The letter of James is a message from James, a church leader in Jerusalem, to believers scattered throughout the world who were facing hardships. He encourages them to consider trials a joy, knowing that enduring them will strengthen their faith. He advises asking God for wisdom to know how to respond. While hardships come from our own human desires and not from God, he provides a way of escape if we turn to his word for guidance rather than anger.
Wednesday Night Series - "How People Change", Week 3CLADSM
God understands the full range of struggles people face in life, from burdens and hardships to joys and opportunities, as reflected in passages like Psalm 88 and James 1 which describe trials and temptations. While the world surprises us with suffering, the Bible comforts us that God is aware of our deepest struggles and offers help tailored to our individual needs and situations. Christians should help others find solace in knowing God understands what they experience so they can turn to him for genuine help.
The document summarizes the story of Job from the Bible. It discusses how Job suffers greatly and loses everything, but maintains faith in God despite not understanding why. Job's friends claim his suffering is due to sin, which Job rejects. God later appears to Job and does not provide explanations, but Job humbly accepts that God's wisdom is beyond human understanding. The document emphasizes that suffering is part of life in a complex world affected by sin and evil, rather than directly caused by God's will.
Prophet Joy Allen discusses the importance of love in ministry. She states that love is better demonstrated than proclaimed, and requires sacrifice as shown through Christ's death for sinners. She outlines the qualities of love according to 1 Corinthians 13 and states that God is love, as shown through sending His Son. Allen urges listeners to duplicate God's love for people in the world by showing mercy and operating in love, rather than condemnation, as Jesus did.
1. Frustration occurs when meaningful goals are thwarted, leading to pent up emotions that can result in undesirable behaviors if not addressed properly.
2. Jesus provides the perfect model for dealing with frustration in a healthy way. His teachings emphasize turning to God, accessing God's throne of grace through prayer, submitting to God's will, and maintaining an attitude of gratitude.
3. When facing frustration, one should seek guidance from God's word, pray humbly while depending on God's wisdom and power, remember that God is in control, and give thanks for God's goodness.

He is the Mighty, the Wise." Surah Al-Jumuah 62:3-4
A companion of The Holy Prophet sa relates: One day we were sitting with The Holy Prophet sa when this chapter was revealed. I enquired from Muhammad sa. This document discusses successful prayers. It provides an overview of a presentation on praying successfully based on passages from the Bible. The objectives are to prepare for prayer by aligning with God in relationship, honoring Him alone, seeking His heart and burdens, and demonstrating total dependence. It discusses prerequisites of prayer including private communion not for show, meaningful relationship over meaningless repetition, and listening to God. Key aspects of preeminence in prayer are addressing God as loving Father, honoring His name, invoking His kingdom, and submitting to His will. Petitions include daily bread, forgiveness, prevention of temptation, and deliverance from evil. Praise includes God's kingdom, power and glory forever.
The document discusses Jesus' teachings on lust, immorality, and divorce. It addresses how desire turns to sin if not kept in check, and how to "disassociate" from sinful circumstances through figuratively "cutting off" offending parts. Jesus forbids divorce except in cases of adultery or pre-marital fornication, establishing marriage as a lifelong commitment. For those unable to receive this teaching, dedicating oneself to celibacy for the sake of the Kingdom is recommended.
This document provides a personal interpretation of the Lord's Prayer focused on universal brotherhood. It argues that the prayer's message of avoiding temptation through discrimination, isolation, or vengeance and being delivered from evil that divides can be understood by all people, whether religious or not. 1. The passage discusses the disciples' confusion over Jesus' statements about leaving them for a little while but then returning. Jesus explains that their sorrow will be transformed into joy.
2. He tells them that while they will grieve, their grief will turn to joy, just as a woman forgets her pain in the joy of childbirth. They are to ask the Father for anything in Jesus' name.
3. Taking courage in Jesus, believers can have peace despite tribulations, as He has overcome the world.
Bono discusses his Christian faith and how grace operates in contrast to karma. While karma means what you put out comes back to you, grace interrupts this through God's forgiveness. Bono believes in grace because he has made mistakes and would be in trouble if judged by his actions alone. The author agrees grace, not works, saves us and calls us to extend grace to others as we have received it from God.

