The Spratly Islands are a disputed group of over 100 islands, reefs and cays in the South China Sea. Sovereignty over the region is claimed entirely by China, Taiwan, Vietnam and partly by the Philippines, Malaysia, and Brunei. The largest islands occupied are Itu Aba island by Taiwan and Thitu island by the Philippines. Vietnam occupies the most features at 26, followed by the Philippines at 10. The Philippines controls the most unoccupied features due to its proximity. Whether due to potential oil and gas deposits, maritime rights, or fishing grounds, the islands remain a source of ongoing territorial disputes between countries in the region.
