In this talk I will present the fundamentals of Eclipse Sirius : its objectives and principles, illustrated with examples of usage in several different domains. We will also see how Sirius integrates with other modeling components to provide a complete stack for creating advanced modeling workbenches. We will end with a presentation of lastest new features and an overview of the current roadmap. speaker : Pierre-Charles is the Product Lead on Eclipse Sirius and the maintainer for GMF Runtime and EMF Services, two Eclipse projects Sirius relies on. He holds a PhD in Software Engineering from University of Nantes.

In this session, we shall present our model visualizations based on Sirius framework used in multicore automotive software production tools at Bosch. We will provide insights into the decision criteria and benefits achieved with Sirius. Developing Modeling Tool for RM-ODP with Eclipse Sirius
Defining architecture of your system, existing or to be built, is an important practice to communicate, maintain and extend the system in future. The Reference Model of Open Distributed Processing (RM-ODP) is a set of international standards that can be used for this purpose.
Existing tools to specify RM-ODP based system architectures include UML tools with ODP plugin, since one of the standards defines UML Profile for it. The presenter received an email regarding a more accessible and standalone ODP tool, which eventually initiated this project. It is a work in progress, Eclipse/Sirius-based tool. An overview of the tool and an experience of the development done so far will be presented.

[SriusCon 2020] Sirius to the Web with Obeo Cloud Platform
Obeo Cloud Platform (OCP) is the Cloud-based solution developed by Obeo for deploying modeling tools on the web.
With OCP, modeling tools developed with Sirius can be installed on a Cloud server and are rendered in a web browser.
OCP Modeler is not just a revamping of Sirius in the web! Relying on a modern technical stack, it implements a new UX design to offer an experience adapted to web usages.
We will present the architecture of the solution and how it positions with Sirius. Then we will show a demo of this modeling environment capabilities and give an overview of the roadmap.

Safety Architect is a Model-Based Safety Analysis (MBSA) tool which automates the creation of safety artefacts required to carry out safety analysis such as: FMEA tables or fault trees. Safety Architect proposes a graphical editor to safety engineers allowing them to manipulate safety concepts in a more comfortable way than with tabular sheets. On the other hand, Safety Architect also ensures consistency between system design and safety analysis by interfacing with Model-Based System Engineering (MBSE) tools such as Capella. [ Capella Day 2019 ] Feedback on deployment of Capella at RATP
The RATP group is modernizing Paris' public transportation network, which includes managing complex integration projects across metro, tram, and rail systems. They deployed CAPELLA to help optimize their systems engineering approach and manage this complexity. RATP took a cautious approach, prioritizing high-value uses of CAPELLA to minimize risks. They have found benefits like improved sharing of concepts, design structure and clarity, reuse across projects, and time savings. RATP is working to qualify more CAPELLA uses and share lessons learned.

The new space economy asks for an overall improvement of systems engineering practices due to aggressive development time and complex systems design, implementation and operation by a number of players who grow with mission complexity. The talk proposes a critical analysis of a Model-Based Systems Engineering approach using ARCADIA and the Capella tool, applied to real CubeSat mission, with the aim of showing potentials and lacks.
Firstly, the way requirements are managed and traced using the Requirements Viewpoint is presented, highlighting the necessity of having a dedicated diagram for the trees generation; a solution to that is proposed in order to easily trace backwards requirements whenever needed. Following the ARCADIA method, the approach begins with the high-level objectives definition through the Operational Analysis, moving to a first internal functional analysis exploiting the second level of Capella, the System Analysis. The Logical Architecture is then developed introducing the concept of subsystem, leading to big decisions which will drive the successive Physical Architecture. The latter opens the road to all CubeSat components modeling using the concept of Node Physical Component, together with physical interfaces definition. Great use of all Capella concepts is done, such as Functional Chains, Control Functions, Replicas, Basic Mass and Price Viewpoints etc.
As the approach has been applied to a real space project, Phases and Modes have also been modeled exploiting respectively Scenario Diagrams, also used to define mission Concept of Operations, and State Machine Diagrams. Some thoughts oriented toward an improvement of the Modes management will be discussed. Lastly, ARCADIA and Capella do not provide a proper way of dealing with Assembly, Integration, Verification and Testing activities within the same architectural model, therefore an innovative approach is proposed and discussed to include such aspects in the model.

