Purpose Inform classmates about how to play softball and the advantages of playing it. The rules of softball, advantages of playing, and history After seeing this presentation the students will know what is going on when watching softball
Rules General Rules 3 strikes and you’re out 9 players Divided into infield and outfield Bases are 60’ apart and from a diamond when joined Any ball going outside the 1 st  or 3 rd  base is a foul ball 7 innings
Pitching and Batting Both of pitcher’s feet must be on the rubber and can only take one step forward while pitching Ball must be thrown underhand Both hands must be on ball at the start of the pitch Batters must remain in the same order Batter is out with 3 strikes, fly ball is caught, or the batter doesn’t stand in the batter’s box
Base Running Must touch bases in order Only overrun 1 st  base Can only lead off the base after the ball has left the pitchers hand Must tag up after fly ball is caught Can not pass base runner in front of you Runner is out if tagged with the ball before reaching a base, ball gets to 1 st  base before runner, or they run more than 3 feet out of the base line
Terms Ball- doesn’t enter the strike zone Grounder: a ball that is hit on the ground Force out- when the runner has to advance to the next base On deck- next batter Pop up- ball hit up in the air to the infield Strike- when a ball is swung at and missed or the ball enters the strike zone and is not swung at Strike zone- the ball passes the batter over the plate between their chest and knees
What can you gain from playing softball? Scholarships Playing softball is very healthy( studies show that women athletes who exercise regularly and boost their cardiovascular stamina can lessen their risk of heart attacks, strokes, back problems, osteoporosis, and other health issues. Playing also helps women mentally and emotionally. We have higher self-esteem, lower levels of depression, and higher grades. Student athletes tend to get better grades then students who do not participate in sports. Playing sports makes you understand the inner workings of business models. Girls who play sports also have a more positive body image and are healthier psychologically.
History Softball originated in Chicago on Thanksgiving day, 1887.  Started with a boxing glove and pole. Indoor softball became popular in Chicago Amateur Softball association was founded in 1933 In 1996 women’s softball hit its highest peak when it became an Olympic medal event The US Women’s team has won all 3 softball gold medals awarded in the sport Softball was dropped for the 2012 summer olympics
