This document is a report from Lankenau Hospital to its donors that summarizes the hospital's accomplishments in 2005-2006 and highlights several patient stories. It begins by noting that Lankenau Hospital received several awards for clinical excellence and expanded its physician team during a time when other hospitals are struggling. It then profiles the story of Karen Ochotnicka, a patient from Slovakia who traveled to Lankenau Hospital for treatment of a medical issue misdiagnosed in her home country. Dr. John Marks successfully performed a minimally invasive surgery on her and she made a full recovery, being able to return home to her family in Slovakia. Welcome to the 2005-2006 donor report issue of Lankenau
Leaders. This past year has been a tremendous one for all of
us here at Lankenau Hospital. Please allow us to share with you just
some of the extraordinary moments in a milestone year made possible
by your support.
Lankenau has received the Distinguished Hospital Award for
Clinical Excellence from HealthGrades, the leading healthcare
rating company; been named to Solucient’s “Top 100” Hospitals
ranking; achieved Magnet Status – with Bryn Mawr and Paoli hospitals
(the highest mark of excellence in hospital nursing held by only three percent of U.S.
hospitals); and – as part of Main Line Health – received second place in the Philadelphia
Business Journal’s “2006 Best Places to Work.”
In addition, Lankenau launched an extensive renovation of the Mother/Baby Center
and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; expanded our team of expert physicians at a time
when many hospitals in our region are unable to retain physicians; and set record levels
of charitable giving by Lankenau physicians and employees. It has been quite a year.
This issue of Lankenau Leaders celebrates the Hospital family’s accomplishments
of the past year.We hope that you know how much we value your individual contribution
during this remarkable time. As such, this issue is dedicated to you – the physicians,
staff, volunteers, donors and friends who are directly responsible for the success of
Lankenau Hospital.
Building upon these successes and achieving new goals in the months and years to
come will require all of us to renew our dedication to Lankenau Hospital. As a new era
dawns on Lankenau, we are proud of your past involvement and have great confidence
knowing that you are on our side going forward.