SysML v2 - What's the big deal, anyway?
SysML v2 is an upcoming version of the Systems Modeling Language that aims to address limitations in the current version (v1). It has a formal foundation using KerML, a new metamodel that is not limited by being a UML profile, and a textual notation to integrate with existing technologies. A standardized API will also allow SysML tooling to better interoperate. The goal of these changes is to enable effective model-based systems engineering by putting system models with real meaning and semantics at the center.
SysML v2 and the Next Generation of Modeling Languages
The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a particularly successful offshoot of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) tailored for Model-Based Systems Engineering. After a decade of growing use of SysML, in 2017 the Object Management Group (OMG) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a new version of the language. A year into the ongoing work to respond to this RFP, it is clear that SysML v2 needs to be more than just an expansion of the functional capabilities of SysML. Rather, it must address fundamental architectural issues that have made it difficult to further evolve SysML v1 to address the needs of its user community. Therefore, the language is being re-designed using a new kernel metamodel with formally grounded semantics. This kernel can then be extended using semantic model libraries, rather than by expanding the language metamodel itself. This approach will allow SysML v2 to be not only the modeling language for traditional systems engineering, but also the foundation for a whole new generation of modeling languages.

With the advent of its Web version, numerous new use-cases are going to emerge. The game changer is the possibility to define a new DSL and its graphical syntax directly in the Cloud, and the ease to give access to rich studios to end-users directly from their web browser.
In this talk we will show which concrete use-cases are already enabled by the current version and how they can be deployed on operational projects with Obeo Cloud Platform, the product that extends Sirius Web with additional collaborative and access control features.
If you are new to Eclipse Modeling, or to Cloud technologies (or both), we will also present how we can accompany you on your projects, at your own pace, from a proof-of-concept up to an industrial deployment.
The state of Sirius, where we are and where we are going
In 2020 we announced the creation of Sirius Web, the cloud-based version of Sirius Desktop. This new project has kept the initial spirit of Sirius - easy creation of custom graphical modeling tools - on a modern technical stack facilitating the deployment to end-users.
In this talk, we will come back to the principles that made the success of Sirius in multiple and various specific domains, and how Obeo supports the worldwide community of adopters in its discovery of the technology, the inception of tailored modeling workbenches and their deployment on operational projects.

Today a number of EU railway operators are on a journey to define what the future of railway operations should look like. In Germany, DB AG works within the sector initiative Digitale Schiene Deutschland. The new space economy asks for an overall improvement of systems engineering practices due to aggressive development time and complex systems design, implementation and operation by a number of players who grow with mission complexity. The talk proposes a critical analysis of a Model-Based Systems Engineering approach using ARCADIA and the Capella tool, applied to real CubeSat mission, with the aim of showing potentials and lacks.
Firstly, the way requirements are managed and traced using the Requirements Viewpoint is presented, highlighting the necessity of having a dedicated diagram for the trees generation; a solution to that is proposed in order to easily trace backwards requirements whenever needed. Following the ARCADIA method, the approach begins with the high-level objectives definition through the Operational Analysis, moving to a first internal functional analysis exploiting the second level of Capella, the System Analysis. The Logical Architecture is then developed introducing the concept of subsystem, leading to big decisions which will drive the successive Physical Architecture. The latter opens the road to all CubeSat components modeling using the concept of Node Physical Component, together with physical interfaces definition. Great use of all Capella concepts is done, such as Functional Chains, Control Functions, Replicas, Basic Mass and Price Viewpoints etc.
As the approach has been applied to a real space project, Phases and Modes have also been modeled exploiting respectively Scenario Diagrams, also used to define mission Concept of Operations, and State Machine Diagrams. Some thoughts oriented toward an improvement of the Modes management will be discussed. Lastly, ARCADIA and Capella do not provide a proper way of dealing with Assembly, Integration, Verification and Testing activities within the same architectural model, therefore an innovative approach is proposed and discussed to include such aspects in the model.

