Parts of a Sport News
1. Headline
2. The Lead
 The Key Play
 The Outstanding Player
 The Analytical Approach
3. The Body
 Highlights of the Game
 Decisive Play
 Play by play
 Comparison of the Teams
 Best Score of the Day
 Quotation

The headline should be
an abbreviated sentence
summarizing the game.
What is a striking headline?
-The headline of a sports coverage story
should tell right away who or which
team won over whom or whose team
( and whenever appropriate or
applicable, by what score).
-Appropriate action words should be
used to indicate who won depending
on how the event unfolded
The headline should have:
SUBJECT + VERB (Present tense) + OBJECT
Example:
Juniors dethrones Seniors
It would be better if you will add the final score.
Juniors dethrones Seniors, 93-86
Examples:
Beermen dump Gins, 106-93

 LEAD – summarizes or analyzes the event by
giving the significance, the winner, the hero, the
score, the place and time.
 BODY – contains the play-by-play account of the
game like the most crucial part, star player,
weaknesses and strengths.
 CONCLUSION – usually contains quotes from
players, coaches and statistics.
Lead
 Key Play
 Key Player / Outstanding Player
 Analytical
Key Play- this is usually used
when the best angle of the sports
is through the collective effort of
all the mentors of the team.
•Example:
Defending champion Seniors overcame
a jittery start to get back in the winning track as
they trounced the Juniors, 82-65, in the
Basketball Championship Game during
ASSNHS Intramural Meet at Covered Court,
today.
Note: This time, in developing the lead and body
of your story use past form of the verb.
To indicate time like TODAY,
YESTERDAY, THIS MORNING, THIS
AFTERNOON are enough.
Key Player / Outstanding Player
when one or two members of the
team seem to standout of the rest of
the players to push the team to
victory, the player/s’ heroic deed is the
best angle to start the story.
Example:
James Yap shone like there was no tomorrow
when his do-or-die three pointer shot dove ringless
with less than five seconds to lead Purefoods Giants
to its convincing victory, 76-73, over Red Bull
Barakos in a basketball exhibition game yesterday at
the Araneta Coliseum.
Note: Spell out the name of the
team or school in the lead.
Always indicate the
final score or set score in the lead.
Analytical - this is used when the
team employs a very spectacular
strategy or action that brings them
to victory.
Example:
Seniors proved that height is not the
end-all and be-all as they outclassed the
Juniors in a battle of skills and perseverance,
78-76, to win the match at the FTC
basketball court, today.
What should lead contain?
The leadshould contain these elements:
1. Who were involved
2. What happened
3. When
4. Where
5. What is the sport
6. What is the final score
7. Howthe game was won.
Example:
QUEZON CITY. Lightly-regarded NU Bulldogs pulled
another come-from-behind victory over perennial
favorite UST Growling Tigers, 64-62, Saturday to stay
in the hunt for a Final Four slot in the 67th UAAP
Men’s Basketball Tournament at the Blue Eagle Gym
in Quezon City.
We can see the most of the elements are present:
1. Whowere involved? – NUBulldogsandUSTGrowlingTigers
2. What happened?– NUpulledanothercome-from-behindvictoryoverUST
3. When?– Saturday
4. Where?– BlueEagleGymin QuezonCity
5. What is the sport?– Basketball(specifically,UAAPMen’sBasketball)
6. What is the finalscore? – 64-62
7. Howthe game was won? – Come-from-behind
End the story with a quotation
3. Quote – This is where you can
provide a quote from the coach or a
key player from both teams. You can
precede each saying with a lead-in
paragraph or go straight into the
quote.

3 MAIN POINTS
TO REMEMBER IN WRITING
A SPORTS ARTICLE
1. USE SIMPLE TERMS / LINGO’S
2. GO STRAIGHT TO THE POINT /
MAIN POINT
3. REFRAIN FROM STATING NONSENSE
WORDS IN PARAGRAPHS
HEADLINE
- make it striking and appealing
to the judges but don’t oover
exaggerate it
- must be easy to understand
LEAD (1st paragraph)
- general overview but
don’t give out every detail
of the game highlights
- 5 W’s
2nd and 3rd
paragraph
- reveal the lead through
stats
- final score of the game
- players key in winning
the game / how did the
PLAY-BY-PLAY
- focus only on one angle
- if it’s a dominant game, state
the impactful plays
- if late surge or come from
behind (upset), build up the
game but in the chosen angle.
LOSERS SIDE
- most highlighted play of
the loser
- must be followed up by
“But it wasn’t enough”
QUOTE
- either the winner or the
loser of the game
- must be connected to how
the winner won the game or
how the loser lost the game
LAST
PARAGRAPH
- winners upcoming match /
plans in the future
tips for improving
1. Always reveal the final score in the
lead.
2. Be on the lookout for great
moments, outstanding players,
interesting tidbits, records
established, crowd reaction, crowd
numbers, weather condition, or any
unexpected “twists” that occurred
during the game.
3 . Know sports writing style: scores are
numerals separated by hyphens (12-6, not
12 to 6); team records are numerals
separated by hyphens (8-2, not 8 and 2);
winning scores always come first, even if
your school did not win the contest (your
team lost 12-6, not 6-12). Spell your
opponents' school name and nickname or
mascot correctly.
4. To avoid using the player’s name over
and over in the story, “identifyers” or
backgrounders” may be used, such as:
•5-foot-8 libero from Brazil
•The son of four-time MVP Alvin Patrimonio
• the former Atlanta Braves pitcher
• the multi-titled trackster
• the southpaw (left-handed) boxer from
General Santos
7. Keep your paragraphs short. An
adequate sports story should
consist of not more that 500 words.
8. Do not put a summary at the end of
the story or editorialize in the
concluding paragraph. End the
article with the least important fact
there is or with an interesting quote.