Oh how she missed Alexa’s smile!
Karen’s arms ached from the absence of her
baby girl. She didn’t want to wait any longer.
But wait was all she could do.Today’s the day
that Karen hopes to be cleared to go back
home. Is this the beginning of the end of her
long, painful journey? Will she be back on
a plane to Europe soon? Or will she have to
stay here in America even longer?
After anxiously waiting in the Lankenau
office of Dr. John Marks, Karen’s name is
called. She carefully steps into the exam room
where Dr. Marks greets her.The door closes.
Moments later Karen emerges. She hugs her
father and says,“Not yet.” Maybe next week.
Karen was born December 15, 1963 in the
United States. She was raised in Gibbstown,
NJ, where her father was a plant operator
at a plastics facility and her mother was a
customer service representative. Karen went
on to become a research associate at Penn.
That is where she met her true love, Lubo.The
two became engaged on Thanksgiving 1993.
After marrying the following July, they soon
moved to Lubo’s homeland of Slovakia.
Bratislava, the capital of Slovakia, is the
political, economic and cultural center of the
country. Boasting several museums, univer-
sities and theaters, this city of 450,000 people
is also famous for nightlife.“It is a charming
place because until recently it was undiscov-
ered by tourists,” says Karen.
There, Lubo manages an executive recruit-
ment firm, while Karen is a freelance writer.
The second edition of her book, Nuclear
Medicine Technology, was published in 2005.
In 2000, the couple adopted Alexa when she
was 9 months-old.“It was the most perfect
thing I have ever done in my life,” she says.
But Alexa and Lubo were many miles away.
Now having returned to the U.S., Karen was
staying with her parents in New Jersey.“It
feels strange to be back,” she says.“I love my
parents and they’ve been great during this
ordeal. I just miss my own house, that’s all.”
This was a journey Karen had to make – for
her family, for her future and for herself. In
June 2006, Karen fell quite ill. Stomach pains,
diarrhea and vomiting blood were some of
the symptoms that led Karen to a hospital in
her adopted homeland of Bratislava.
Having spent two weeks in the hospital in
Bratislava, Karen was diagnosed with rectal
cancer. She was terrified.“I didn’t want to
live 40 years with a colostomy bag,” she says.
Wanting a second opinion, she called her
brother, Duane, who lives in the Delaware
Valley and teaches at Simon Gratz High School.
After scouring the internet for experts in
rectal cancer treatment, Duane found a world-
renowned specialist in his own backyard.
Dr. John Marks, a second-generation colo-
rectal surgeon, is an expert and advocate of
minimally invasive surgical techniques for the
treatment of colon and rectal cancer.
He is well-respected in the international sur-
gical community and, along with his father,
Dr. Gerald J. Marks, attracts colorectal spe-
cialists from around the world to the Gerald
J.Marks,MD,Rectal Cancer Lectureship at Lan-
kenau each year.The 2006 attendees came
from Norway, Sweden, Brazil, France and the
United Kingdom. Drs. Gerald and John Marks
are considered international pioneers in
the colorectal surgical community. Patients
from over half the states in America and from
throughout Europe have come to Lankenau
to be cared for by these two physicians.
Dr. Marks comforted Karen upon her first
visit to his office in July 2006.“He was just so
kind and I knew right away that he was going
to take good care of me,” she says.
After a series of tests, Dr. Marks determined
that Karen had been misdiagnosed – she
didn’t have rectal cancer after all.“Karen was
told that she would need a permanent colos-
tomy bag,” says Dr. Marks.“She had a very
unusual condition. It was a congenital malfor-
mation with a lot of inflammation that could
have been confused as cancer by someone
who doesn’t see these kinds of patients every
day. In effect, Karen had a curtain of tissue
blocking her intestines.”
Dr. Marks decided Karen’s best option was
a technique called Transanal Endoscopic
Microsurgery (TEM).TEM is a minimally-
invasive technique that allows a transanal
approach that otherwise would require major
abdominal surgery. Drs. John and Gerald
Marks are the North American representa-
tives in a European-based trial for the treat-
ment of rectal cancer, comparing TEM and
other treatments to major abdominal surgery.
Dr. John Marks also runs a TEM training cen-
ter out of the Lankenau Institute for Medical
Research.“This option meant that Karen not
only would avoid the colostomy,” says Dr.
Marks,“but also avoid the abdominal
operation altogether.”
On August 10, 2006, Dr. Marks performed
the TEM procedure on Karen at Lankenau
Hospital. Karen was resting at her parents’
home within 48 hours.
“It really is amazing how small our world
is getting,” says Dr. Marks.“Here is a person
who is half a world away, but is able to edu-
cate herself – and learn about us – because
of the information that technology makes
available.We were humbled that she would
travel 18 hours to be treated by us and we
are delighted at such a positive outcome.”
August 18 was the day of Karen’s follow-
up visit with Dr. Marks. She was tired of her
conversations with Lubo and Alexa being
mediated by text messaging and e-mail. She
was hoping for the all-clear so she could fly
home. But as she hugged her father, she knew
she would have to wait a little while longer.
A week later, during her second follow-up
visit, Dr. Marks pronounced Karen fully-recov-
ered and told her that she was free to go back
to Bratislava.When asked what she will do
first when she gets home, tears well up in her
eyes as she offers the only answer imagin-
able:“Kiss my daughter and not let go of her.”
Communicating with her husband and
daughter wasn’t easy.The time difference
didn’t help.“Bratislava is six hours ahead
of Philadelphia,” says Karen.“It was very
difficult to match our schedules.” After over
two months of seeing her daughter only on
webcam, Karen was finally going home.
On August 26, 2006, a healthy Karen Ochot-
nicka returned to Bratislava. She has yet to
let go of her daughter.

