The document discusses a proposal for President Obama to raise the debt ceiling through an executive order citing the 8th Amendment's prohibition of "cruel and unusual punishments." It summarizes the arguments that defaulting on debt would inflict massive economic harm globally and deprive citizens of basic necessities in violation of human dignity. Background provides context on past rulings that penalties destroying one's social status violate the 8th Amendment. The organization Queen of Green aims to empower the poor globally through sustainable programs.
The document summarizes the key points of the Atlantic Charter and President Roosevelt's State of the Union address that outlined a vision for the postwar world. The Atlantic Charter established that no territorial gains would be sought and territorial adjustments would respect the wishes of local peoples. All people had a right to self-determination. The address defined four essential freedoms: freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want through economic cooperation, and freedom from fear through global disarmament.
The document traces the origins and evolution of politics from Ancient Greece to the French Revolution. In Ancient Greece, different forms of government like democracy and oligarchy emerged as politics centered on the relationship between citizens and the state. The Romans adopted many Greek political ideas and developed the concept of citizenship, with government as a public institution. During the French Revolution, the political spectrum was born as the National Assembly divided along ideological lines from radicals on the left to moderates and conservatives on the right.
State of emergency in contemporary constitutions p. toniniLepido
The document discusses the concepts of emergency and state of emergency in constitutional law. It defines emergency as a factual crisis situation that disrupts normal circumstances, while a state of emergency is the legal reaction and suspension of some constitutional provisions. Countries approach states of emergency differently, with some having formal provisions, others rejecting the concept, and some constitutions omitting it. Most concentrate emergency powers in the executive branch.
Core paper presentation on compensation jurisprudence 1MuddaththirTak
This document discusses the jurisprudence around compensation in India. It outlines how while the constitution does not expressly provide for compensation, the Supreme Court has evolved the concept under Article 21's right to life and liberty. It discusses key cases that established the state's liability for damages caused by its employees, discarding the distinction between sovereign and non-sovereign functions. The document also notes sections of codes that provide for victim compensation and limitations on judicial activism in awarding compensation.
Civil liberties protect individuals from government interference with fundamental freedoms like speech and religion, while civil rights protect against discrimination. The document discusses how the incorporation doctrine, through the 14th Amendment's due process clause, applied some protections of the Bill of Rights to state governments over time through important Supreme Court cases like Gitlow v. New York (1925). It established that states could regulate rights through reasonable restrictions.
The document discusses the ancient royal families known as "The Royals" who have historically owned and managed global assets and land. It warns of several violations of the keepership agreements between The Royals and those managing assets, including attacks on royal assets in Syria and Iraq, unauthorized exposure and sale of assets, and potential use of weapons of mass destruction. It declares imminent loss of keepership for any parties involved in these violations and instructs all asset holders to process settlements only through the Royal Imperial International Court of Justice.
This document discusses how the concept of human rights challenges state sovereignty in international relations. It provides examples from the 1990s onward of how international human rights law has continued developing, such as the establishment of international criminal courts and rulings that former heads of state can be prosecuted for human rights abuses. Mass migration across borders is also discussed as a challenge to sovereignty. The document explores debates around addressing issues like refugees and balancing human rights, border control, and cultural values.

