TRANSVERSAL
A transversal is a line that intersects two
or more coplanar lines at different points.
In the diagram below, line t is the
transversal.

The angles formed by two lines and a transversal
have special names:

CORRESPONDING ANGLES
o Two angles are corresponding angles if they
occupy corresponding positions.
∠1 and ∠5
∠3 and ∠7
∠2 and ∠6
∠4 and ∠8
ALTERNATE INTERIOR ANGLES
o Two angles are alternate interior angles if
they lie between the two lines on opposite
sides of the transversal.
The following pairs of angles are
alternate interior angles:

ALTERNATE EXTERIOR ANGLES
o Two angles are alternate exterior angles if
they lie outside of the two lines on opposite sides
of the transversal.

SAME-SIDE INTERIOR ANGLES
o Two angles are same-side interior angles
if they lie between the two lines on the
same side of the transversal.

o Two angles are same-side exterior angles
if they lie outside the 2 intersected lines of the