was a long way from home. She had traveled from Bratislava, Slovakia to Vienna, Austria,
from Vienna to Frankfurt, Germany, and finally from Frankfurt to Philadelphia. Staring out
her father Henry’s car window as they climbed the winding pathway toward Lankenau
Hospital, Karen couldn’t help but think of her 6-year-old daughter.

your own toilet paper. I know Americans often get frustrated by healthcare here, but you don’t know how good you have it
until you are in a hospital in another country. I appreciate Lankenau’s top-notch care even more.”

he physicians, nurses and staff in
Lankenau Hospital’s Mother/Baby
Center and Neonatal Intensive
Care Unit (NICU) care for mothers and their
babies in extraordinary ways. But clinical
excellence and compassionate care are only
two qualities that growing families need at
this special time. State-of-the-art facilities
are also critical.
The existing Mother/Baby Center, last
renovated in 1986, was designed to accom-
modate 1,500 births per year.Today, more
than 2,300 babies are delivered at Lankenau
each year, and 300 fragile babies are admit-
ted to the NICU – more than any other Main
Line Health hospital. Lankenau has always
had outstanding programs in obstetrics,
gynecology, and neonatology, with special
expertise in high-risk deliveries. Many
new mothers choose to deliver at Lankenau
because they themselves were born here
and trust in the skilled and compassion-
ate care of the Hospital’s obstetricians and
gynecologists. More and more, new patients
are seeking the family-centered care that
Lankenau provides, knowing that the Hospi-
tal offers the benefits of both a teaching and
community hospital. In addition, advances
in technology to care for the tiniest babies
require significantly more space in the NICU
so that vital equipment can be kept at the
bedside.
Lankenau’s physicians, staff, supporters,
and friends have rallied together to address
these changing needs of our community.
Life Begins at Lankenau: The Campaign for
the Mother/Baby Center and Neonatal Inten-
sive Care Unit is striving to raise $3.5 million
towards the $20 million renovation of these
facilities. Funds raised will provide more
space and privacy for families, advanced
equipment, and better educational oppor-
tunities for families to learn how to care for
their infants when they return home.
Lankenau is focusing on improving the
overall family experience. Family kitchens,
educational centers with computer resourc-
es, and homelike waiting areas will ensure
that families are comfortable.The Mother/
Baby Center will have a “greeter” on call 24
hours a day to welcome patients and visitors.
Each of the 41 new patient rooms will be pri-
vate, complete with a private bath, comfort-
able furnishings and artwork.Twenty-four
hour visiting will be encouraged to accom-
modate the needs of families.
Life Begins at Lankenau is off to a great start
thanks to the generous support of several
Lankenau friends. As of February 1, 2007,
over $1.5 million of the $3.5 million cam-
paign goal has been raised. But there is still
much to be done!

On October 3, 2006, Lanke-
nau Hospital dedicated the
Quiet Room for the reflec-
tion and benefit of cancer
patients and their families.
The space is located in
Lankenau’s Cancer Center

and other special touches.
This healing environment is
dedicated to the memory of
Ben Clareman, a Lankenau
oncology patient who passed
away in 2005. Mr. Clareman’s
wife, Gloria, is a dedicated
Lankenau volunteer and
their daughter, Dr. Elizabeth
Robinson, is a physician who
practices in Lankenau. Both
were on hand with other
family members for the room

on October 5, 2006. Afternoon festivities in-
cluded lunch and remarks celebrating the
Women’s Board’s extraordinary donation of
$600,000+ in support of Life Begins at Lan-
kenau: The Campaign for the Mother/Baby
Center and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.

generosity and reflected on the importance
of philanthropy at Lankenau. Andrew G.
Gerson, M.D., Main Line Health System
Division Chief of the Section of Maternal-
Fetal Medicine and Co-Chair, Life Begins
at Lankenau Campaign, provided an update
on the Hospital’s renovations of the
Mother/Baby Center and Neonatal Inten-
sive Care Unit.
The Women’s Board of Lankenau Hospital
was formed in 1953 to coordinate the
diverse activities of the Hospital’s individ-
ual auxiliaries. These auxiliaries include
the Ladies Aid Society, Nurses’ Alumni,
John B. Deaver Society and Hamper Shop.
During the past six decades under the
auspices of the Women’s Board, these
auxiliaries have raised over $5 million to
enhance patient care at Lankenau Hospital.
Women’s Board contributions come from
many events, including: the Lankenau Golf
Invitational, the Rocking Chair Marathon,
the Christmas Fair, Tree of Life, and jew-
elry and book sales.

