Seattle Continues to Wait for the Return of the SupersonicsCherin Perelman
Cherin Perelman previously provided accounting services for Seattle cultural events like Bumbershoot music festival and the Seattle Symphony, as well as the Seattle Supersonics basketball team. NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently announced the league has no plans to expand, mentioning Seattle though the city wants basketball back, expansion could dilute talent as some teams are unprofitable. Seattle had been prepared to acquire the Sacramento Kings but the team remained in California, and the NBA monitors the Milwaukee Bucks who must fund a new arena by 2017 or potentially relocate, though the commissioner says relocation is not a priority now.
Cherin Perelman worked as a certified public accountant for over a decade before becoming a casting director in New York City. While few formal educational requirements exist, aspiring casting directors can benefit from courses in theater, directing, and business management. However, gaining real world experience through internships and assistant positions with casting agencies and directors is arguably most effective. It requires working from the bottom up over time to gain experience, contacts, and a comprehensive understanding of matching actors to roles. Successful casting directors display curiosity, patience, and a desire to meet new people to properly assess an actor's fit for different opportunities.

Collaborative Digital Scholarship Projects: The Liberal Art of DrupalNITLE
Growing numbers of liberal arts colleges are creating collaborative digital scholarship projects. Defining the roles of faculty, student, and web developer in the semi-hierarchical world of liberal arts colleges—where pedagogical goals must be constantly kept in mind—can be tricky; however, doing so is critical to the long-term success of such projects. Drupal, an open source content management system, enters this space at a crucial moment, allowing a new level of collaboration in the creation and maintenance of sites by web developers, faculty content providers, and all student assistants. Getting the work flow right while keeping the experience rewarding for all concerned is one key to sustainability. In this seminar, members of the team behind the text annotation site Dickinson College Commentaries (faculty director, web developer, and students) discuss the problems, pitfalls, and opportunities of collaborating with Drupal in a liberal arts context.

Bill and Bob Davis—Davis Research
Starting all the way back in 1980 when my mom, Carol Davis, was one of the founding members of the chapter, it has always
been nice to see friendly faces at the chapter and national MRA events. Growing up in the industry and remembering all the
conferences over the past 30+ years, I have been particularly amazed at the technical changes we have seen (For those of you
who don't know me, I'm a geek at heart). I remember ripping out pages from the phone book so we could 'randomly' dial every 7th
number for phone studies and the day my dad Bill Davis Sr. rented computers for the first North/South MRA conference to dem-
onstrate this 'new' thing that we would all have in our offices one day (Carol was so afraid they would be stolen that she paid my
brother Bill to sleep in the room with the computers.)
As we all know a lot has changed since those days. We now have child labor laws that would have prohibited my mom from hav-
ing me tape quarters to surveys at age 4 and computers are indeed part of our everyday life. My day is ruined if I leave my phone
at home for the day (not mentioning that the phone is about 1,000,000x more powerful than those computers we rented). We
now collect surveys on the phone, on the web, and in person. Focus groups are held in person, in living rooms, and in chat
rooms. People can even instantly voice their opinion to the world, while on a plane at 30,000 feet travelling 400 miles per
hour. The only thing that hasn't changed is the quality and importance of the people driving that survey research. The SoCal
chapter of the MRA has always been a great place to exchange ideas, visit old friends, and make new ones.
It has been a pleasure to watch my mom, Carol Davis, serve the marketing research industry since 1970 and a pleasure to lead
Davis Research with my brother Bill over the past 12 years. Who knows what the future holds for our children, but I hope they
grow up as I did with warm memories of their parents working hard, having fun and making a difference. -Bob Davis

To further elevate the level and scope of MRA’s CEO Summit, we are shifting to a bi-annual schedule for this
extraordinary event.
MRA's CEO Summit is an exclusive event that provides an environment where leaders can share their in-
sights, experiences, and even their concerns in a setting of openness and trust.
The CEO Summit is for executives who want to be provoked, prodded and challenged. You will confront reality
and have significant opportunity to debate the issues. It is not an event for wallflowers.
It's time for you to clear your mind, distance yourself from the everyday worries, and dive into what you need to
do next for your company.
This high-level event is exclusively designed for C-level executives (CEOs, CFOs, COOs, business owners,
presidents, etc.) of marketing research companies. The event will challenge your thinking, expand your knowl-
edge and strengthen your business.

FTC Publishes Mobile App Guidelines- Submitted by LaToya Lang on September 6, 2012
The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has published guidelines for mobile application developers to facilitate best prac-
tices with truth-in-advertising and principles of privacy when marketing new mobile apps. The guideline is entitled,
“Marketing Your Mobile App: Get it Right from the Start”, and provides general principles for mobile app developers.
The principles covered the following guidelines:
• Be truthful about what the app is capable of doing: Once an app is distributed, a developer becomes an advertiser.
False claims in an advertisement can lead to additional liability—therefore, an advertisement must always tell the truth.
• Disclose Key Information Conspicuously: Disclosures must be clear and accurate;
• Consider Privacy Implications: Mobile app developers should limit information collection to a need-know-basis and if
the collection of certain information is not apparent, then user’s consent should be obtained;
• Provide and Offer Choices: Tools should be easy to find for users to make informed choices;
• Honor Privacy Promises: Honor practices and promises made regarding security practices;
• Protect Children’s Privacy: Mobile apps that are specifically designed for children may have additional requirements
under the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA);
• Only Collect Sensitive Information with Consent: The FTC stressed the importance of obtaining user consent before
collecting any sensitive data—such as, medical, financial or precise geolocation data; and
• Keep User Data Secure: The FTC references other obligations under the Gramm-Leach Bliley Act, the Fair Credit
Reporting Act, and the Federal Trade Commission Act as reminders of obligatory standards to maintain reasonable se-
curity practices.
