A literary analysis
carefully examines a
text, or one element of
a text, such as
character, setting, plot
or theme of a story.

Story Elements Defined
■ Setting- where and when the story takes place.
■ Characters- are the people in the story. Some
characters are more developed than others.
■ Plot-sequence of events in a story. The plot contains
a problem that the main character needs to solve.
Exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and
resolution are all parts of the plot.
■ Theme- an important message about life that the
author wants readers to understand. A story can have
more than one theme.

friendship. The text develops the theme that true friendship will always triumph over
competition.
Directions: Write/Type an essay that demonstrates how this theme is developed through
the character's words and actions. Use evidence from the text to support your
response.

match...against each other! In the short story, "Amigo Brothers" by Piri Thomas,

author develops this theme through the actions and dialogue of the characters.
