The skin is composed of three main layers - the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue. The epidermis is the outermost layer and provides a waterproof barrier and protection from the environment. Below the epidermis lies the dermis, which contains tough connective tissue, hair follicles, and sweat and oil glands. The deepest layer is the subcutaneous tissue, known as the hypodermis, which attaches the skin to underlying muscle and bone structures and contains fat cells that help insulate the body.
