Smartphone is in vogue
in FranceIn 2013, there are as many
smartphone users as users of mobile
phones.*
Smartphone penetration rate is on the rise :
one person in two says that he or she will likely
buy a smartphone in the following months
rather than other connected items.*
*Deloitte’s study with online IPSOS questionnaire in which 2000 persons participated in June 2013.

New ways people hold
and touch
Human evolution is not so fast : users have still two
hands and ten fingers. Therefore, they have to shift the
way in which they are usually holding their phone.
Nowadays, smartphones and other mobile
devices are increasingly different : the screens
are larger and larger and people touch any part
of it to provide input with touchscreens.
Past years, only one study about how users hold their
smartphone was carried out. In 2013, Steven Hoober made
more than 1000 observations in american and canadian
airports and also in the streets. However, he did not gather
informations about users themselves such as their age, their
activity, if the person was left-handed or right-handed,…).
We go beyond observations !
Smartphone Street Observer – June 2014 @personae_ulab #streetObserver
 How do they really use their phone and what for
specifically ?
 How do they hold their smartphone and touch the
screen or buttons ?
 What are users doing ?
 What type of smartphone do they use ?
 What are personas ?

1,2,3,… on your
smartphone !
Take 15 seconds and wonder how do
you hold your smartphone when you are
writing texts.
Smartphone Street Observer – June 2014 @personae_ulab #streetObserver
It’s not that easy!
It’s difficult to think about one’s own gestures
when it has become an automatic reflex.
In situ observations are absolutely necessary
in order to understand real uses.
You must have taken your smartphone to simulate
texting or remember a past action with your
smartphone to answer.

For each of those ventured several criterias
(written in italic on the opposite graph), we
have ventured an hypothesis concerning its
impact on how the user interacts with his
smartphone.
The following results are only a part of
Personae User Lab’s study. The institute has
moved beyond « true and false » game : you
may discover in the complete version detailed
results, stories from the field and ergonomics

Hands used to hold the smartphone are also
used to touch the screen or buttons.
Among 35 years old and younger people, if one hand is used to hold the smartphone, this hand is also used to interact whereas
people older than 35 tend to use two hands to hold their smartphone but use only one hand to touch the screen or buttons.