“I wouldn’t stick to one track,” Dr. Pren-
dergast reflects.“I just couldn’t say no to
the different opportunities along the way
which gave me a chance to get a unique
perspective of the academic and indus-
trial cultures.” After receiving his Ph.D.
in molecular biology from Princeton, Dr.
Prendergast went on to complete his post-
doctoral fellowship at NYU Medical Center.
But before coming to LIMR, he worked
as a scientist at Merck, a faculty member
at the Wistar Institute at the University of
Pennsylvania, and as a director at DuPont
Pharmaceuticals.
Consequently, Dr. Prendergast gained a
wide breadth of experience in his chosen
field of cancer research. As president and
CEO of LIMR, Dr. Prendergast is working to
create a unique environment for research-
ers, where basic and clinical research,

graduate medical education, and part-
nered commercial biotechnology research
happen.“We encourage our researchers
to think outside of the box to create new
inventions, but we fold in the marketplace
and other critical factors which are neces-
sary for the meaningful translation of our
most important work to the patient.”
The best advantage to working at a
distinctive place like LIMR, Dr. Prendergast
believes, is the close proximity of scientists
and practicing physicians working side by
side.“At big institutions like NYU and Penn,
these two groups work in different build-
ings and really don’t mix at all. At LIMR,
we mix plenty and so I am always learning
about aspects of medical practice that I
didn’t appreciate.”
In order to continue his own cancer re-
search work, Dr. Prendergast still continues
to work with his research group. Recently,
in collaboration with researcher Dr. Alex
Muller, his laboratory has discovered a new
therapeutic target, an enzyme called In-
doleamine 2,3 Dioxygenase (IDO), as well
as a new strategy to treat cancer with IDO
inhibitors. Phase I clinical trials will begin
soon on this groundbreaking work.
For Dr. Prendergast, LIMR is just the
beginning of a new type of research
center: one that represents the perfect
combination of academia and industry—
a new model for research that will improve
patient care for many years to come.

