3 Sugar Craving Killers You Need to Know
“Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food.” ― Hippocrates
Jenna, a mother of four, has struggled with a sweet tooth her whole life.
“When I was a kid, I’d have a bowl of cereal in the morning. It came in an attractive box with the cartoon character on front, and I’d eat it without a second thought.”
She had Oreos and Twinkies at school, but the apple and sandwich her mom made for her would go uneaten in her lunch box. Dinner of course, wouldn’t be complete without dessert, like a big helping of chocolate cake or apple pie.
“This went on for years and years. Although my parents always encouraged me to eat healthy, I’d always look for some form of sweets every time we ate.”
It wasn’t until Jenna had kids of her own when she finally realized how damaging sugar addiction is.
She went on: “I’d try to kick my dependence on it and fail every time, so I kind of gave up at some point in my adult life. But what really woke me up was seeing my own children go through the same problems I had at their age. They were gaining weight, had a hard time focusing on their school work, and they’d get lethargic after their sugar rush. Plus, it was wreaking havoc on their teeth too.”
So Jenna knew she needed an intervention not just for herself, but also for her family.
With the support of her husband and health professionals, Jenna managed to overcome her addiction to sugar. Not only that, she also spared her kids from growing up with an out-of-control sweet tooth.
“Our family doctor referred us to a nutritionist and a fitness coach. It’s only been a couple of months now, but I think that we’re on the right track,” she shared.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.
A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

3. INTRODUCTION
Water ,water everywhere, but who wants water to drink
when one can reach out for a carton of ‘softy’?
If you drink sodas- -especially if you drink a lot of them- what are you to make of all the headlines?
Do you dismiss them, as the beverage industry does, as bad science and media hype? or is it time
to put the can down and take a hard look at what you’re drinking?
Aerated or carbonated drinks are a fad among the modern youth who associate these drinks with
being ‘cool'. it would be prudent, though, to evaluate the features of these tempting beverages and
weigh the consequences of indulging in them.
4. CAFFEIN
E

6. Weight issues due to soft drinks
● A can of cola, for example, contains
around 140 calories, 7 teaspoons of
sugar but no nutrients. Swapping a
daily can for a glass of water will
save 51,100 calories in a year – or
enough to lose 14lb!
7. Premature birth of babies
● Presence of Caffeine:
Studies held by the American Pregnancy Association
reveal that when a pregnant female consumes over 300
mg of caffeine, it can lead to miscarriage.
● Zero Nutrition and Unhealthy Calories:
Soft drinks offer very little or no nutrition, which means
that they add no value to the well being of a pregnant
mother.
8. Effects on digestive and renal systems:
● Kidney dysfunction:
Whether on its own
or in the form of
glucose-fructose,
or as high-fructose
corn syrup, soft
drinks can
increase kidney
stone formation
and damage
kidney cells.
Stomach problems :
Irritable bowel syndrome,bloating.
The caffeine present can worsen
episodes of diarrhea.
9. Healthy alternatives to sodas?
A report claims that sugary drinks are
responsible for 8,000 new cases of
diabetes a year.
We all know that fizzy drinks are bad for our
health, but the latest research proves just
how terrible they are. News that sugary
sodas cause 8,000 diabetes cases each
year follows a government report last
week calling for consumers to minimize
their intake of squash and fizzy drinks.
Even sugar found in unsweetened fruit
juice should be counted as added sugar,
the report recommends.
10. 1. Pimped-up water
Fruity goodness: a few strawberries can liven up a glass of
water (ALAMY)
2. Iced teas
Cold herbal teas are refreshing
3. Diluted fruit juice 4. Vegetable juice
Green juice is better for you than fruit juices
13. DIET SODA- A BETTER ALTERNATIVE?
Pros and Cons of Diet Soda:
• It is a highly processed food, no nutritional value, highly acidic, contains
dye. But it has little to no calories.
• Diet soda contains Artificial sugar substitutes, they trigger insulin
and cause your body to go into fat storage mode.
• Artificial sugar substitutes may increase the risk of headaches, type
2 diabetes, joint inflammation, neurological problems, stroke, heart
disease, cancer and metabolic problems.
14. WHAT HAPPENS ONE HOUR AFTER DRINKING A CAN OF DIET SODA:

Tricks your taste buds & attacks your
teeth.
• 20 Minutes:
Can switch on fat storage mode.
• 40 Minutes:
Can cause addiction.
• 60 Minutes & Beyond:
Can deplete nutrients. Make you
hungry & thirsty for more.
15. Some benefits of soft drinks.
Carbonated water
• * Primary ingredient of soft drinks.
• * Many benefits for gastrointestinal tract.
• * Allevates constipation ,eases stomachaches.
• * Created by Joseph Priestly.
16. So what’s the bottomline then?
Say no to soft drinks and switch to healthier drinks. Be a
healthier you and feel great about your health. Instead of
dieting, practically you can achieve a lot by just giving up
soft drinks. So why diet? Just do your bit of exercise and
switch to healthy drinks.
Earlier in the year, scientists issued a warning over fizzy drinks, claiming that they cause a death toll
of 184,000 adults every year.
But this is not the first time they have been put under the spotlight. Full of sugar, chemicals and
(usually) with zero nutritional value, fizzy drinks are something that we have been warned against on
countless occasions, even if they do look appealing when the sun comes out.
And it's not just the 'full-fat' versions. Diet fizzy drinks can also have extremely harmful effects as
explained in the previous slides.
