ICONIC
SOUNDSCONNECTED WITH THE
THRILLER GENRE
GUNSHOT
What doesn’t scream ‘action’ like a gun shot? Guns are the most
common weapons in action thrillers if not all movies; the sound
of a gun firing is very distinctive and so even without being able
to see the actual gun, just by hearing the noise of it, the audience
can easily determine what it is. The sound of a gun being shot is
also very loud and sudden and so it fits in well with the action
thriller genre.
SCREAM/SHOUT
Violence is very common in action thrillers and so screams of pain
are very frequent. Again, like the sound of a gun-shot, a scream
is easy to identify without being able to see the source. The
sound of a scream in the distance gives the audience the idea
that someone is in danger and needs help.
ENGINES ROARING
The sound of an engine roaring is a powerful sound and so to
show a character revving an engine and making this powerful
sound makes them look powerful as well. It also connotes to
the idea of car and motorbike chases which are a frequent
feature in action thrillers.
Violent and sudden actions like a window breaking or a car
crashing become even more intense when a loud crashing
noise accompanies them, therefore it gives a more intense feel
for anyone watching.
CRASHES/SMASHES
In films when a character punches another a sound effect is often
added to make a lot more of a noise than in a real life punch,
this is to give a more violent feel to the punch. Sometimes
though, especially in smaller fights in films these sound effects
wont be added to show that it is not an important fight.
