The Minister of Health announced 6 new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in South Africa, bringing the total to 13. The new cases include 4 in Gauteng who had traveled to Italy, Germany, Austria and Italy; 1 in KwaZulu-Natal who had been to Portugal; and 1 in Western Cape who had been to Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey. All patients have been advised, with symptomatic patients receiving treatment and asymptomatic patients in self-quarantine. Contact tracing has begun for all cases. Over 3,600 tests for the virus have been conducted so far in South Africa.

The Monetary Policy Committee of the South African Reserve Bank increased the repurchase rate by 25 basis points to 3.75% in response to rising inflation risks. While South Africa's economy grew strongly in the first half of 2021, growth is expected to slow in the second half due to the July unrest and other factors. Inflation forecasts for 2021 and 2022 were revised upwards due to higher fuel, food and electricity prices. The risks to the inflation outlook are assessed as upside, though inflation is expected to remain close to the mid-point target over the medium term. Policy decisions will continue to be data-dependent and sensitive to risks in the uncertain economic environment.

There is increasing confidence that cell therapies will soon play a role in the treatment of autoimmune disorders, but the extent of this impact remains to be seen. Early readouts on autologous CAR-Ts in lupus are encouraging, but manufacturing and cost limitations are likely to restrict access to highly refractory patients. Allogeneic CAR-Ts have the potential to broaden access to earlier lines of treatment due to their inherent cost benefits, however they will need to demonstrate comparable or improved efficacy to established modalities.
In addition to infrastructure and capacity constraints, CAR-Ts face a very different risk-benefit dynamic in autoimmune compared to oncology, highlighting the need for tolerable therapies with low adverse event risk. CAR-NK and Treg-based therapies are also being developed in certain autoimmune disorders and may demonstrate favorable safety profiles. Several novel non-cell therapies such as bispecific antibodies, nanobodies, and RNAi drugs, may also offer future alternative competitive solutions with variable value propositions.
Widespread adoption of cell therapies will not only require strong efficacy and safety data, but also adapted pricing and access strategies. At oncology-based price points, CAR-Ts are unlikely to achieve broad market access in autoimmune disorders, with eligible patient populations that are potentially orders of magnitude greater than the number of currently addressable cancer patients. Developers have made strides towards reducing cell therapy COGS while improving manufacturing efficiency, but payors will inevitably restrict access until more sustainable pricing is achieved.
Despite these headwinds, industry leaders and investors remain confident that cell therapies are poised to address significant unmet need in patients suffering from autoimmune disorders. However, the extent of this impact on the treatment landscape remains to be seen, as the industry rapidly approaches an inflection point.

This takes the total number of coronavirus positive patients in South Africa to 13. Gauteng Cases: 4 A 33 year old female who had travelled to Italy and returned on the 1st of March 2020. A couple, 34 year old male and a 33 year old female who had travelled to Germany. They returned to South Africa on the 9th of March 2020. A 57 year old male who had travelled to Austria and Italy. He returned to South Africa on the 9th of March 2020.
- 2. KwaZulu-Natal Case: 1 A 40 year old male who had travelled to Portugal. He returned on the 7th of March 2020. Western Cape Case: 1 A 36 year old male who had travelled to multiple countries including Germany, Austria, Switzerland and Turkey. He returned to South Africa on the 9th of March 2020 All the patients have now been advised. Those who are symptomatic have started receiving treatment. Some of these patients are already in hospital while some, specifically those who are asymptomatic are in self quarantine. Contact tracing has also started for all these cases. It is also noteworthy that to date, 3642 tests have been conducted. More information relating to these case will be communicated.
