After Dhruva was insulted by
harsh words of his step-mother,
Suruchi & his father, King Uttanapada
remaining just silent, he became very
angry & immediately left the palace and
went to his mother.
He narrated the entire incident
to his mother & she also became
greatly aggrieved.
She said to her son: My dear
son, don't wish for anything
inauspicious for others. Anyone who
inflicts pains upon others suffers himself
fromthatpain.Youmustengageyourselfin
worshiping the lotus feet of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
Suniti continued: The Supreme
Personality of Godhead is so great
that simply by worshiping His lotus feet,
your great-grandfather, Lord Brahma
& Your grandfather Svayambhuva Manu
achieved perfection. My dear boy, you
also should take shelter of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, who is very kind
to His devotees.
The great sage Narada overheard
this news, and understanding all
the activities of Dhruva Maharaja, he
was struck with wonder. He approached
Dhruva, and spoke to him that as a little
boy, the attachment should be to sports
etc & that he should not be so affected
by insulting words. Narada Muni also
suggested that the process of meditation
& austerities to achieve the mercy of
the Lord are very difficult & not possible
for any ordinary man. Thus, Narada Muni
discouraged Dhruva & advised him to go
home.
Dhruva Maharaja said: O learned
brahmana, I want to occupy a
position more exalted than my fathers
and grandfathers. If you will oblige, kindly
advise me of an honest path to follow by
which I can achieve the goal of my life.
The great sage Narada told Dhruva
Maharaja: Any person who
desires the fruits of the four principles
DHRUVA MAHARAJ
7. 3
religiosity, economic development, sense
gratification and, at the end, liberation,
should engage himself in the devotional
service of the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, for worship of His lotus feet
yields the fulfillment of all of these.
Narada Muni instructed Dhruva
Maharaja to go to the bank of
the Yamuna, in a forest named Madhuvana
& to meditate on the Supreme Personality
of Godhead.
Narada Muni also described in
great details, the beautiful form
of the Supreme Lord
Then he gave him the mantra to
be chanted: âOm namo bhagavate
vasudevayaâ.
Dhruva Maharaja acted exactly
according to the advice of his
spiritual master, the great sage Narada.
For the first month Dhruva
Maharaja ate only fruits and
berries on every third day, only to keep
his body and soul together, and in this
way he progressed in his worship of the
Supreme Personality of Godhead.
In the second month Dhruva
Maharaja ate only every six days,
and for his eatables he took dry grass and
leaves. Thus he continued his worship.
In the third month he drank
water only every nine days. Thus
he remained completely in trance and
worshiped the Supreme Personality of
Godhead, who is adored by selected
verses.
In the fourth month Dhruva
Maharaja became a complete
master of the breathing exercise, and
thus he inhaled air only every twelfth day.
In this way he became completely fixed in
his position and worshiped the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
By the fifth month, Maharaja
Dhruva, the son of the King, had
controlled his breathing so perfectly that
he was able to stand on only one leg, just
as a column stands, without motion, and
concentrate his mind fully on the Lord.
When Dhruva Maharaja thus
meditated the three worlds
began to tremble.
As Dhruva Maharaja, steadily
standing on one leg, the pressure
of his big toe pushed down half the earth,
the total universal breathing became
choked up, and all the great demigods in
all the planetary systems felt suffocated
8. 4
and thus took shelter of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
When the demigods were thus
reassured by the Personality of
Godhead, they were freed from all fears,
and after offering their obeisances, they
returned to their heavenly planets. Then
the Lord, got on the back of Garuda, who
carried Him to the Madhuvana Forest to
see Dhruva.
The form of the Lord, which Dhruva
Maharaja, was fully absorbed in
meditation, all of a sudden disappeared.
Thus Dhruva was agitated, and his
meditation broke. But as soon as he opened
his eyes he saw the Supreme Personality
of Godhead personally present, just as he
had been seeing the Lord in his heart.
When Dhruva Maharaja saw
his Lord he offered Him
obeisances.
Although Dhruva Maharaja was
a small boy, he wanted to offer
prayers to the Supreme Personality of
Godhead in suitable language. But because
he was inexperienced, he could not do so.
The Lord, being situated in everyone's
heart, could understand Dhruvaâs desire &
He touched His conchshell to the forehead
of Dhruva Maharaja and empowered him.
Hence Druva Maharaj offered prayers.
Then the Lord spoke: My dear
Dhruva, I shall favor you. I shall
award you the glowing planet known as
the polestar, which will continue to exist
even after the dissolution at the end of
the millennium. You will rule continuously
the entire world for thirty-six thousand
years & you will never become old. In this
way you will be able to enjoy the blessings
of material happiness in this life, and at
the time of your death you will be able to
remember Me.
Then Lord Vishnu, returned to His
abode.
