local production, processing and trade in these products. As legislation becomes ever tighter in importing regions, at the same time as social and economic issues in developing countries are taken increasingly into account, this work is expected to be useful for IFEAT in future legislative/regulatory discussions. The reports are being published in the IFEAT newsletter, IFEATWORLD. So far, reports have covered the production of patchouli in Indonesia, cornmint in India, citronella (java type) in China and Indonesia and jasmine in Egypt and India. 3. Educational support Sponsored education courses A long-running commitment by IFEAT has been to support the industry through the provision of educational programmes on the many aspects of the essential oils and aroma trades. IFEAT sponsors two educational courses run separately through the UK universities of Reading and Plymouth. The Flavourist Course is run by the University of Reading and the distance learning programme, in which participants study for the IFEAT Diploma (Fragrance or Flavour), is run by the International Centre for Aroma Trades Studies (ICATS) based at the University of Plymouth. Both are very popular; the 2014 Flavourist course was fully subscribed and registrations on the ICATS course continue to increase. Following the successful completion of the programmes, students are awarded the IFEAT Flavourist or Perfumery Diplomas ISEO Sponsorship Following on from its contribution last year, the IFEAT Executive Committee has agreed to give financial support for the participation of 20 students in the 46th International Symposium on Essential Oils (ISEO) to be held in Lublin, Poland on 13- 16 September 2015. This annual scientific meeting of researchers and industrialists is a globally recognised forum for information on new technologies. The IFEAT grant enables some of the top students from around the world to attend. ISEO has acknowledged the benefits of IFEAT funding, and the working cooperation between the two organisations will continue to benefit the industry. Members will be kept informed of progress on these important projects. IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015 PAGE 7
  • 8. A country with a long history of 2,500 years, has undergone many experiences which has added to its rich culture. Sri Lanka has been enriched by the culture and heritage of many of the nations that have colonised the country during its history. Today what Sri Lanka depicts is the influence of its ancestors from Dutch, Portuguese, British Origin. The capital of the country is Sri Jayawardanapura Kotte. Colombo the commercial capital, evolving into a scenic green city, has so much to offer a traveller. The world recognises us for our tea and gems. Our economy is supported by the major exports of rubber, coconut and garments. Recovering from a 30 year old civil conflict, it is now poised to embark on a journey of greatness. The country is geographically placed to exploit the many blessings nature has offered. A beautiful island surrounded by the Indian Ocean is adorned by exotic beaches. Within a few hours drive, the traveller is exposed to scenic beauty of the hill country, with the world renowned tea estates, producing the Ceylon Tea. Exploration of the north central area would offer a glimpse of the rich and ancient cultural heritage. Sigiriya the magnificent fortress of the ancient King Kassyapa is today considered a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A traveller is exposed to many such creations that have marvelled the world. The country boasts of several sanctuaries which are providing the wildlife a natural habitat. The leopards, elephants, tigers and many other species of wildlife that are treasured offer the traveller a great experience. Nature and adventure tours are available depending on the taste of the traveller. Sri Lanka is a diverse country, home to many ethnicities, religions and languages. Predominantly a Buddhist stronghold, it has learned the importance of ethnic harmony and is today poised to appreciate the diversity in the cultural melting pot. The same diversity also enhances the cuisine on offer, enthralling a visitor and tantalizing the taste buds. Colombo city, which most of you will no doubt have the opportunity to experience, will present the preserved architecture of the past. A visit through the city showcases the blend between the old world charm and modern day luxury side by side. A visitor will easily spend the time discovering the experiences Colombo offers, from shopping to entertaining day or night. After a full day of exploration we would highly recommend an ayurvedic spa treatment to ensure you are fully energized to face the next day. Popularly known as the Pearl of the Indian Ocean, Sri Lanka is a uniquely exotic destination with so much to offer the discerning traveller. Within a relatively limited area of 65,525 km2 , it has the capacity to enthral a visitor leaving a memorable impression. Today Sri Lanka is listed as one of the fastest growing tourist destinations that has claimed the attention of travellers far and wide. PAGE 8 IFEAT SRI LANKA - 27 SEPTEMBER - 1 OCTOBER 2015

Evening - Minneriya Safari (optional) Minneriya - Located between Habarana and Polonnaruwa, the 8,890 hectares of Minneriya National park is an ideal eco-tourism location in Sri Lanka. The park consists of mixed evergreen forest and scrub areas and is home to Sri Lanka 's favorites such as sambar deer, leopards and elephants. However the central feature of the park is the ancient Minneriya Tank (built in 3rd century AD by King Mahasena). During the dry season (June to September), this tank is an incredible place to observe the elephants who come to bathe and graze on the grasses as well as the huge flocks of birds (cormorants and painted storks to name but a few) that come to fish in the shallow waters. Please note that entrance tickets and hire of jeep will be paid directly by the participants. Day 3 Leave for Sigiriya Sigiriya – this UNESCO World Heritage Site, a spectacular Rock Fortress, is one of Sri Lanka’s major attractions. The most impressive facets of the unique complex are the Water Gardens, the Frescoes of beautiful maidens, the Mirror Wall with ancient graffiti, the Lion platform and the Summit of 1.6 hectares, which was completely covered by buildings during the period of Sigiriya’s glory. Built by King Kashyapa (477-495 A.D), the “Lion Rock” is a citadel of unusual beauty rising 200m from the scrub jungle. The rock was the innermost stronghold of the 70 hectare fortified town and the base is ringed by a moat, rampart, and extensive gardens. The world-renowned frescoes (originally 500, of which only 19 remain today) which are in a sheltered pocket of the rock approached by a spiral stairway are painted in earth pigments on plaster. The old stairway to the top led through the mouth of a crouching lion but today only the huge paws remain giving an indication of the enormous proportions of the head. Remains of the handsome royal citadel are on the summit and several caves for meditation, audience platforms and baths complete the unique site. Day 4 Leave hotel for Dambulla (city tour) Dambulla Cave Temples - Dating back to the 1st century BC, this complex of 5 caves was used as a refuge by an ancient king who, on regaining his throne, commissioned magnificent carved images within the living rock. Later kings made further improvements and most of the paintings are from the early 19th century – A UNESCO World Heritage site.
