A machine is something made by humans to help with work and make life easier. There are two types of machines: simple and complex. The six simple machines are the lever, inclined plane, wheel and axle, screw, wedge, and pulley. A screw has a flat head with a spiral winding from the pointed end to the wide end. Screws are used for putting things together, as seen in door hinges, desks, chairs, basketball hoops, and fans.

South To Alaska
Melvin Owens had dreamed of living in Alaska since childhood. In the 1960s and 1970s, he built two boats to fulfill this dream, eventually completing a 47-foot boat called the Red Dog. He sailed the Red Dog alone from Arkansas to Alaska, a journey over 10,000 miles long that took him through the Panama Canal and up the Pacific coast. After many challenges along the way, Melvin and his wife Cecil arrived in Ketchikan, Alaska in 1973, where they lived for 27 years. Their story is documented in the book South to Alaska.