SysML v2 - What's the big deal, anyway?
SysML v2 is an upcoming version of the Systems Modeling Language that aims to address limitations in the current version (v1). It has a formal foundation using KerML, a new metamodel that is not limited by being a UML profile, and a textual notation to integrate with existing technologies. A standardized API will also allow SysML tooling to better interoperate. The goal of these changes is to enable effective model-based systems engineering by putting system models with real meaning and semantics at the center.
SysML v2 and the Next Generation of Modeling Languages
The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a particularly successful offshoot of the Unified Modeling Language (UML) tailored for Model-Based Systems Engineering. After a decade of growing use of SysML, in 2017 the Object Management Group (OMG) issued a Request for Proposals (RFP) for a new version of the language. A year into the ongoing work to respond to this RFP, it is clear that SysML v2 needs to be more than just an expansion of the functional capabilities of SysML. Rather, it must address fundamental architectural issues that have made it difficult to further evolve SysML v1 to address the needs of its user community. Therefore, the language is being re-designed using a new kernel metamodel with formally grounded semantics. This kernel can then be extended using semantic model libraries, rather than by expanding the language metamodel itself. This approach will allow SysML v2 to be not only the modeling language for traditional systems engineering, but also the foundation for a whole new generation of modeling languages.

EclipseCon Fr 2018 - Modeling tools go up to the cloud…
In this talk we will present our plan to move Eclipse Sirius to the web and the cloud. At Obeo, we have been working on modeling tools in general, and on Sirius in particular, for a long time now. Until now, Sirius has relied exclusively on the Eclipse Platform, and consequently the graphical modelers based on it are desktop applications. Today we are ready to work with you to bring graphical modeling tools up to the cloud.
What would be the advantages of a cloud based modeling tool? What changes this require in the architecture of the Sirius’ project? And what you can expect in the next version?
We will demonstrate the different levels of integration we currently have, in particular how we leverage projects like Sprotty, ELK, Theia and Che to move diagrams into the browser.
We will also present the Graphical Server Protocol initiative, which will define a platform-agnostic protocol between a diagram editor in the browser and a graphical server that manages the corresponding models in the cloud.

Graphical DSL with Sirius: how to simplify the creation of custom modeling tools
This document discusses how to use Sirius to create custom modeling workbenches. Sirius allows tool specifiers to easily create modeling tools tailored to their domain vocabulary and processes. It provides a specification environment for defining metamodels and graphical editors, and a runtime environment for end users. Sirius reduces the cost and complexity of developing modeling tools and allows tools to be created in just a few hours. State of GeoServer - FOSS4G 2016

[SiriusCon 2018] A Bird's Eye View on Eclipse Sirius
Eclipse Sirius is an open source modeling tool that allows users to easily create custom modeling workbenches. It provides a common API that integrates modeling representations and structured data. This allows tool developers to create modeling tools tailored for specific domains and end users' processes using concepts like diagrams, matrices and tables. Sirius also provides features like synchronized editors and validation rules to deal with complex modeling problems. The presentation discusses using Sirius to build the Mindstorms designer tool as a tutorial example and announces upcoming webinars on integrating Xtext editors and visual differencing capabilities into Sirius.
State of GeoServer 2.10
- GeoServer is an open source Java web application for sharing geospatial data. It publishes data from any major spatial data source using open standards like WMS, WFS, WCS, and WPS.
- The GeoServer team has 13 releases in 2016 with a focus on maintenance and technical debt. New features include improved raster data support, styling enhancements, and configuration changes.
- Looking ahead, focus areas include vector data improvements, raster optimizations, maintenance, and improving support for newer Java versions and standards.
Visual studio 2019 launch
Visual Studio 2019 includes new features like Live Share for real-time collaboration, IntelliCode for AI-assisted coding, and improvements to debugging and tooling. It also improved support for .NET development, including new code fixes and refactoring options. Visual Studio 2019 supports development for Azure, Azure DevOps, GitHub, containers, and microservices. New capabilities were also added for mobile development with Xamarin, Python, and machine learning using ML.NET.

Obeo Cloud Platform (OCP) is the Cloud-based solution developed by Obeo for deploying modeling tools on the web.

State of GeoServer provides an update on our community and reviews the new and noteworthy features for the Project. The community keeps an aggressive six month release cycle with GeoServer 2.11 and 2.12 being released this year. Each releases bring together exciting new features. This year a lot of work has been done on startup times, large catalogs, REST configuration upgrades, styling languages, styling interface, security,just to name a few. We will also take a look at community research into satellite imagery search and delivery, multi-resolution raster support and more. Attend this talk for a cheerful update on what is happening with this popular OSGeo project. describe our general strategy for moving Sirius to the web while not breaking the existing modelers;

Cassidian is working on an Integrated Project Support Environment named IPSE to provide a suite of collaborative system engineering tools integrated using Sodius' MDWorkbench platform.

