The skeletal system is made up of 206 bones and provides structure, protection, movement, and support for the body. It includes bones, joints, cartilage, tendons, and ligaments. While infants are born with over 270 bones, many fuse together as one grows. The skeletons of adult males and females differ slightly, with the female pelvis being flatter and more rounded to accommodate childbirth. Ligaments connect bones at joints while tendons connect muscles to bones to allow movement.
