Hello Friends,
This is Matt Burns, FOSAS Director, and I had an intriguing memory
pop into my head the other day. I remember watching the Match
Game in the afternoon during the 1970’s. It was appointment
television for creative word play, with two tiers of panelists trading
information, ideas and a little zaniness. It is often just as zany,
creative, and inviting in the upstairs FOSAS office!
As FOSAS Director, it can be very humorous to be in the upper
floor of an historic building, as I hear the sounds of creative minds
at work together, sharing stories and ideas with each other. I
am appreciative I get to share the view and the adventure with
Donna DeTurris, the Sharon Art Studio Director for SFRPD, and
Cassandra Sechler, the FOSAS Administrative Assistant.
In the spirit of the Match Game, I asked Cassandra and Donna to
think of a word to complete this sentence. “Sharon Art Studio is
so alive, when we unlock the door in the morning; the first sound we
hear is…?” To this Cassandra blurted out “Ghosts making coffee!”
And Donna replied, “Footsteps of the past!” We all shared a good
laugh.
These “footsteps” really do seem to be present each day. They
echo throughout the building, and I wonder what was created last
night. What artist was inspired within these walls? What student
went home with a new technique or satisfaction with what he or she
accomplished? As our journey continues, we look forward to many
inspiring pieces, stories, and lessons taught within these walls.
We hope this brochure and the many offerings at Sharon Art Studio
inspire and awaken the artist in you. A pot of coffee goes on, and
our day begins. And so does Spring 2015!

Sharon Art Studio & the Friends of Sharon Art Studio
A Public-Private Partnership
Sharon Art Studio is run under the auspices of the San Francisco Recreation and Park
Department, and is San Francisco’s largest public community art center. The Studio has
affordable courses in ceramics, leaded and fused glass, jewelry, drawing, painting,
and mixed-media for all ages, and for all levels of experience. The Studio is open
year-round and offers one day workshops and courses that meet once weekly and last
between four and ten weeks.
Housed in the landmark Sharon Building in Golden Gate Park between the Children’s
Playground and Carousel, the Studio remains a vibrant hub of Arts & Craft offerings
- thanks to an innovative partnership between the San Francisco Recreation & Park
Department and the Friends of Sharon Art Studio (FOSAS). Since 1991 the Friends
have expanded the Studio’s programming and currently operates 50% of the total
studio’s program. FOSAS offers Jewelry and Metal Arts, Drawing and Painting, Mixed-
Media and Fiber Arts, and special one day workshops in a variety of disciplines. See

mold. Try a different way to get your

In this two part class, you will learn the
basics of both stained and fused glass
techniques. Learn proper glass cutting,
shaping and soldering techniques to
create an original 8x11 stained glass
window for your home. We will also
introduce you to glass fusing: the
technique of heating pieces of compatible
glass in a kiln until they are completely
fused. We will focus on arranging glass
for flat fusing and learn to make a fused
glass project, such as jewelry, a frame or
magnet. A $20 materials fee is included
in the cost of the class. No previous glass
cutting experience is necessary - we will
teach you everything you need to know!
New students must attend the first class.
Must be able to follow directions and safety
precautions for cutting and handling glass.

Seasonal skill
Some of the top questions my students ask me are
“How did you come up with that?” & “How did you
think of this?”
The answer is usually long and drawn out and also
changes with each piece. Inspiration can come from
a multitude of different sources- conversations with
friends (“your mom should paint skulls!”), movies,
books, magazines, art exhibits, nature, the list goes
on. The point is to capture the moment of “flash of
brilliance” and work on it.
Wherever your inspiration comes from, do not give
up. Even if the design, in whatever you do, does not
work, that in itself can be an inspiration. (Even if at
the time you just want a cup of hot cocoa.)

Knitted Nests for Orphaned Birds

The Basics and Beyond-Spring is just the
right time to get motivated and start
drawing. For the first half of this mini-
course, the basic strategies of line contour,
shading, and perspective are covered. The
second half introduces how to creatively
use watercolor washes and pen lines.
For the first class, bring an 18”x24”
newsprint pad, 4B and 6B graphite pencils,
a 6B charcoal pencil, and a kneaded
eraser.