This winter wonderland was a scene that
played out at the home of Stephen and Emma
Forbes – and it was just the tip of the igloo.
“When we were growing up in the 1960s and
1970s Steve and Emma were so good to us,”
recalls Bob Maney, a longtime family friend.
“There were 30 or 40 of us kids in the neigh-
borhood back then, and Steve and Emma
would treat us all like we were their own.”
Bob remembers being 8 years-old when
his family moved to Moylan, PA and first met
Steve and Emma, who had no children of their
own.“They would do anything for us kids.
They made it a point to know every child’s
birthday.When that day came, they would
take their authentic Chinese rickshaw out
of their barn and don these bamboo hats.
They would hang a sign on the back of the
rickshaw announcing that kid’s birthday and
then Steve would pull the birthday boy or
girl around the block while Emma walked
beside.”
Then there was the bicycle built for two.
“That was a real rite of passage,” says Bob.
“When one of us would turn 13, he would
be allowed to ride on the double bike.
That was such a novelty 40 years ago and
we all loved it.”
In addition to these unique experiences,
Steve and Emma would invite the kids over to
watch stars from the observatory Steve built
in their garage.They hosted Halloween and
Christmas parties each year and they always
had time for the adults in the neighborhood
too. Steve and Emma even paid to have a clay
tennis court installed on the land across from
their house. It was for the free use of anyone
in the neighborhood.
“They were fascinating people,” says Bob.
Married for 64 years, they traveled the world,
spoke many languages, and had a passion for
music and the arts. Steve Forbes was a phys-
ics professor in Freeville, NY before mov-
ing to Moylan with Emma. He worked at the
Bartol Research Foundation in Swarthmore for
many years thereafter.
“Other than my parents, Steve and Emma
are most responsible for me being the per-
son I am today,” says Bob, now the Employee
Relations Manager for Penn State and a man
with a child of his own.
On February 17, 2003, Steve Forbes passed
away at the age of 92. Emma passed away
three years later at the age of 90. Many of the
children from the neighborhood – some who
had since moved quite a distance – returned
for their services. Bob and his sister, Suzie
Maney-Osborne, even created a website in
tribute to Steve and Emma.
But Steve and Emma’s generosity did not
end with those in their immediate neigh-
borhood. Quietly in 1996, Steve and Emma
established the Stephen H. Forbes Chari-
table Remainder Unitrust.While the Forbes
Unitrust would provide income to Steve and
Emma during their lifetime, more importantly
it allowed them to support a number of chari-
ties that they felt especially close to. Recently
Lankenau learned that the Hospital was one
of those chosen charities and would receive
more than $800,000.
Dr.Thomas Gabuzda was not surprised by
this incredible act of generosity.“Mr. and Mrs.
Forbes were very unique people and they
truly made an impression on everyone they
came in contact with,” says Dr. Gabuzda, who
was Steve’s oncologist/hematologist at Lan-
kenau for over 20 years.“Mr. Forbes was so
kind and humble. He was a true gentleman. I
remember how he would memorize Russian
poetry and recite it with such passion – in the
Russian language.”
Dr. Gabuzda admiringly tells of how Steve
would chop his own fireplace wood when he
was 90.“Mr. Forbes was this tall, lean man
who always kept himself in great shape,” he
says.“I was honored to have helped take care
of him as he aged with such grace.”
While Lankenau welcomes the opportunity
to recognize and thank individuals who have
made provisions for the Hospital in their
estate plans, it was not aware of Steve and
Emma’s extraordinary provision and there-
fore did not have the opportunity to thank
them during their lifetimes; however, the
Hospital is now taking steps to appropriately
honor them and their gift.
“They really felt a strong connection to our
neighborhood and obviously to Lankenau,”
says Charles Ford, one of six Ford kids who
grew up near the Forbes home.“Some of our
fondest memories of childhood are tied to
Steve and Emma.”

A Child’s Best Friends

inter’s chill bitterly envelops the air. The fine, dusty snowflakes fall down upon
the children as they frolic from one end of the yard to the other. The middle-aged
gentleman teaches the kids how to build an igloo. Gather the snow into a heap, form the
heap into a mountain, carefully dig a tunnel from the outside in. The children burrow
into the snow with their frosty hands. All the while, the gentleman’s wife is preparing hot
chocolate and sugar cookies to be served when the children are done playing.

