1. SOCIAL EXPERIMENTS
Tools we’ve tried within the last six months.
GOOGLE HANGOUTS:
We’ve been experimenting with Google Hangouts on Air, which give us the ability to livestream
events and provides YouTube footage that we can use as is or edit into a polished video.
Readers can questions during live events through our blogging platform, Scribblelive. Here is a
Google Hangout we did on the red carpet with fashion experts, including Sun Media’s Marie-
Joelle Parent, following the Oscars.
Here’s how we repurposed the Hangout: http://www.torontosun.com/videos/2189136135001
Results: 2,300 pagviews (Suns, Canoe) for hangout
** Note: Google Hangouts has also been used by to train Sun Media staff
3. TIMETOAST: Timeline tool
What it it? Easy-to-use timeline tool that can be dropped into online stories. This tool is being
used by the national online desk and the Toronto Sun.
4. REBELMOUSE:
Social media ‘front page.’ Content curator. Automatically updates sites with tweets, Instagram
photos, etc., when programmed with specific users, hash-tags. We’re the first Canadian media
company, I believe, that’s used it on its site. Several U.S. news orgs have started using it as a
social front page. Only works on Canoe at the moment.
RESULTS: More than 1,400 page views on Canoe.
