Spix’s macaw are
native in Brazil. They
are also known as
“little blue macaw”.
Spix’s macaw inhabits the Caraibeira
riparian woodland galleries in a semi-arid
territory known as the Caatinga.
Their natural diet:
Seeds
Nuts
Fruits(mainly cactus fruits
Flowers
Leaves
And other plant material in
range.
Spix’s macaw
uses their beak for
breaking their food.
This also help them
to climb.
But this macaw is
critically endangered
that only 96 registered
birds are in captivity.
The Brazilian government
department of natural
resources (ICMBio) is
conducting a project
Ararinha-Azul with an
associated plan to restore
the species to the wild as
soon as sufficient breeding
birds and restored habitat
are available.
Top facts
 One of the rarest birds in the
world, Spix’s macaw is believed to
have become Extinct in the Wild
and now probably only remains in
captivity.
 In 1990 a single wild male Spix’s
macaw was discovered paired with
a female blue-winged macaw, but
both individuals disappeared in
2000.
Spix’s macaw is relatively long-lived,
estimates suggest it could
reach 20 to 30 years of age in the
wild.