The document discusses the antagonistic relationship between state sovereignty and human rights. It argues that while state sovereignty was originally conceived to promote peace by preventing external intervention in domestic affairs, it now hinders the implementation and enforcement of universal human rights. Sovereignty takes precedence over human rights in international relations, as states are reluctant to intervene in other states' internal issues due to concerns about sovereignty. This is seen in cases like the EU's reluctance to condemn Russia's actions in Chechnya and the weak international response to the Rwandan genocide. The document suggests redefining sovereignty as being for the benefit of peoples, not states, to balance it with human rights protections.
This document discusses offenses against the security of the state. It defines what constitutes a state and outlines two categories of offenses - those that oppose the existence of government and those that affect the orderly administration of public business. It discusses crimes like treason, sedition, rebellion, terrorism, and offenses related to official secrets. The document also summarizes the Crime Against State and Punishment Act of Nepal, which defines crimes against the state and their punishments. These include subversion, treason, revolt against friendly states, and prohibitions related to undermining sovereignty and espionage.
This document contains excerpts from the Declaration of Independence. It lists a series of grievances against King George III of Great Britain, including that he refused to pass laws for the public good, obstructed justice, kept standing armies, and imposed taxes without consent. It states that the colonies have petitioned for redress but their pleas have been ignored. The document concludes that the colonies must separate from Britain and declare themselves independent states with full power and authority.
The document discusses the goals of Reconstruction after the Civil War. It lists potential goals such as reunifying the nation peacefully, punishing political leaders and soldiers of the Confederacy, rebuilding the ruined Southern economy, and protecting the rights and providing compensation to freed slaves. Quotes from Abraham Lincoln, Thaddeus Stevens of Pennsylvania, and Ulysses S. Grant provide different perspectives on these goals, with Lincoln focusing on reunification, Stevens arguing for harsh punishment of Confederates, and Grant prioritizing the interests of freed slaves.
The Federalist Papers (In Modern Language)guestbc92ab
Hamilton argues that the Articles of Confederation have failed to establish an effective national government. He calls on citizens to establish a new system through ratifying the proposed Constitution. Failure to do so could endanger national unity, security, and standing in the world. Hamilton plans to publish a series of papers discussing the importance of the Union, the Confederation's inability to preserve it, the need for an energetic national government, the proposal's conformity with republican principles, its similarities to state constitutions, and how ratification will protect liberty and property.

Political Science 5 - Western Political Thought provides an overall perspective of major political movements of history from the rising of Egyptian, Greek and Roman Empires to Fascism and Communism as seen by great political thinkers from Plato, Aristotle, and St. Augustine, Machiavelli, Marx, and Lenin. Students will analyze the most important ideas and theories that have been developed from the time of the ancient Greeks to the present day. Students will learn that the American Founding Fathers designed a viable representative government by first dedicating themselves to careful study of the political philosophy of Europeans, with particular attention given to British political thinkers from the 16th and 17th century. The founding fathers focused primarily on the natural rights of man, which in turn varied according to the individual philosopher studied. Over the course of their study, the founding fathers openly discussed their opinions with one another so as to properly bring forth differing views in order to prudently construct a government that would protect individual liberty, as well as determine what was required of government to protect civil liberties. The class is taught from the perspective of industry professionals with knowledge of how classical and modern political continues to influence American government. Students will learn of multiple career options relating to the field of political science.
Alexander Hamilton proposed an economic plan as the first Secretary of the Treasury to establish the nation's finances and tie wealthy Americans' financial interests to the new government. The plan included fully funding the national debt by exchanging government securities for bonds, assuming state debts to unify the nation financially, implementing a protective tariff and excise taxes to generate revenue and encourage domestic industry, and establishing a national bank to facilitate government transactions and create a uniform currency. The plan met some resistance from southern states but was largely implemented.

The document discusses the results of a study on the impact of COVID-19 lockdowns on air pollution levels. Researchers analyzed data from dozens of countries and found that lockdowns led to an average decline of nearly 30% in nitrogen dioxide levels across major cities. However, they also observed that the reductions were temporary and air pollution rebounded once restrictions began lifting and economic activity resumed.

Conservatism is difficult to define because conservatives value tradition over rigid ideology and focus more on opposing change than proposing solutions. Key conservative beliefs include respecting traditions that have stood the test of time, acknowledging human fallibility, favoring social order over individual liberty, and seeing society as a complex organic system not easily improved by human design. Conservative thought encompasses traditional support for hierarchy, authority, and private property as well as more libertarian support for free markets. Modern variants like neoconservatism emphasize restoring social discipline and traditional values.

