1. Drama - Fauve
• The opening of this film shows an abandoned train car and a fly buzzing with a boy shouting to ’open up’ being
trapped inside a toilet while his friend, Tyler, releases him. It is also revealed that the two boys are playing a game
involving challenging each other by throwing stones or seeing who laughs first giving an indication that this game will be
the driving force in the narrative and the cause of the problems. This scene foreshadows the ending of the film in which
the same boy gets stuck and drowns/suffocates in what looks like quicksand with Tyler being unable to save him. What
follows for most of the story is expanding the characters through dialogue and visuals with the ultimate aim of one of the
boys reaching six times they tricked or beat the other. They made their way into an open surface mine where they see a
truck driving toward them and they run away until they reach the sand one of the Tyler appears to be stuck but pulls
himself out while pushing the other boy into the middle of the quicksand, where he can’t get free. This is the inciting
incident which causes the progression of the narrative as the rest of the film focuses on Tyler trying to find his friend help
before going back and find his friend is gone clearly implying that he fully sank into the ground at this point the same fly
from the start of the movie can be heard buzzing around Tyler, referencing the first time his friend was stuck but he was
able to free him . After this scene there is a dramatic shift in tone as the colors become under saturated and for the first
time we hear music, somber music possible reflective of Tyler's emotions as he is picked up by a stranger and is offered a
ride home. Tyler’s character completely changes at this point in the story only saying two or three words and when the car
is stopped he sees a fox, calling back to an earlier largely inconsequential scene where his friend tells him there is fox
behind him but Tyler doesn't’t look thinking its part of the game. Though the use a camera angles, cuts and Tyler's reaction
it is implied that this is the same fox and its looking directly at him giving additional meaning as it means that his friend
was telling the truth and wanted him to see the fox, evidently playing on Tyler's emotions as it was him lying about getting
stuck that caused his friend to die and the film ends with a shot of the fox walking away.