But at the end when the Supreme
Personality of Godhead appeared
before him, Druva was simply ashamed of
the material demands he had in his mind.
He thought to himself: Alas, just
look at me! I am so unfortunate.
I approached the lotus feet of the
Supreme Personality of Godhead, who
can immediately cut the chain of the
repetition of birth and death, but still,
out of my foolishness, I prayed for things
which are perishable.
Despitehavingachievedthedesired
result of his determination by
worshiping the lotus feet of the Lord,
9. 5
Dhruva Maharaja was not very pleased.
Thus he returned to his home.
Valmikiâs real name was Ratnakara.
When he was a very young boy,
one day he went into the forest. While
playing he lost his way and began to cry.
Just then a hunter came there looking
for a prey. He saw the chubby boy and
pacified him. The hunter had no children.
He took the boy to his hut in the midst of
the jungle. In the meantime, Ratnakara's
father searched for his son all around the
hermitage, but could not find him. Finally
he and his wife thought that the boy had
become the prey of some wild beast. Both
wept very much.
The hunter and his wife brought
up their child with great love.
Ratnakara took the hunter for his father
and the hunter's wife for his mother. He
was taught how to hunt by the father. He
became a hunter with a sure aim. To the
birds and beasts of the forest, he became
verily Yama, the God of Death. When he
came of age, his foster father searched
for a bride and celebrated his marriage
with a beautiful girl from a hunterâs
family. Thus, Ratnakara's family grew. It
became very difficult for him to provide
food and clothing to his large family. So
he took to robbery. He began to attack
people going from one village to another,
frightened them and took away all that
they had. If they opposed him, he killed
them.
One day Ratnakara was sitting by
the side of a road waiting for a
victim. It happened that the great sage
Narada was passing that way and was lost
in joy, playing His Veena, singing Lordâs
Holy name. Suddenly, Ratnakara rushed at
him. He lifted the sharp knife in his hands
and shouted, "Look here! Hand over all
you have or else I'll break your head." But
Narada was a divine sage who wandered
all over the Earth, the Heaven and the
Lower plantes. He was not frightened by
the loud shouts of Ratnakara. He smilingly
said, "My dear man, all that I have is this
old Veena and the rags I wear. If you want
them, you can certainly take them. Why
SAGE VALMIKI
10. 6
should you break my head for these?"
Ratnakara was astonished at these
words. He looked up at Naradaâs
face. There was neither fear nor anger;
there was only peace. Narada sat beneath
a tree and playing His Veena, sang a sweet
song glorifying Lord. Ratnakara was
deeply moved. Noticing the change, the
sage Narada paused in his song and said,
"Brother, stealing is a sin. Killing animals
is also sinful. Why do you do such evil?"
Ratnakara said, "Sir, I have a
large family. They partake of
my happiness and my troubles. I have
to provide them with food and clothing.
Hunting and stealing are all I know. What
else can I do?" The sage smiled and said,
"My friend, will any member of your family
partake of your sin also? Go and ask them,
and bring back their reply."
On reaching home, he first went
to his father and said, "Father,
I rob people to get food and clothing for
you all. Do you not share in that sin? âHis
father was angry and said,â No, never.
You sinner, you should not do such bad
things. You have to suffer alone for what
you do." Ratnakara went to his mother
and she also scolded him and sent him
away. He then went to his wife and said,
"I am a robber but I steal for your sake.
Therefore you are also partners in my sin.
Isn't that so?" The wife was displeased
and said, âWhat have we to do with your
sin? You are my husband, and my children
are your children. It is your duty to look
after us and give us food and clothing."
Ratnakara's eyes were opened.
He realized that he alone was
responsible for all his sins and no one else
would share his sin. As soon as it was clear
to him, he ran to Narada, crying in grief.
Falling at Narada's feet he narrated all
that had happened and asked the sage
to save him. Narada rejoiced at robbers
transformation, told him, "Fear not, my
son. There is one name which redeems even
the greatest of sinners. Repeat the name
with all your mind and soul in it. All your
sins will be washed away soon." He then
whispered in his ears the sacred name
"Rama" and asked the robber to repeat
it. The whole of robberâs life was spent in
doing and saying only harsh things. So the
robbercouldnotuttertheword"Ramaâ.So
Narada, being very compassionate, tried
another method. He slowly uttered the
word "Ma ra" inverting the sacred name.
This time the robber could pronounce
the letters "Ma ra" , Ma ra...." and he
started repeating the letters in quick
succession... "Ma ra, Ma ra, Ma... Ra....
Ma Ra...Ra...ma...Rama....Rama....Rama..."
Thus after a time without his realizing it,
the robber was repeating the holy name.
He was captivated by the charm of the
sacred name and he went on repeating
the name forgetting his surroundings.
