3 Three Typical Foods in El Salvador
Pupusas are similar to corn tortillas, but they are thicker and stuffed with cheese, beans, or meat.
Even though it originated in El Salvador, it is very popular in Honduras.
Salsa Roja is a very simple Salvadoran cooked tomato sauce, but yet full of flavor. It can also
be served alongside with pupusas and curtido.
Curtido is a simple cabbage salad traditionally served with pupusas. It is also kept in large jars
at restaurants because sides of curtido are served with most meals.
The Flag of El Salvador
The flag was used be Colonel Manuel Jose Arce of El Salvador in 1822. The flag has 3
horizontal stripes with the same width, they are blue, white, and blue respectively. In the middle of the
flag there is El Salvador's coat-of-arms. Around the coat-of-arms it says Republica De El Salvador En
La America Central. Under the coat-of-arms it had the national motto, “Dios Union Libertad (God,
Union, Liberty). Sometimes the flag is flown with or with out the coat-of-arms or motto.

2. Weather/Climate
In El Salvador the altitudes are different, but the tropical climates only vary by a couple
degrees. Year-round temperatures are typically 73ºF and 80ºF. El Salvador is frequently struck by
earthquakes because of its location. In the US we have 4 seasons, but in El Salvador there are 2
seasons. They are the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season occurs from November to
April. The rainy season occurs from May to October.

Tourist Attractions
The Mayan Ruins of Tazumal cover about 10 sq km. It is located in Chalchuapa, Santa Ana. These
ruins hold many little secrets and historical treasures left to find. Tazumal consists of a group of
buildings that formed the lifeline of a very important and sophisticated people. Even though it covers,
10 sq km, it hasn't been fully excavated.
San Andrés is a bunch of Mayan ruins. It is an impressive group of ceremonial centers and pyramids.
It was first discovered in the 19th century. Even though it was discovered in the 19th century,
excavations didn't start until the 1940's. Discoveries in the ancient site prove that San Andrés had
business dealings with the Mayans in Mexico and Honduras.
Major Cities
San Salvador is the cosmopolitan center of El Salvador. It is El Salvador's capital and most populated
area. San Salvador is a city with eternal energy. On the streets, vendors take control of the roads
leaving only an inch on each side. It also has great music, museums, bars, and coffee shops.
Santa Ana is a major city in El Salvador. It is the only major city in El Salvador that is colonial. It has
a shady plaza, grand old buildings, and a cathedral. Plus, it has a decent selection of accommodations,
a lively food and bar scene, and big-city services. Santa Ana also provides a fine place to spend for a
couple of days.