Come experience drawing from a live
model. Class is self-directed, each
week focusing on a different part of the
anatomy. Critiques of student work made
upon request to the instructor. Emphasis is
on gesture poses, short poses, ending with
20 minute poses. Please bring paper and
drawing materials to class. A one time
$68 fee will be collected to pay for the
live model. Special note: You may drop-in
this class if space allows.
Drop- in fee is $15. Enrolled students
receive priority seating.
The Long Pose

This class will give figure-drawing
enthusiasts an opportunity to draw from
a live model in extended poses of 40
minutes to 120 minutes in length. We
will draw mostly from nude poses and
have some with costumes. In each session
the instructor will also present a variety
of creative and challenging optional
strategies, such as the use of wet media,
chalk on toned paper, collage of grey-
scale papers, and drawing with only
line or value. Model fee included in the
course fee.
Drawing Toolbox: Creative Figure

Creative Figure Drawing is a practice
used in the fields of illustration, animation
and film. Creative Figure Drawing is
using the live model only as a structural
basis to build and design upon with your
imagination. Create character designs,
costumes designs, wardrobe designs and
more. In this course you will learn methods
of designing from your imagination
and how to use reference material to
embellish your drawings. There will be
1-20 min poses. The models will pose
nude and with costume and props. Model

watercolor techniques, a wonderful
vibrant transparent medium. We will
review all materials. Learn how to lay
flat and gradated colors, working with
dry and wet into wet techniques and
color mixing. Experience the luminous,
glowing results of watercolor. Enhance
your observational power viewing and
working from the still life setups from
nature. Each week will be a different
natural subject to paint. The instructor
gives individual attention and encourages

Flowers in Colored Pencil &
Watercolor

Create masses of beautiful blooms and
eloquent renderings of single flowers.
Working in watercolor and colored
pencil you’ll develop the skills to use
these two mediums with confidence. You
will also learn how to convey light and
shadow, develop compositions and the
basics of color theory. The instructor
will give personal instruction and tips
for developing your own unique style.
We will create drawings of flowers that
range from large, intimate views of
single blossoms to sumptuous bouquets of
a variety of blooms. Photos and living
flowers will be used.
Pet Portraits in Colored Pencil

Learn how to create a portrait of your
favorite pet! Working from your favorite
photos you’ll develop skills in creating
accurate proportions, color development
and techniques for using both graphite
and colored pencil. You’ll also learn tips
for creating an exciting composition that
captures the personality of your beloved
friend. The instructor will work with you to
help develop your own style of drawing
that will bring a unique personal touch to
your portrait.
Sketching Sharon Arts Studio

historic Golden Gate Park landmark.
Learning the history of the Sharon Arts
Studio building will enhance your imagery

Expressive Brushstrokes focuses on
capturing the “essence” of nature’s
elements. Your paintings will take on a
fresh liveliness by learning a repertoire
of spontaneous effective marks. Each
brushstroke becomes three dimensional
expressing the rhythmic vitality present in
all life forms. You will learn how “Heart
and Hand must be in accord” for this
magical dance with the brush. We will
work with natural forms of flora, leaves,
foliage, trees, rocks; all the elements
in the landscape. Both traditional wet
and dry watercolor techniques will
be addressed in this class. Individual
attention and direction is emphasized for
personal expression.
Drawing and Painting in Pastels

Explore the unique expression of drawing
and painting with soft luxurious pastels.
The immediacy of mixing rich and
colorful textures right onto the paper
surface is very satisfying, without waiting
for drying time. Different techniques for
blending and overlaying color will be
demonstrated. Experience a quick lively
sketching style for drawings and also
the process for creating well developed
paintings. How to use and mix colors
will be included along with basic pastel
fundamentals. The focus is the natural
world, still life and photographic images
of nature. The instructor works with each
individual for their expression and use of
pastel. No experience is necessary. No

Watercolor Citycapes

Pen & Ink Watercolor

This class will combine pen & ink to
the watercolor media. We will learn
and practice different techniques for
a successful process and result. Basic
watercolor techniques will be reviewed
as well as techniques for the ink pen
and ways to hold the pen. You will learn
to create texture as well as variation of
line with the pen. Be prepared to explore
these exciting new techniques to capture
the living essence of nature. We’ll begin
with a variety of Nature’s still life set ups
and then work from your own photographs
and pictures for each technique.

transfer, 3D assemblages, antiquing
patina and aging mediums. Students will
learn how to combine collections of images

These courses offer the student at any level an opportunity to learn
and explore a variety of ceramic techniques including handbuilding
and throwing on the potter’s wheel. Students can work with and
explore different clays, including stoneware and porcelain. Our
selection of glazes is unsurpassed. We fire cone 10 reduction and
raku. Clay and tools are available for purchase at the studio.
No clay from outside is allowed.
Students may enroll in only one ceramics class per session.

