Spix's macaw is a critically endangered species of parrot native to Brazil. It inhabits forest galleries and feeds on seeds, nuts, fruits and other plant materials. Its diet helps its strong beak to break food and climb. Though its natural habitat was the Caatinga dry forests of Brazil, it is now likely extinct in the wild with only around 96 individuals remaining in captivity. The Brazilian government is working on a project to restore the species through breeding programs with the goal of reintroducing them to the wild.