TMIY - Becoming a Man after God's Own Heart - Week 18PDEI
This document discusses how pornography consumption can enslave the heart and shrink it from its purpose. It outlines a daily and weekly Lenten program for spiritual growth, with the first exercise being a time evaluation. The document warns that pornography is highly addictive due to chemical reactions in the brain and can alter one's mental reality. The conclusion exhorts embracing purity through steps like frequent confession and seeking help when needed. It advocates fulfilling authentic male leadership through qualities like moral leadership and sacrifice.
God is fully self-sufficient and needs nothing outside of himself. While God does not need humanity, he created and redeems people out of his love so that he may fill them with himself. God calls people to obey, serve, pray and worship not because he is lacking anything, but so that people may experience the fullness of joy found in him. All that people are and do is a gift from God, who desires relationship with humanity and to share in his work, though he receives no benefit from people.
This document explains the Beatitudes from the Sermon on the Mount in Matthew 5:3-12. It provides context on the meaning of "beatitude" and discusses each blessing that Jesus states, beginning with "Blessed are...". For each beatitude, it explains the character quality being blessed and provides a short reflection. The overall document aims to clarify what the Beatitudes are and explain the blessings that Jesus pronounced for those who embodied certain inward qualities like being poor in spirit, mourning, being meek, hungering for righteousness, being merciful, and being persecuted for righteousness.
God's love is revealed through suffering when people are unfaithful. God suffers when those he loves suffer because love always suffers with the loved one. Though God hates sin because it destroys people made in his image, he still loves sinners despite their sins. God seeks to restore sinners, forgiving them and offering eternal life through belief in his son as the savior who came to save the lost.
The document discusses the faith and love shown by the Thessalonian believers. It notes that their faith was growing greatly and their love for one another was abundant. It also mentions that they endured persecutions and hardships patiently, demonstrating the righteous judgment of God and making them worthy of God's kingdom.

The Beatitudes promise blessings to those who are poor in spirit, mourn, are meek, hunger for righteousness, are merciful, are pure in heart, make peace, and are persecuted for righteousness. Each Beatitude highlights an aspect of following Christ by surrendering to God completely and living with compassion for others.
The document discusses how to "press in and press on" with God through three key points:
1. Know God by understanding his compassionate and forgiving nature as described in scripture.
2. Develop a heart like Caleb that is wholly committed to following God no matter the obstacles, as Caleb demonstrated loyalty and vigor to God until old age.
3. Have a hunger and thirst for God through obedience, as emphasized in passages encouraging people to come to God and heed his words in order to find fulfillment and receive blessings, rather than relying on their own efforts.

"He endured, as seeing him who is invisible." —
Heb. 11 : 27.
HE endured. The word here means more
than if it were said, he bore his bur-
den well; and more than that he
waited with long suffering until the end came.
It means that he had strength to be stedfast.
There was a deep and constant force from
within with which he met the strange vicissi-
tudes of his life.
This document provides an overview of a session on experiencing listening prayer. It establishes that believing in Jesus' resurrection is foundational. Several Bible passages are presented that show the religious leaders missed God because they did not believe in Jesus, and because they cared more about what people thought than God. Love is discussed as the primary motivation for listening prayer. Believing in the resurrection relates to having the Holy Spirit guide us. Discussion questions address factors like doubt, intellectualism, and pride that can hinder listening to God. Prayer focuses on caring more what God thinks and developing faith in Jesus' resurrection.
Life can sometimes throw us with unexpected situations, leaving us feeling out of our depth. We all face challenges, whether it's the weight of responsibilities, a storm of unforeseen setbacks, or the whirlwind of daily struggles. But here's the thing: we have a timeless help, a fountain of wisdom to draw upon in the midst of those struggles. Our text today can be found in Psalms 42, a passage that gives us guidance when we're caught in life's storms.

Our little Church is using a Chronological Bible Reading Schedule by Skip Andrews. It can be found here: http://www.churchofchristduluthga.org/
Each Sunday a lesson is given from some of that week's reading. This lesson covers May 4-10.
This document discusses how to prepare one's heart for listening prayer through confession of sin and trusting in God rather than giving in to fear. It explores how denying sins and fear can make our hearts unclean and hinder hearing from God. The document provides scriptures and prayers focused on cleansing the heart by confessing sin, surrendering to God, resisting the devil, and humbling oneself before God to receive his guidance.
Our theories about God are our theology.
It is well to value them, to try our best to
keep them pure and high. But the deeper
question is. What is our religion? What are
our real thoughts of God ? In that deep and
secret place of our inmost consciousness, where
all our desires and feelings and hopes and
aspirations are born, what is God to us ? This
is the great question, the searching question.
And on the answer to it our peace, our happi-
ness, our usefulness depend.
This document summarizes a chapter from the book "The Building of Character Vol. 2" by J.R. Miller. The chapter discusses how prayer is one of the most effective ways to help friends and loved ones. It notes that true friendship involves praying for others and involving God. While people can help others in practical ways, prayer allows one to seek God's guidance and help for a friend. The chapter emphasizes praying for friends' spiritual well-being and alignment with God's will over material concerns or one's own desires. It suggests prayer may involve sacrifice but helps transform perspectives and bring peace.
11.11.04 the lord's prayer 6th petition-and lead us not into temptationJustin Morris
God promises to provide his grace and strength to resist temptation. When tempted, we should not say that God is tempting us, as God cannot be tempted by evil and does not tempt others. Instead, each person is tempted when their own evil desires drag them away. God promises a way of escape from every temptation. We can take God's way of escape by calling on him for help in prayer or by seeking help from Christian friends.
This document discusses the importance of praise based on several biblical passages. It covers various topics related to praise, including:
1) God is worthy of praise due to His greatness and wonderful works.
2) Developing a spirit of praise opens our eyes to God's presence. When we praise God, focusing on who He is, we experience His companionship.
3) Praise should be a regular part of our relationship with God, as it was for King David who praised God seven times a day. Regular praise enhances our awareness of God's presence.
Then my head will be exalted

