Learning a second language
Language immersion
• Total language immersion involves teaching a
language through other subjects.
• This helps place the language in context.
• However, the learner still needs to be able to
recognise and understand the basic
terminology of the subject.
• How do you explain these terms?
A cup
Explaining the cup
• On the previous slide you saw a cup.
• To explain the term you could point to the cup
and say the word ‘cup.’
• Are you describing the vessel, the contents, its
purpose, or the act of pointing?
• The type and level of explanation you need to
give will be dependent on the level of
language competence of the learners.
Understanding Pi
Solving the problem
• How do you meet all of your learners’
language needs within a single lesson?
• What type of resource would allow you to
concentrate on the subject matter while
supporting language learning?
Subject Specific Dictionaries
• A single age and subject specific resource with
supporting materials.
• Includes clear age appropriate definitions and
images to support learners at all stages of
their language learning journey.
• Headwords translated into Arabic to develop
independent use of the dictionaries and aid in
the smooth flow of the sessions.
