Sink or Float Unit
                      Pre-K class (4 years old,12 students)
Objectives: Observe and classify objects that float or sink and then classify
objects according to whether they sink or float.

Life Skills: Observing. This lesson will also provide practice categorizing a
variety of objects according to observable characteristics (heavy/light;
big/small).

Vocabulary: sink, float, weight, shape, prediction, observation, experiment

Instructions:
    1. Ask children to brainstorm on what it means:
       - ‘to sink’, what sinks, why does it sink?
       - ‘to float’, what floats, why does it float?

   2. Conduct a short predictions survey and record answers on the prediction
      part of the sheet:
3. Read the book Who sunk the boat by Pamella Allen. (youtube video for
     FSU class, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsYb1YSYR34). Ask the
children their thoughts of why the boat sunk.

[Optional, for older kids: explain to children about density, weight, and
shape/size. Ask the same questions from point 2 again, record the
answers and see if they changed. ]

  4. Conduct an experiment:
     Materials needed:
Several small tubs filled with water (as needed), apple, balloon, banana,
plastic spoon, sponge, coins and a record sheet for each science team (4
     teams, 3 kids in each)
     Procedure:
Each group has a record sheet and a tub of water. Each group receives
each item one at the time (a balloon, apple, banana, plastic spoon,
     sponge, and coins.)
The students will make predictions of which items that they think will
sink and which items that they think will float. Students in the groups
will take turns dropping each object into their container of water. (Ask
     them to observe what happens.)
They tell the results to the rest of the class, and each team marks it on
the record sheet. After each group has finished testing their objects
discuss the results using the following questions:
     - How many of your predictions were correct?
     - Look at the objects that sunk. Describe them. Do they have anything
         in common with one another?
     - Look at the objects that floated. Describe them. Do they have
anything in common with one another?

   5. Additional Resources:
         • We play BBC Online Game:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/schools/digger/5_7entry/8.shtml
         • Watch PBSKids video from Youtube:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I_zuugpWW14&feature=related
Evaluation:
Each student will receive a worksheet with pictures of each of the experiment
items. They have to cut and paste them correctly on individual science posters
labeled "Sink or Float". They have to come up with one additional example for
each category (something that wasn’t mentioned in the class).
The kindergarteners will also be tested on sorting a group of objects and telling
me how they chose to sort them. Examples are by: size, shape, weight, color,
if it sinks or floats. They will be required to make sentences with the new
vocabulary.
