Social Justice 12 – Course Content • Analysis of personal beliefs in relation to Social Justice theories • Past and present injustices, which can include: Violence Against Women, Poverty, Genocide, Racism, LGBTQ2 issues, Ableism, Globalization, Animal Rights, and Environmental Degradation • The connection between different social justice issues • Approaches individuals, groups, institutions, and governments can use to promote Social Justice • An individualized, meaningful response to a topic that students care about in an Action Project (major component of the course)

Law Studies - Course Content • Key areas of law, including criminal law, civil law, and family law • Foundations of Canadian law/Historical roots of law • Criminology - Why do people commit crime? • The role of federal and provincial courts • The Constitution and the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and Human Rights • The role of the courts in providing a check on the government’s power • The correctional system • Youth Justice

Economics – Course Content • Economic thought throughout the ages • Business cycles and markets • Recessions and financial crises • International trade: TPP and NAFTA • The sharing economy (bike shares, Airbnb, Car to Go, etc.) • The local economy: Vancouver Port *This is not a math course. Rather than calculating interest rates etc., students will learn about the social aspects of economics. This course is the economics course offered at Elgin that is accepted by Universities

- 20. Law/CLC • Learn about our legal system through case studies, debates, field trips and mock trials. You will also learn about the inner workings of our criminal justice system including policing, the trial process, youth justice, and sentencing/corrections. • There will also be an engaging exploration into the criminal mind and why people commit crime. • The course lends itself to looking not only at the justice system in Canada, but also the different roles people can play within it including the different career options within the justice system. We can investigate all the career options within the Justice system through guest speakers and court speaker sessions during field studies. • This course meets the requirements for both law12 and CLC12, including the completion of the required capstone project. • Other CLC components include: self-exploration, career and university research, post-graduation plans, volunteerism, personal branding, budgeting, health and wellness, scholarship applications, resumes and cover letters. • This choice would fill two blocks of your timetable and earn credits for Law 12 and CLC 12.

Physical Geography/CLC • This course combination will give the opportunity to see the characteristics of physical geography in their own backyard while gaining experience related to various occupations and post secondary programs that take our local and global geography into account. • It will allow for the discovery that geography is plate tectonics, rivers and oceans, sustainability, culture, city planning, globalization, climatology and much more. • By learning about how we can help the planet recover from generations of misuse through innovation, city planning, and/or behavioural change and by spending time outside on various field trips, students can build their connection to the planet and investigate how that can be channeled into a career. • This choice would fill two blocks of your timetable and earn credits for Geography 12, CLC 12

- 24. Humanities CO-OP • Humanities is suited for all students wishing to explore real world issues while gaining work experience and further discovering where their interests lie. Learn about our legal system through case studies, debates, field trips and mock trials.. You will also learn about the inner workings of our criminal justice system including policing, the trial process, youth justice, and sentencing/corrections. This course provides a foundation for many areas from trades and technical to social sciences, education, law, policing and more. • The Humanities Co-op allows students the flexibility in their school timetable to participate in work experience opportunities outside the school. During the semester of the Humanities Co-op students enrol in the following courses: • Language Arts 11 • Law 12 • Work Experience • Career Life Connections 12
