Background
SPE is the largest individual membership organization serving
professional engineers, scientists and managers in the exploration and
production (E&P) segments of the worldwide oil and gas industry.
Brief History
Our history begins within the American Institute of Mining,
Metallurgical and Petroleum Engineers (AIME).
AIME was founded in 1871 in Pennsylvania, USA to advance the
production of metals, minerals and energy resources through the
application of engineering.
In 1913, a standing committee on oil and gas was created within
AIME and proved to be the genesis of the Society of Petroleum
Engineers (SPE).
In 1957, the organization was officially founded as SPE, a constituent
society of AIME. And SPE became a separately incorporated
organization in 1985.
Memberships
It is associated in the world with more than 143,000 members
participate in 199 sections in 147 countries and 337 student chapters.

Background
SPE Cairo University Student Chapter is one of the biggest, most
effective and reputable student chapters among the 337 student
chapters that represent SPE International in 147 countries all over
the world, was founded in 1987.
For its uniqueness and outstanding performance in improving and
developing students and qualifying them to match the
requirements of the industry in general and the Oil & Gas industry
in particular; it has been awarded lots of awards from SPE
International. The “2009 Outstanding Chapter Award” and The
“2014 Outstanding Chapter Award” were the most significant
awards.
SPE CUSC has reached such an outstanding performance through
its ambitious well planned and organized events which aim to link
the Academic life to the Practical life and allow the students to
know what is going in real life work environment.
SPE CUSC, as a non-profit organization, it plans, organizes, and
holds a lot of events, most of them are totally free of charge.

July 2006, SPE Chapter of the month all over the world.
October 2008, SPE Outstanding Middle East Student Chapter,
one of the best six outstanding chapters all over the world,
Final Contest in Louisiana, United States, ATCE 2008.
January 2009, SPE Chapter of the month all over the world.
2009, SPE Outstanding Chapter Award all over the world,
Final Contest in New Orleans, United States, ATCE 2009.
The Outstanding Student Chapter Award (OSC) is presented to the
chapters whose programs, activities, and levels of participation
during a single academic year distinguish that chapter from
others.
SPE CUSC was the first student chapter in Africa & in the Middle
East to achieve this award.
SPE CUSC President “Ahmed Ragab” & his Vice “Ahmad Ali”
received the award on behalf of the chapter in USA.
2011, Our chapter has achieved the Gold Standard Award.
Only 26 (out of more than 200) student chapters met the Gold
Standard for 2011. The Gold Standard is an exceptional
standard at which the student chapter performs in the
categories of membership, planning, education,
professionalism, service, support, and fundraising.
2013, Our chapter has achieved the Gold Standard Award again.
2014, SPE Outstanding Chapter Award all over the world again.
So definetly, SPE Cairo University Student Chapter is the
most awarded chapter in the Middle East region and from the
most awarded chapters in the world.

SPE Main Rules
No Religious, Political, Sports discussions are allowed during
any meeting.
Any Racist discrimination based on any type is not allowed in
our entity.
Any social harassment between the members will be strictly
dealt with.
Heads are supposed to inform their members with the time of
the meetings at least two days beforehand.
In case of absence, the heads must be informed before the
meeting with at least one day.
While wearing anything that is related to SPE CUSC (T-shirt,
bag...), you are SPE CUSC's image, so be aware of your actions
which may affect the whole entity.
Any submitted task will be sent via a specific channel, based on
the head’s vision, (e-mail, Facebook Chat,..etc) to the Head,
Vice Head and the project/committee HR representative.
Time respect is very critical regarding any meeting/task
delivery.
If any problem occurs in your Project/Committee, follow your
organization hierarchy and contact your Head, Vice Head,
and/or HR representative.

Rules of Communication
Committees will communicate with each other through the
Officers. This is an integral part of SPE’s communication
system.
Officers will form the means of communication between all
committees.
Only Officers have the right to communicate informally or
formally with any Member or Head in SPE CUSC. Such
communication will be to ensure effectiveness and
efficiency.
In case a member has any complaint regarding a fellow
member in his committee, he should privately send it to the
HR Representative of his committee.
The HR Representative should communicate any complaints
to the Head of the committee to take corrective action within
the boundaries of SPE rules and values.
In case a member has any complaint regarding a member of
another committee or the head of his committee, the HR
Representative should communicate it to the HR Head to
take corrective action within the boundaries of SPE rules
and values.
Heads should send their complaints only to the Officers.
A General Meeting (GM) must be held periodically for all SPE
active members to attend. The GM will allow members to
share updates about their committees, and the Officers can
share upcoming activities in SPE CUSC with the members.
Outings should be given high priority as a part of spirit-
building activities. They will be set 1-2 months apart.
In case of urgent tasks, the head can contact the chapter’s
Internal Liaison (Vice President) for the required request.