The document discusses a collaboration between SODIUS and CASSIDIAN (EADS Defence & Security) to develop model-driven architecture solutions for supporting systems engineering. It describes a project to enable interchange of data between modeling tools used at CASSIDIAN. The proposed solution uses the NATO Architecture Framework metamodel as a pivot format, with UML diagrams to represent views. Connectors are used to import/export data from tools to the neutral format. A sample migration of models from one tool to another took one week and had mostly complete translation of diagrams and data.

Digitally assisted design for safety analysis

Biography: Stephane Lacrampe
Stephane Lacrampe co-founded Obeo in 2005 in France and acted as the company's CEO until 2018. Obeo is an independent software vendor with a global reach, leading in open-source modeling software for system and software engineers, enterprise architects, and domain modeling experts. He is now the director of Obeo Canada. He is a very active member of the Capella community and is in charge of developing the Capella ecosystem in North and South America. He is a regular MBSE speaker who speaks at conferences in America and beyond. Stephane LACRAMPE is co-chair of the INCOSE Systems Engineering Tools Database Working Group and the INCOSE Canada chapter webmaster.
Tailoring Arcadia Framework in Thales UK
Architecture frameworks provide an approach to describing systems and the presentation of these elements and relationships to deliver the stakeholder needs. Essentially, frameworks provide templates for our engineering artefacts.
The design of a framework must accommodate a level of freedom in its usage; specific enough to answer the majority of stakeholder concerns whilst generic enough to allow for differences between projects. This balancing act often results in framework design being more generic to allow for a wider audience. Having an untailored framework, which is more ‘open’, can lead to creating inconsistent viewpoints.
Arcadia is one such framework as implemented through the Capella tool. The framework provides 4 perspectives/levels for product definition:
- The Operational Analysis, where the user needs are considered. Note: no concept of the System at this level.
- The System Analysis, where we define the contribution and scope of the System as a ‘black box’, identifying external interfaces, and top-level system functions.
- The Logical Architecture, where we break the System down into logical ‘blocks’ and decompose the functionality.
- The Physical Architecture, in which we define a (candidate) physical architecture, further decompose the functions, and deploy this functionality to the physical sub-systems, hardware, software and/or firmware.
In this talk, we acknowledge the strengths of the Arcadia framework, and the benefits it brings, whilst considering the need to tailor the generic viewpoints. We will provide examples of how we have adopted the generic Arcadia framework and further specified some of the viewpoints to meet the needs of our stakeholders. We will discuss future work looking at how we can translate these specialisations across other areas of the model. Finally, we will provide some suggestions and advice on tailoring views to meet your own needs and ensuring stakeholder engagement with the model.

Generation of Interface Control Documents (ICDs) using a model-based method has a number of advantages over text-based approaches. This paper describes the Python-based software that was written to automatically generate different versions of an ICD from a structure model in Capella. One use case for this approach is checking parts changes captured in the Engineering Bill of Materials (EBOM) using a PLM tool. We demonstrate an automated workflow that links changes in the EBOM to a request to vet the change against the ICD. This presentation will discuss our rationale, approach, results, and lessons learned.

Systems engineering is an iterative approach traditionally applied one-way, from the definition of the user needs to the implementation of a solution that satisfies certain requirements and is constrained by cost and schedule. This presentation instead aims at exploring the educational benefits of applying the opposite practice, thus retrieving system and subsystem level requirements based on a solution already implemented and taking advantage of the MBSE possibilities to realize a model of the system according to the ARCADIA method and systems engineering approach, using the Capella MBSE Tool. This reverse-engineering process has been applied to a renowned Space mission, the ESA Mars Express satellite, whose goal is to investigate all aspects of the martian environment, including the subsurface, surface and atmosphere of the planet, in order to search for evidence of extinct or extant life. The uppermost goal of this project is to demonstrate the benefits for university students at a Master's level keen on systems engineering in implementing the Capella tool to retrieve the system architecture and the operational processes in a "reversed" strategy. In this work, students have been compelled to apply systems engineering processes to justify the design choices and exploit the already well-known missions and capabilities to build the architecture and functional chains as a starting point for the reverse engineering of the identified subsystems. The results prove it is possible, and also recommendable time-wise, to teach Space engineering and Systems engineering students by using this inverse approach, rather than the canonic one in which students have to design a whole mission from scratch.