The Sharon Art Studio annually serves over 3000 students with over 100 classes and
workshops each session for both youth & adults, and for skill levels beginning through
advanced.
You can explore ceramics, glass, drawing & painting, mixed-media & fiber arts, and
jewelry & metal arts in a one-day workshop or spread out over a 5-10 week class.
Our dedicated instructors are all professional artists and art educators, that engage
students with their passion for their craft, and inspire excellence through their

son at the McLaren Lodge Annex, located off the Fell Street entrance near
Stanyan Street in Golden Gate Park (physical address: 501 Stanyan St.), or
by calling the registration desk at: 415 831-6800, Mon-Fri, 9am to 5pm. For
registration dates and times refer to our website at sharonartstudio.org or the
front side of this brochure. Registration is ongoing after the opening dates.
NOTE: Assistance is not available at McLaren Lodge on priority registration
days. There is no mail-in registration.
Family Account: To register you must first create a Family Account through
SFRPD (the term “Family Account” applies whether you are registering a family
or only one individual). You must include your email address for access to online
registration, class confirmation, schedule changes, and updates. If you misplace
your login ID and PIN, you can request it online at www.sfreconline.org. Please
call 415-831-6800 during business hours for further assistance.
Enrolling in Programs: Use the course numbers listed (ex. 37699) in this catalog
to identify a particular course, or view all available courses online at www.
sfreconline.org.
Paying for Programs: To pay for courses online students must use a Mastercard
or Visa. To pay by cash or check register in person at the McLaren Lodge Annex.
FOSAS Membership: FOSAS membership is not required to take classes.
Membership benefits include access to priority registration (see below), and
a $10 fee reduction on all adult courses. Membership benefits are applied
only to courses offered at the Sharon Art Studio and cannot be used at other
SFRPD sites. Memberships are available only at the Sharon Art Studio or by
mailing a membership form to: FOSAS Memberships, 1032 Irving St. #520,
San Francisco, CA 94122. FOSAS memberships must be renewed annually and
are non-refundable.

Priority Registration: FOSAS members are given access to early registration
for all Sharon Art Studio courses. All courses are filled on a first-come-first-
served basis, and priority registration does not guarantee placement. To ensure
access to online priority registration students must submit a FOSAS membership
form and fee no later than five days before the first day of priority registration.
Wait List: If you are on the waitlist for a class, you will be notified when a spot
in the class opens. All waitlist management is handled through the registration
desk at 415 831-6800.
Registration Procedure

REFUND POLICY
Withdrawal & Transfer policy:
K All class fees are refundable only if a request is received up to one week (five
business days) prior to the first class meeting.
K A processing fee of $10 or 20% of the course fee (whichever is greater) is withheld
from all class fee refunds.
K All withdrawal requests must be made through the McLaren Lodge Annex office,
501 Stanyan St. in Golden Gate Park, 415-831-6800.
K Withdrawal requests received less than one week prior to the beginning of the
course will result in forfeit of the entire course fee. (NO EXCEPTIONS)
CANCELLATIONS
Classes and workshops cancelled for any reason by the Studio are fully refundable.
We will notify students of any class cancellations. If a class is cancelled the class
fee will be credited to the student’s SFRPD Family Account. For refunds contact the
registration desk at 415-831-6800 M-F, 9am-5pm.
STUDIO POLICIES
KK The Sharon Art Studio (SAS) is an art recreation facility. Studio space is not provided
for commercial purposes. Student work is permitted to be sold ONLY
through Sharon Art Studio sponsored events on or off site. Work may be shown
professionally off site with prior approval by studio staff, provided that the SAS
program is also credited.
KK Students pay for all lessons, regardless of attendance.
KK Make-ups are not provided to compensate for legal holidays.
KK New students must attend the first class of the session. Failure to attend the first
class without prior permission results in forfeiture of class space and fees.
KK Class fees cannot be transferred to another session unless a class is cancelled.
KK Adult classes are for adults 18 and older unless otherwise noted.
KK Dogs are not allowed in the studio. Service/Assistance dogs are exceptions.

The Sharon Art Studio operates under the auspices of the San Francisco Recreation & Park

Founded as a nonprofit in 1991, the Friends of Sharon Art Studio (F0SAS), was established
to preserve and enhance the art program at Sharon Art Studio. The Friends suppliment the
SF Recreation and Parks Department (SFRPD) budget to ensure the studio’s programs are
well equipped, are high quality and safe for all participants.
FOSAS believes that art education is an essential component to a healthy community and
strives to ensure that quality, non-competitive art programs are affordable and accessible

Senior and Good Friend levels are individual memberships.
Family levels and above can apply to one or more individuals in the same household.