at his tabernacle will I sacrifice with shouts of joy;
I will sing and make music to the LORD.

How to Know God Better
The Earthly and the Heavenly
This document contains excerpts from various spiritual writings focused on topics like suffering, humility, sin, and finding peace in God. Some key points:
- Suffering is necessary and intended by God to purify and heal, not as punishment. It should be borne peacefully by accepting God's will.
- True humility involves being at peace even when humiliated and focusing on obedience to God rather than desires of the ego.
- Finding relief from problems in worldly things like changing circumstances or alcohol only provides temporary relief, not healing. True healing and cleansing of sin comes only from God.
Rick Warren, Purpose Driven Life: Section 14, When God Seems DistantRichard Chamberlain

2. It provides perspectives from various biblical figures and authors on enduring periods when God feels absent, including by expressing feelings to God and focusing on his unchanging character.
3. The key message is that nothing is wrong during such times; they are opportunities to deepen faith through trusting in God when one cannot feel him.
Worship,Connect,Grow,Serve Glorifying God Oct13,08BertBrim
The document discusses various aspects of worship, fellowship, and spiritual growth according to God's discipleship plan. This lecture created by Brandon Taylorian (aka Cometan) specially for the CESNUR Conference held Bordeaux in June 2024 provides a brief introduction to the legacy of religious and philosophical thought that Astronism emerges from, namely the discourse on transcension started assuredly by the Cosmists in Russia in the mid-to-late nineteenth century and then carried on and developed by Mordecai Nessyahu in Cosmodeism in the twentieth century. Cometan also then provides some detail on his story in founding Astronism in the early twenty-first century from 2013 along with details on the central Astronist doctrine of transcension. Finally, the lecture concludes with some contributions made by space religions and space philosophy and their influences on various cultural facets in art, literature and film.

Lucid Dreaming: Understanding the Risks and Benefits
The ability to control one's dreams or for the dreamer to be aware that he or she is dreaming. This process, called lucid dreaming, has some potential risks as well as many fascinating benefits. However, many people are hesitant to try it initially for fear of the potential dangers. This article aims to clarify these concerns by exploring both the risks and benefits of lucid dreaming.
The Benefits of Lucid Dreaming
Lucid dreaming allows a person to take control of their dream world, helping them overcome their fears and eliminate nightmares. This technique is particularly useful for mental health. By taking control of their dreams, individuals can face challenging scenarios in a controlled environment, which can help reduce anxiety and increase self-confidence.
Addressing Common Concerns
Physical Harm in Dreams Lucid dreaming is fundamentally safe. In a lucid dream, everything is a creation of your mind. Therefore, nothing in the dream can physically harm you. Despite the vividness and realness of the dream experience, it remains entirely within your mental landscape, posing no physical danger.
Mental Health Risks Concerns about developing PTSD or other mental illnesses from lucid dreaming are unfounded. As soon as you wake up, it's clear that the events experienced in the dream were not real. On the contrary, lucid dreaming is often seen as a therapeutic tool for conditions like PTSD, as it allows individuals to reframe and manage their thoughts.
Potential Risks of Lucid Dreaming
While generally safe, lucid dreaming does come with a few risks as well:
Mixing Dream Memories with Reality Long-term lucid dreamers might occasionally confuse dream memories with real ones, creating false memories. This issue is rare and preventable by maintaining a dream journal and avoiding lucid dreaming about real-life people or places too frequently.
Escapism Using lucid dreaming to escape reality can be problematic if it interferes with your daily life. While it is sometimes beneficial to escape and relieve the stress of reality, relying on lucid dreaming for happiness can hinder personal growth and productivity.
Feeling Tired After Lucid Dreaming Some people report feeling tired after lucid dreaming. This tiredness is not due to the dreams themselves but often results from not getting enough sleep or using techniques that disrupt sleep patterns. Taking breaks and ensuring adequate sleep can prevent this.
Mental Exhaustion Lucid dreaming can be mentally taxing if practiced excessively without breaks. It’s important to balance lucid dreaming with regular sleep to avoid mental fatigue.
Lucid dreaming is safe and beneficial if done with caution. It has many benefits, such as overcoming fear and improving mental health, and minimal risks. There are many resources and tutorials available for those interested in trying it.