Development of high-tech systems is a complex task done by diverse specialists distributed across the globe. Reference architectures including a clear functional breakdowns can support them and support their decisions. This presentation proposes an approach to improve the development of advanced electron microscopes by using Capella as an authoritative source of information. To support design decisions, a Capella AddOn has been developed to obtain quantitative information, such as throughput numbers, for a particular workflow. First, we will illustrate how functional and system decompositions can be captured and serve as company-wide architecting assets to inform design decisions. Next, we will outline how simulating Capella models can bring valuable insights to modelers. During a demo, we’ll simulate Capella’s Functional chains using the open-source simulation tool POOSL (https://github.com/eclipse/poosl) , and visualize results using the freely available TRACE4CPS tool (https://www.eclipse.org/trace4cps/). Re-using functions from the reference architecture allows us reason about design aspects such as the relation between throughput and design choices about function allocation and parallelism.

Mind Game: You want to build a LEGO Mindstorms Factory for Toy Cars and you are Head of Factory Planning. You identify that your manufacturing planning team and your product design team don’t collaborate with each other, because they work in silos and speak different languages. Their progress is too slow and the results are not synchronized.
Imagine: You succeed in merging your experts into one interdisciplinary team where everyone is collaboratively working together – already in the early stages of the engineering cycle. And imagine they start to speak the same language. Doubtless, you would speed up your engineering process. Furthermore, you would also reach a synchronized global solution for your manufacturing system and to be produced toy cars, building bridges inside your organization.
But how? This has been introduced by Dr.-Ing. C. Sinnwell in February 2020 in her PhD-thesis. There, she published the latest version of a methodology referred to as “MBPE – Model-Based Production Engineering”. The MBPE-methodology is a new approach for the conceptual design of manufacturing systems based on early product information supported by MBSE using UML.
The presentation will spotlight the MBPE-methodology, explaining how to use MBSE in the context of interdisciplinary factory and manufacturing planning. Also, it will be shown, how the methodology could be adapted to be realized with Eclipse Capella instead of any UML-modeling tool, illustrated by an example on how to conceptualize and model a LEGO Mindstorms production line for Toy Cars.

Simulation with Python and MATLAB® in Capella
A common need in system architecture design is to verify that if the architect is correct and can satisfy its requirements.
Execution of system architect model means to interact with state machines to test system’s control logic. It can verify if the logical sequences of functions and interfaces in different scenarios are desired.
However, only sequence itself is not enough to verify its consequence or output. So we need each function to do what it is supposed to do during model execution to verify its output, and that is what we called “simulation”.
This presentation introduced how to embed Python or MATLAB® codes inside functions to do “simulation” within Capella.

Visualizing, Analyzing and Optimizing Automotive Architecture Models using Sirius
Advancing digitalization affects almost all aspects of our modern world. A prominent example is that of modern automobiles. From primarily mechanical machines, cars have evolved into driving complex cyber-physical systems over the last decades. Optimizing such systems consisting of vast networks of sensors, actuators, control units, and communication systems is a huge challenge for today's automotive industry and requires standardized and integrated toolchains fit for purpose. Together with a prestigious automotive industry partner, the Technical University of Ilmenau developed an application together with an integrated toolchain for evaluating and optimizing automotive architecture models. This application is based on the Obeo Sirius project as well as the Eclipse Modeling Framework. Based on Sirius, we created a model editor which is used for visualizing, editing, but also analyzing and optimizing automotive models across the boundaries of different architectural layers.

How do you combine the OpenUI5/SAPUI5 programming model with a design system that makes its controls available as Web Components? Since OpenUI5/SAPUI5 1.120, the framework supports the integration of any Web Components. This makes it possible, for example, to natively embed own Web Components of your design system which are created with Stencil. The integration embeds the Web Components in a way that they can be used naturally in XMLViews, like with standard UI5 controls, and can be bound with data binding. Learn how you can also make use of the Web Components base class in OpenUI5/SAPUI5 to also integrate your Web Components and get inspired by the solution to generate a custom UI5 library providing the Web Components control wrappers for the native ones.

Graspan: A Big Data System for Big Code Analysis
We built a disk-based parallel graph system, Graspan, that uses a novel edge-pair centric computation model to compute dynamic transitive closures on very large program graphs.
We implement context-sensitive pointer/alias and dataflow analyses on Graspan. An evaluation of these analyses on large codebases such as Linux shows that their Graspan implementations scale to millions of lines of code and are much simpler than their original implementations.
These analyses were used to augment the existing checkers; these augmented checkers found 132 new NULL pointer bugs and 1308 unnecessary NULL tests in Linux 4.4.0-rc5, PostgreSQL 8.3.9, and Apache httpd 2.2.18.