Key conservative beliefs include respecting traditions that have stood the test of time, acknowledging human fallibility, favoring social order over individual liberty, and seeing society as a complex organic system not easily improved by human design. Conservative thought incorporates traditions of authoritarian rule focused on obedience to established powers, paternalistic approaches that emphasize social responsibility among elites, and libertarian defenses of free markets and private property rights. Modern tensions exist between social conservatives focused on traditional values and economic libertarians prioritizing individual freedom.
This document discusses the roots and evolution of American political culture and government. It covers the philosophical influences on America's founding, such as ideas from Aristotle, the Greeks, Hobbes, Locke, and Rousseau. It also examines the key characteristics of American democracy, including popular consent, majority rule, and individualism. Additionally, it outlines changes in the US population over time including increasing diversity and an aging population. The document concludes by looking at modern American political ideologies like conservatism, liberalism, and libertarianism as well as views of and expectations toward the government.
Disraeli believed the rich had obligations to the poor, and promoted the idea that privileged elites should care for the less fortunate. According to Boris Johnson, a "one nation Tory" believes in uniting society and spreading opportunity to everyone. Leaders like Disraeli and Johnson promote themselves as "One Nation Conservatives" because it allows them to enact some social reforms and policies that benefit poorer citizens, in order to promote greater social stability and reduce the risk of revolution from below. By appearing to care about inequality, they aim to integrate poorer groups into the existing social and political hierarchy.
Modern Liberalism developed in response to the shortcomings of Classical Liberalism. It aims to provide equal opportunities and basic needs for all citizens while still allowing for economic freedom and private property. By embracing Modern Liberalism, governments can ensure citizens have a comfortable standard of living through policies like job creation and welfare programs. Events like the Great Depression showed how government intervention through Keynesian economics can stabilize economies and prevent widespread poverty. Overall, Modern Liberalism balances individual rights and economic competition with regulations that benefit society as a whole.

The Common Sense Campaign is a grassroots political movement aimed at restoring the US Constitutional Republic. It believes the federal government has expanded its powers beyond what was intended and threatens citizens' God-given rights. The group wants to assemble like-minded citizens into a voting block to support candidates who pledge to uphold core principles like limiting government overreach. The Mount Vernon Statement
Constitutional Conservatism: A Statement for the 21st Century
We recommit ourselves to the ideas of the American Founding.Through the Constitution, the Founders created an
enduring framework of limited government based on the rule of law. They sought to secure national independence,
provide for economic opportunity, establish true religious liberty and maintain a flourishing society of republican
self-government.
These principles define us as a country and inspire us as a people. They are responsible for a prosperous, just nation
unlike any other in the world. They are our highest achievements, serving not only as powerful beacons to all who strive
for freedom and seek self-government, but as warnings to tyrants and despots everywhere.
Each one of these founding ideas is presently under sustained attack. In recent decades, America’s principles have
been undermined and redefined in our culture, our universities and our politics. The selfevident truths of 1776 have
been supplanted by the notion that no such truths exist. The federal government today ignores the limits of the
Constitution, which is increasingly dismissed as obsolete and irrelevant.
Some insist that America must change, cast off the old and put on the new. But where would this lead — forward or
backward, up or down? Isn’t this idea of change an empty promise or even a dangerous deception?
The change we urgently need, a change consistent with the American ideal, is not movement away from but toward
our founding principles. At this important time, we need a restatement of Constitutional conservatism grounded in the
priceless principle of ordered liberty articulated in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.
The conservatism of the Declaration asserts self-evident truths based on the laws of nature and nature’s God. It
defends life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It traces authority to the consent of the governed. It recognizes man’s
self-interest but also his capacity for virtue.
The conservatism of the Constitution limits government’s powers but ensures that government performs its proper
job effectively. It refines popular will through the filter of representation. It provides checks and balances through the
several branches of government and a federal republic.
A Constitutional conservatism unites all conservatives through the natural fusion provided by American principles. It
reminds economic conservatives that morality is essential to limited government, social conservatives that unlimited
government is a threat to moral self-government, and national security conservatives that energetic but responsible
government is the key to America’s safety and leadership role in the world.
A Constitutional conservatism based on first principles provides the framework for a consistent and meaningful
policy agenda.
It applies the principle of limited government based on the rule of law to every proposal.
It honors the central place of individual liberty in American politics and life.

It encourages free enterprise, the individual entrepreneur, and economic reforms grounded in market solutions.
It supports America’s national interest in advancing freedom and opposing tyranny in the world and prudently
considers what we can and should do to that end.
It informs conservatism’s firm defense of family, neighborhood, community, and faith.
If we are to succeed in the critical political and policy battles ahead, we must be certain of our purpose.
We must begin by retaking and resolutely defending the high ground of America’s founding principles.