The Spiritual Disciplines of Simplicity and Solitude_UTS Formation Chapel Presentation (with YouTube embedded)
1. Celebration of Discipline
.
The Path to Spiritual Growth – “Simplicity” & “Solitude”
By Richard J. Foster
Presented by
Tomika McFadden and Angeline Lee
United Theological Seminary - Dayton, OH
3. An Introduction to Simplicity…
• What is the spiritual
discipline of “simplicity”?
• What gift does the
practice of simplicity offer
a practicing, spiritual
leader?
4. Psalm 62 (NRSV)
Song of Trust in God Alone
To the leader: according to Jeduthun. A Psalm of David.
1 For God alone my soul waits in silence;
from him comes my salvation.
2 He alone is my rock and my
salvation,
my fortress; I shall never be shaken.
3 How long will you assail a person,
will you batter your victim, all of you,
as you would a leaning wall, a
tottering fence?
4 Their only plan is to bring down a
person of prominence.
They take pleasure in falsehood;
they bless with their mouths,
but inwardly they curse. Selah
5 For God alone my soul waits in silence,
for my hope is from him.
6 He alone is my rock and my
salvation,
my fortress; I shall not be shaken.
7 On God rests my deliverance and my
honor; my mighty rock, my refuge is
in God.
8 Trust in him at all times, O people;
pour out your heart before him;
God is a refuge for us. Selah
9 Those of low estate are but a breath,
those of high estate are a
delusion;
in the balances they go up;
they are together lighter than a
breath.
10 Put no confidence in extortion,
and set no vain hopes on
robbery;
if riches increase, do not set your
heart on them.
11 Once God has spoken;
twice have I heard this:
that power belongs to God,
12 and steadfast love belongs to
you, O Lord.
For you repay to all
according to their work.
5. A Prayer of Simplicity
“O God, we beseech thee to save us this
day from the distractions of vanity and
the false lure of inordinate desires. Grant
us the grace of a quite and humbled
mind, and may we learn of Jesus to be
meek and lowly of heart. May we not join
the throng of those who seek after things
that never satisfy and who draw others
after them in the fever of covetousness.
Save us from adding our influence to the
drag of temptation. If the fierce tide of
greed beats against the breakwaters of
our soul, may we rest at peace in thy
higher contentment. In the press of life
may we pass from duty to duty in
tranquility of heart and spread they
quietness to all who come near.”

discipline of “solitude”?
• What gift does the
practice of solitude
offer a practicing,
spiritual leader?
7.
8. Psalm 43 (NRSV)
Psalm of Solitude
Vindicate me, O God, and defend my cause against an ungodly
people; from deceitful and unjust men deliver me! 2 For thou art
the God in whom I take refuge; why hast thou cast me off? Why
go I mourning because of the oppression of the enemy? 3 Oh
send out thy light and thy truth; let them lead me, let them bring
me to thy holy hill and to thy dwelling! 4 Then I will go to the altar
of God, to God my exceeding joy; and I will praise thee with the
lyre, O God, my God. 5 Why are you cast down, O my soul, and
why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall again
praise him, my help and my God.
9. A Prayer of Solitude
by Thomas Merton
My Lord God, I have no idea where I am
going.
I do not see the road ahead of me and I
cannot know for certain where it will
end.
Nor do I really know myself, and the fact
that I think I am following your will
does
not mean that I am actually doing so.
But I believe that the desire to please you
does in fact please you.
And I hope that I have that desire in all
that I am doing.
I hope that I will never do anything apart
from that desire.
I know if I do this you will lead me by the
right road though I may know
nothing about it. Therefore, I will trust you
always
though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow
of death.
I will not fear for you are ever with me and you
will never leave me to face my perils alone.
10. Song of Solitude
Blue God by Jessica Reedy
The attached song via the
YouTube Link is by Sunday’s Best
Star, Jessica Reedy. The song is
entitled Blue God. According to
Jessica Reedy the song was
written to express her thoughts
about her current place with God.
This song was chosen to serve a
two-fold purpose. The first
purpose that this song serves is to
depict that Jessica Reedy was
experiencing what St. John of the
Cross describes as, “the dark night
of the soul.” The second purpose
is because this song is relevant to
my current life space and my own
“dark night of the soul.”
11. Group Reflection
How Can We Experience a Spiritually Disciplined Life of Simplicity and Solitude?
Five Minute Challenge
Close your eyes, reflect on your day and play it scene by scene in your mind.
Now, take a deep breath and exhale. In the exhaling, silently, thank God for
your day and allow God to remove the weight of your day.
