SME Chapter 248 Member Profile: Dan Tabish, President and General Manager of INLAND NORTHWEST METALLURGI-
CAL SERVICES. The company provides heat treating services to manufacturing companies throughout the Inland Pacific
Northwest area. The company utilizes a variety of heat treat furnaces, (SEE Above) the largest of which can handle
4000 lb. loads. Plant capabilities include: Endothermic atmosphere furnaces for carburizing, normalizing, or hardening.
Vacuum furnaces for bright hardening or solution treating of stainless steels and heat treating of tool steels. The com-
pany also maintains furnaces for tempering, stress relieving and aging. Dan (SEE Below—right) also oversees Inland’s
quality control laboratory with testing equipment for Rockwell hardness, Brinnell hardness, and Knoop microhardness
measurement.
SME Chapter 248’s Bi-Annual Heat Treating and Steel Alloy Selection Seminar was held at GONZAGA UNIVERSITY in Spokane, WA
courtesy of the Engineering Dept. with Dan Tabish as instructor. (SEE Below) The two evening course
was held on Tuesday and Thursday, February 10 and 12. Topics covered included:
• Steel Designations: (AISI, ASTM, AMS, Trade names)
for plain carbon steels, alloy steels, stainless steels, tool steels,
• Heat Treating Theory, Mechanical Properties and their Measurement
• Heat Treating Methods: furnace atmospheres, through-hardening,

Student Presentation Competi-
tion — April 15, 2009
This annual competition between
engineering students at Gonzaga
University and Eastern Washington
University will be held this year on
the Gonzaga campus. Students
are invited to submit technical
PowerPoint presentations for fac-
ulty review. Each school’s engi-
neering faculty qualifies three pres-
entations, and the three finalists
from each school compete for cash
awards. All of the competitors are
winners. One of the competitors
from the first competition leveraged
her participation so skillfully in her
resumé, that she was successful in
her application for a $25,000.00
graduate school scholarship.
Dan was instrumental in develop-
ing the program format and the
scoring system for the competition,
which judges on technical merit of
content and the quality of presenta-
tion and delivery. The judging is
performed by a panel of senior
SME members and awards are dis-
tributed at the end of the event.
