First Sorrowful Mystery
The Agony in the Garden
In his anguish, he prayed with all the greater
intensity, and his sweat became like drops of
blood falling to the ground. Then he rose from
prayer and came to his disciples, only to find them
asleep, exhausted with grief.

The Sorrowful Mysteries represent “the culmination

1. Jesus took leave of his mother
This desire for suffering
and the wishes of my divine

2.** Jesus prayed to the Father
Sin is the cause of Our
Lord’s mortal agony. Let us
ask for contrition over our
sins. Let us pray for the
conversion of sinners and
especially our own
conversion.

3. **He had sight of an angel from Heaven, encouraging Him.

He took all the
pain because He
loved us, and
wanted to heal
us of our sins,
and of all the
diseases of the
body, mind and

3. To set us free: By the scourging He received, He
wants to set us free, of all types of oppression and bondage.

3.**** “Father, Forgive them for they know not what
they do.” It is not in our power not to feel or to
forget an offense, but the heart that offers itself to the Holy

4.** “ Remember me ”
The good thief accepted his suffering and was saved. The bad thief
rejected the cross leading to his perdition. Suffering makes souls grow if
they accept it with love and submission but it is an occasion of perdition
for those who revolt against God. Sufferings are the pre-eminent graces
of God.
