The 7th annual Second Chance 5K run/walk will take place on March 25th, 2023 at Givens Elementary School in Las Vegas. The event supports those impacted by substance use disorders and celebrates recovery. It was created in memory of three women who died of accidental opioid overdoses. Last year's event had nearly 1,000 attendees and offered community resources. This year's event will again offer family activities and support for the local recovery community. Mission
Second Chance 5K is a Las Vegas-based non-profit organization committed to connecting
communities impacted by substance use disorders and celebrating second chances
for those in recovery.
Story
Second Chance 5k was created in memory of three women who died from accidental opioid
overdoses: Leah Schlauder, Amber Schlauder, and Kristi Lowell. They were the reasons for the
first 5k in 2017, but our families have found many more reasons to continue the annual
community event. We've learned that more of our friends and neighbors are impacted by this
disease than we ever realized. Drug addiction does not discriminate and there are so many
people in our city who are hurting. The name Second Chance 5k came from the sincere belief
that we all deserve second chances, third chances, and as many chances as it takes to heal.

Event
Last year's event had nearly 1,000 people in attendance; locals from the suburbs of Las Vegas
and rehabs across the valley showed up. There were 20 resource tables offering valuable
information for families impacted by addiction. As always, it was a family-friendly event with
food trucks, face painters, balloon artists, a firetruck, a DJ, and the radio station Coyote 102.7.
The beautiful 3.1 mile loop in Summerlin was an ideal location to feel genuine hope and human
connection. Our annual event is a celebration of second chances!
