This document provides context and acknowledgments for a translation of the Shobogenzo, a spiritual masterpiece by Japanese Zen master Dogen composed of 95 discourses given to his disciples between 1231-1253. The translator undertook the massive project at the request of his master, Rev. Jiyu-Kennett, to whom he is deeply grateful. He also thanks others who provided support and editing assistance over the 14 years it took to complete. The translation is offered freely in memory of Rev. Jiyu-Kennett to benefit all beings.
