Sinterklaas, the patron saint of the Netherlands, arrives by steamboat from Spain each year with his helpers known as Zwarte Piet. According to a 17th century painting, Sinterklaas rewards good children with presents but a naughty boy is crying as his older sister shows his empty shoe. Typical Sinterklaas candy includes chocolate letters and gingerbread-like cookies called kruidnoten or pepernoten.
