The Seljuks attacked and captured Baghdad from the Persians in 1055 AD. The Seljuks were a Turkic people who established both the Great Seljuk Empire and the Sultanate of Rum in the 11th century. Their capture of Baghdad established their control over the Abbasid Caliphate and marked the beginning of Turkic rule in Mesopotamia and Syria.
