3. Consideration in SCD therapy:
• Presence and absence of natural teeth and
dentition in the opposite arch
• Necessities of FDP and removable prosthesis
• Existing complete denture
• Money factors in case of advance treatment option
like implants
• Time factors
• Physical health
4. Objective
• Achieving harmonious occlusal plane is a primary
objective of any restorative procedure to facilitate
natural mandibular movements and ease of
mastication
• Establishment of normal occlusal plane in opposite
arch is pre-requisite to maintain the stability of the
SCD
5. Single complete denture related
Problems/SYNDROME
Lack of occlusal balance cause
Instability/loose denture
Mucosal inflammation
Soreness
Bone resorption (Ridge)
Patient’s dissatisfaction
6. Types
• Maxillary SCD in oppose to Mandibular natural
tooth
• Mandibular SCD in oppose to maxillary natural
teeth
• SCD in oppose to existing complete denture
• SCD opposite to FDP
7. Method
• Mouth preparation and restoration
• Impressions,occlusal rims
• Maxillo-mandibular relationship record in
conventional manner
• Articulation
• Teeth selection/arrangement
• Processing and occlusal refining
• Insertion of denture
8. Mouth preparation and restoration
for tilting and drifted teeth
• The tools or techniques namely Broderick
occlusal plane analyzer and the occusal plane
template(OPT) have satisfactorily been used in
clinical practice to restore such clinical
situations
• Transparent occlusal plane template (OPT)
made of vacuum formed polymer material can
be used
11. Consequences of SCD against the
natural teeth
• Artificial tooth wear
• Fracture of denture
• Instability of denture
• Combination syndrome –bone loss in ant maxilla
The combination syndrome is a dental condition
that is commonly seen in patients with completely
edentulous maxilla and partially edentulous
mandible with preserved anterior teeth
14. To minimise the consequences
1. Tooth wear --In case of FDP having porcelain
occluding surface Select teeth with
Resin teeth/Porcelain teeth
15. Selection of acrylic and porcelain teeth
Acrylic Porcelain
• Minimal wear to natural teeth Maximum wear
• Easy for selective grinding Difficult to grind
• Minimal fracture to natural teeth More fracture
• Loss of VD more Less
• Post teeth with Gold coping or resin teeth
• Amalgam restoration on artificial teeth
17. 3.Denture fracture
• Use High impact denture
• Denture processing with Injection molding
• Use of Mesh and metallic denture base
18. Virtual articulators
The virtual articulator is intended to use as a tool for the analysis of the
complex static and dynamic occlusal relations.
Three different virtual articulator have been made till now-
1)Szentpetery’s virtual articulator: It was introduced by Szentpetery in
1999.
2) Virtual articulator of Kordass and Gartner: It was introduced by
Kordass and Gartner in 2003,
19. 3.Virtual articulator based on mechanical dental articulator was
introduced by graphic design and engineering project
developments, the University of the Basque Country in 2009.
