This document summarizes and compares the domestic worker social problems in Kuwait and the United States. In Kuwait, the Human Rights Watch is the main claims maker advocating for reform of the kafala sponsorship system which gives employers near total control over domestic workers. Their efforts have faced resistance from Kuwaiti society and government. In the US, domestic workers are framed under the issue of human trafficking. Groups advocate for stronger laws like the Trafficking Victims Protection Act, but public attention on the issue remains relatively low. Both countries are at the policy making stage of addressing these social problems.