o know Dolores Dunn is to love her.
“I was holding the door open for
an older woman—one of Dolores’s
students—and she was so happy to tell me
about how wonderful Dolores is,” says Janet
Wendle, Director of the Diabetes Manage-
ment Program at Main Line Health.“People
just love her. She really connects with them
because of her sense of humor, her
personality and her wisdom.”
When Dolores graduated in 1961 from
Thomas Jefferson University’s Nursing
School—only the fifth African-American in
its history to do so—she was faced with a
challenge: where to practice nursing? She
wanted to work at a great hospital outside
of the city, so she chose to come to Lankenau
Hospital. As a native of the Main Line, she fit
into the Hospital’s culture well. At that time
she was one of only two African-American
nurses at Lankenau.Within two years, she
had risen to the level of Head Nurse, a posi-
tion now known as Patient Care Manager.
She has worked at Lankenau for 45 years in
a variety of roles, including teaching nursing
at the now-closed Lankenau Hospital School
of Nursing, supervising the Medical Intensive
Care Unit, and instructing CPR classes.
These days Dolores, 66, works as the man-
ager of the Diabetes Management Program
at Lankenau, ensuring that her students avoid
the common pitfalls of most diabetics.The
Diabetes Management Program is approved
by the American Diabetes Association to help
individuals make and meet goals. Dolores
and her team, consisting of dietician Cathy
Chincola, various physicians, and herself as
diabetes educator, offer classes on keeping
diabetes under control.These classes teach
diabetics how to check their glucose levels,
inject themselves with insulin, and manage
their diabetes through diet and exercise.
Dolores’s goal is one of prevention, which is
one of the reasons why none of her patients
are on dialysis, undergoing wound care
therapy, or have lost any limbs to the disease.
Dolores is a people person, which is the
reason she went into nursing and is success-
ful as a nurse educator.What keeps her from
retiring is the excitement she gets from teach-
ing others how to live life to the fullest.“You
can teach the same thing a thousand times,
but each person is different,” she says.“I like
working with different personalities.”
Teaching and medicine also run in the
family. She is a fifth generation teacher and
her son, Stanley, is an educator in Maryland.
He will start his first year atYale Medical
School next fall.“After Stanley graduated from
Dartmouth, he went into the Peace Corps in
Gabon, Africa. Now he wants to become a
doctor so that he can go back and help.”
Lately, she has been enjoying the lifestyle of
a newlywed. Despite a thirty-year separation,
she and an old flame rekindled their romance
after he joined the Diabetes Management Pro-
gram. She and Dr. Roscoe Murphy, a retired
law professor, married in August 2006 and
have been busy traveling and taking day-trad-
ing classes, to name but a few of their inter-
ests. But these interests promise not to distract
Dolores from continuing to expand her legacy.

When Dick Shafritz was born
in 1928, Amelia Earhart became
the first woman to fly across
the Atlantic and Mickey Mouse
was making his debut in the
cartoon “Steamboat Willie.”
Moviegoers were enthralled by
“Alice Through The Looking
Glass” and Americans
overwhelmingly elected
Herbert Hoover as their next
president. Locally,Valley Forge
Military Academy and College
came into existence.
On the medical front, penicillin was dis-
covered; the Pap test for diagnosing uterine
cancers was developed; and the predeces-
sor of the CT scan was invented. But in 2007
it is safe to say that both Dick Shafritz and
medical technology have come a long way.
As someone who has benefited from the
services of Lankenau, Dick decided to
establish a charitable gift annuity with the
Lankenau Hospital Foundation as a way of
expressing his gratitude for the care he
received. After considering a variety of
hospital programs he determined that the
remainder from his gift annuity would be
used to support the daVinci Robotic Surgi-
cal System. But he never thought he would
have the opportunity for a hands-on experi-
ence with this marvelous new technology.
On a recent visit to Lankenau Hospital,
Dick had the exciting opportunity to be at
the controls and experience the sophisti-
cated ability of the new daVinci Surgical
System – a robotic system designed to
offer patients a minimally invasive alter-
native to open surgery.
Guided by the skill of Dr. Max Ahn from
the Urology department, Dick was able
to operate the system. He became fairly
adept at maneuvering the mechanical
arms with the pencil thin wrists by means
of hand and foot controls, while viewing
the whole procedure on a video monitor.
He could almost imagine being a young
surgeon and performing delicate surgery
with this sophisticated system.Yes, he
thought to himself, it is possible to teach
an old donor new tricks.
But, in choosing to establish a gift annuity
with Lankenau, Dick showed that he knows
other tricks. He knew that such a gift would
provide a fixed income that is guaran-
teed for life, valuable income tax savings
through a sizeable charitable deduction,
and a significant portion of tax-free income
over his projected life expectancy. And,
most importantly, he has the satisfaction
of knowing that he is helping Lankenau
acquire and use the latest technology to
better serve its patients. Not too bad for
an old donor.
