In 1985 Dublin, Ireland, Robert moves his youngest son Conor to a new school due to financial problems. Conor struggles to fit in at first but eventually joins a band started by his friend Darren. The band begins writing and recording their own songs, gaining popularity. Conor also begins a relationship with the beautiful Raphina. However, when Raphina reveals she was planning to leave for London without telling Conor, they break up. At an end of year performance, the band plays a song mocking their strict principal. Raphina reconciles with Conor and they decide to sail together to London, hoping to escape their small town lives and pursue their dreams.

The school principal Br.Baxter(Don Wycherley),takeshimtotaskfor thisdespite Conor’spleas of
beingunable toaffordnewblackshoes,eventuallyforcinghimtocompletethe dayshoeless.The
shoe problemisresolvedbypaintingthe shoesblackusingpaintfromthe artroom.An encounter
withthe school bully,Barry(IanKenny) introducesConortoDarren(BenCarolan),anallyand
buddingentrepreneur.WhenConortellsthe beautiful aspiringmodel,Raphina(LucyBoynton),in
orderto impressher,thathe needsamodel fora musicvideohisbandismaking,Darrenagreesto
manage the band andintroduceshimtomulti-instrumentalistEamon(MarkMcKenna)
The band practise inEamon's livingroom, playingabunchof 1980s covers.Conorhoweverhasa
sibling-inducedepiphanywhenBrendanencourageshimtodropthe coversanddevelopthe band's
ownstyle. He beginswritingoriginal songswithEamon.The bandfilmtheirfirstmusicvideofortheir
song"The Riddle of the Model",wearingamotleyassortmentof oftencomical costumes,with
Raphinaactingas ingenue andmakeupartist.Conorgoesintoschool the nextdaywearingmake-up,
he gets calledintoBaxter'soffice andtoldtoremove the makeup.Conorrefusesandashe walks
away Baxtergrabshimforcinghimintothe bathroomandforciblyremovingthe make upbypushing
hisface into a sink.RaphinagivesConorhisnickname "Cosmo",whichshe saysismore inkeeping
withhisnewband'simage and the bandcontinuestowrite andrecord new songs.Afterspending
the day filmingamusicvideofora newsong,Conorand Raphinakissandexchange confidences.
Conoralso managestostand up toBarry bypointingoutthe insignificance of hislifeaswell ashis
own,whichgreatlyupsetsBarry.
At home RobertandPenny(MariaDoyle Kennedy)'smarriage isfallingapart,while Raphinaand
Conor'srelationshipblossoms.ConortakesRaphinaouttoDalkeyIslandinhisgranddad'smotor

Later, she revealsthatshe wassetto leave forLondonwithherboyfriendthatday,buthe
abandonedher.Deeplyhurtbyherlackof disclosure andbecomingevenmore offendedbyher
nonchalance,ConorbreaksupwithRaphina.Because of the break-up,alongwithhisfamily's
problems,Conorfindsdifficultyinwritingorplayingmusic,butBrendanurgesConortocarry onso

2. An opportunityarisesforthe bandtoplaylive atan endof yearparty at school.Conormanagesto
strike a friendshipwithBarry,offeringhimthe chance to be the band'sroadie and escape the
physicallyandemotionallyabusive relationshiphe haswithhisalcoholicfather,whichhe accepts.
Conorpreparesa newsong,"BrownShoes",mockingBaxter,whichthe bandperformasan encore
while distributinghomemade masksof Baxter’sface.Raphinaarrivesbefore the bandfinishestheir
songand reconcileswithConor,andbothof themleave the partyand the school inuproar. After
secretlysayinghisgoodbyestohisfamilylaterthatnight,ConorandRaphinapersuade Brendanto
drive themtoDalkeyso theycan escape inthe motorcruiserand headto London.Brendanagrees
and drivesthemtothe harbour,where BrendanandConor exchange anemotional embrace.Conor
