A MESSAGE FROM THE FOSAS DIRECTOR
If you are a long-standing member of the non-profit partner to Sharon Art
Studio, FOSAS, you have met Lenny through the on-going efforts to champion
authenticity in how the studio is administered. Lenny embodied that principle
of realism in all his roles. If you are an artist looking to the studio classes to
help resolve life contradictions through the beauty of creation, you are about
to become a part of his legacy and our family.
I had the pleasure of seeing Lenny on Friday afternoons. New to my position,
I would often be wrapping-up a project whilst Lenny was ramping-up to begin
his traditional evening class. I have rarely seen such a man in action. He
was the first to offer assistance when a community event needed something
special, donating talent time and again to the programs that make us unique.
He was the last to show fatigue, making each day a masterpiece. I have
heard many stories of his character, which always reveal a dedication to the
world. His work reflects this care.
His colleagues have admiration in his mentoring. As one assistant shares,
“Lenny did something truly amazing in his teaching. He actually taught and
challenged me and gave me responsibilities. Most of all, he taught me what
he knew. That is a gift that will always be appreciated. I can now proudly say
that I have a great amount of his skills that I can carry with me and I know
he will always, be with me. Every time I load or fire a kiln. Every time I eat a
potato chip. Every time I eat a Toblerone.”
This semester is dedicated to Lenny. Whether you are entering our doors
for the first time or creating at the studio with vast experience, may his
legacy inspire and inform your learning. The loss is our shared connection to
continue. His touch is everywhere.

FOSAS Executive Director
Loss, Legacy, and Learning
Lenny Price is a classic example of the
Renaissance Man. He is a father, husband,
friend, artist, mentor, teacher and creative
citizen; further promoting the art of process
and discovery in the community he touched
for over 30 years. Through care, tenacity and
skill, he helped mold the clay and character of
Sharon Art Studio for many seasons. It would
be impossible to summarize what he has meant
to so many for so long. Sharon Art Studio is a
family community and we are saddened at his
passing on June 14, 2015.
If you are new to the studio, I guarantee you
will meet Lenny’s example– through the care
and professionalism of the many instructors and
assistants he helped mentor.

INSTRUCTOR INSPIRATION
SERIAL ARTIST
by Susan Gold
Working in a series fosters artistic growth. A series can
have as its focus a variety of elements depending on the
media or artist’s challenge. In ceramics the series could
explore how different glazes enhance a particular form; it
could involve applying a uniform motif or design to several
different forms. It could explore one shape in a variety of
sizes or one technique applied to various forms and glazes.
Often a piece by itself will be less interesting than a
group of pieces expressing one idea or concept. Artists
tend work in a series unconsciously as each completed piece
leads to another idea of how to play with the variables.

FROM OUR HEART TO YOURS: THANK YOU
Cheers to YOU!
Cheers to the fabulous fall season
that is now upon us! The studio has
had an eventful year so far filled with
exciting programming; beautiful art
work; generous donations; an engaged
community; and new friends, FOSAS
members, partnerships, students, and
instructors.
Thank you so much to all of the studio’s
staff, volunteers, members, sponsors,
partners, instructors and students for
your time, energy, and smiles. It is
because of YOU that our community
and programming thrives; we simply
would not be here without you.
- Cassandra Sechler
FOSAS, Administrative Assistant
The Friends of Sharon Art Studio (FOSAS) works in co-operation with the San Francisco
Recreation and Parks Department (SFRPD) to expand and add breadth to the Studio’s
programs. FOSAS augments Studio programs by offering independently funded and staffed
classes and workshops, as well as providing scholarships for low-income youth and adults,
and managing public and community outreach.
All expeditures beyond SFRPD’s Studio budget are made possible with the generous support
of the studio’s Friends. Contributions made to FOSAS go towards employing administrative
staff; purchasing equipment and supplies for all classes; community outreach and free
programs for youth; printing and mailing quarterly class catalog; volunteer appreciation;
and expanding accessibility of the arts to the general public. Donations to FOSAS subsidize
our program costs so that Sharon Art Studio classes remain one of the most affordable arts
and craft classes in the Bay Area. Scholarships are available for all of our classes, and it’s
very easy to apply!
If the Sharon Art Studio has enriched your life, please consider making a gift of your support.
Your donation is a wonderful way to express your gratitude, and ensure our programs
continue to inspire and provide affordable, quality arts education for all.
If you would like to make a donation for the studio’s future equipment needs, or to help us
fulfill our mission to expand accessibility of the arts through affordable classes, consider
becoming a FOSAS member, volunteering your time, donating art supplies, or even spreading
the word about the studio! Read more about FOSAS, the Sharon Art Studio, and ways to help
support the studio on sharonartstudio.org
The Friends of Sharon Art Studio is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization, and your donations are
fully deductible to the extent of the law.

  • 2. 2 A MESSAGE FROM THE FOSAS DIRECTOR If you are a long-standing member of the non-profit partner to Sharon Art Studio, FOSAS, you have met Lenny through the on-going efforts to champion authenticity in how the studio is administered. Lenny embodied that principle of realism in all his roles. If you are an artist looking to the studio classes to help resolve life contradictions through the beauty of creation, you are about to become a part of his legacy and our family. I had the pleasure of seeing Lenny on Friday afternoons. New to my position, I would often be wrapping-up a project whilst Lenny was ramping-up to begin his traditional evening class. I have rarely seen such a man in action. He was the first to offer assistance when a community event needed something special, donating talent time and again to the programs that make us unique. He was the last to show fatigue, making each day a masterpiece. I have heard many stories of his character, which always reveal a dedication to the world. His work reflects this care. His colleagues have admiration in his mentoring. As one assistant shares, “Lenny did something truly amazing in his teaching. He actually taught and challenged me and gave me responsibilities. Most of all, he taught me what he knew. That is a gift that will always be appreciated. I can now proudly say that I have a great amount of his skills that I can carry with me and I know he will always, be with me. Every time I load or fire a kiln. Every time I eat a potato chip. Every time I eat a Toblerone.” This semester is dedicated to Lenny. Whether you are entering our doors for the first time or creating at the studio with vast experience, may his legacy inspire and inform your learning. The loss is our shared connection to continue. His touch is everywhere. Matt Burns FOSAS Executive Director Loss, Legacy, and Learning Lenny Price is a classic example of the Renaissance Man. He is a father, husband, friend, artist, mentor, teacher and creative citizen; further promoting the art of process and discovery in the community he touched for over 30 years. Through care, tenacity and skill, he helped mold the clay and character of Sharon Art Studio for many seasons. It would be impossible to summarize what he has meant to so many for so long. Sharon Art Studio is a family community and we are saddened at his passing on June 14, 2015. If you are new to the studio, I guarantee you will meet Lenny’s example– through the care and professionalism of the many instructors and assistants he helped mentor.

  • 32. 32 INSTRUCTOR INSPIRATION SERIAL ARTIST by Susan Gold Working in a series fosters artistic growth. A series can have as its focus a variety of elements depending on the media or artist’s challenge. In ceramics the series could explore how different glazes enhance a particular form; it could involve applying a uniform motif or design to several different forms. It could explore one shape in a variety of sizes or one technique applied to various forms and glazes. Often a piece by itself will be less interesting than a group of pieces expressing one idea or concept. Artists tend work in a series unconsciously as each completed piece leads to another idea of how to play with the variables.