He sat on like that continuously without
moving and without opening his eyes and
11. 7
years passed away. Seeing him sitting like an immovable stone, ants, worms and insects
crawled fearlessly near him and on him and built their homes and nests. The ant hills
grew and grew until they covered him fully and he could not even be seen.
This, undisturbed tapasya washed off all his sins and at last he gained a vision
of Lord. Overflowing with great joy and bliss, he rose from his seat shedding
off the ant hills around him. The word 'Valmika' in Sanskrit means an ant-hill. Since he
came out of an ant-hill, he got the name of Valmiki.

Yudhishthira and his four brothers
were the rulers of Indraprastha
under the power of King Dhritarashtra.
Dhritarashtraâs son, Duryodhana was
always jealous of his cousins and the
wealth they had acquired by building
Indraprastha. To take revenge on the
Pandavas, his uncle Shakuni came up with
Lord Krsna protects Draupadi
14. 10
a plan and together with his brothers, his
friend Karna and maternal uncle Shakuni,
he conspired to call the Pandavas at
Hastinapura and win their kingdoms in a
game of gambling. Shakuni was skilled at
winning by unfair means. The idea was that
Shakuni would play against Yudhishthira
and win at the gambling table what was
impossible to win at the battlefield.
As the game proceeded,
Yudhishthira lost all his wealth
and kingdom one by one. Having lost all
material wealth, he went on to put his
brothers at stake one by one and lost
them too. Ultimately he put himself at
stake, and lost again. All the Pandavas
were now the servants of Kauravas.
But for the Shakuni, the humiliation of
Pandavas was not complete. He prods
Yudhishthira that he has not lost
everything yet; Yudhishthira still has
Draupadi with him and if he wishes he can
win everything back by putting Draupadi
at stake. Yudhishthira gets trapped and
to the horror of everybody present,
he puts Draupadi as a bet for the next
round. But Bhishma and Drona oppose this
move recalling that a queen being a woman
cannot be put at stake. Yudhishthira, being
helpless, puts her at stake. Shakuni wins
again. Duryodhana commands his younger
brother Dushasana to forcefully bring
her into the forum. Dushasana grabs her
by the hair and brings her into the court
dragging her by the hair.
Now in an emotional appeal to the
elders present in the forum,
Draupadi repeatedly questions the right
of Yudhishthira to place her at stake
when he himself had lost his freedom
and as a consequence did not possess any
property in the first place. Everybody
remains silent.
Then to the horror of everybody
present, Duryodhana commands
Dushasana to strip Draupadi of her sari.
She prayed to all the seniors to save her
but they could not help her. Then she
prayed to her husbands to save her but
they too were unable to protect her. As
Dushasana started disrobing her, she
tried to hold the sari in her hands to
protect herself but could not sustain as
Dushasana was very strong.
Finally, Draupadi prays to Krishna
to protect her, âO Govinda! O
Keshava! O beloved of the Gopis! O lord of
Vrindavana! O Janardana, you destroy all
afflictions. O Lord, Soul of the universe,
Creator of the world! Save me now. I
am distressed in this evil assembly of
Kurusâ. Krsna immediately came to the
assembly hall by his inconceivable mystic
potency without being seen by anyone. As
Dushasana pulled Draupadiâs sari, Krsna
provided her with unlimited cloth to cover
herself. Dushasana pulled & pulled her sari
& as he did so, the princess spun around â
but he could not disrobe her. Soon a large
heap of cloth lay piled up on the floor &
Dushasana was completely exhausted.
After the whole incident, Bhima
became furious at Dushasana and
says, âI Bhima, Panduâs son vows until I will
tear open Dushasanaâs chest and drink his
blood on the battlefield, I will not show
my face to my ancestors.â
Seeing this wonderful event, all
the kings praised Draupadi.
16. 12
There was once a young brahmana
named Ajamila, who was a
reservoir of good character and conduct.
He was mild and gentle, always truthful,
well versed in the Vedic scriptures, and
very pure.
One day, on the request of his
father,Ajamilawenttotheforest
to collect fruit, flowers and grasses. On
the way home, he came upon a very lusty
low-class man embracing and kissing a
prostitute. Both of them were drunk, and
the man was smiling, singing and enjoying
himself without shame. The prostituteâs
eyes were rolling in intoxication, and her
dress had become loose. When Ajamila
saw her, the lusty desires in his heart
awakened, and in illusion he fell under
their control.
Remembering the instructions of
the scriptures, Ajamila tried not
to gaze at the woman. He strained to
control his lusty desires with the help of
his knowledge and intellect, but he failed
and as a result lost all his good sense. In
the days that followed he always thought
about the prostitute, and within a short
time he took her as a servant in his
house and abandoned all the brahminical
principles.
Ajamila began spending the money
he had inherited from his father
on various gifts to satisfy the prostitute.
He even abandoned his beautiful young
wife, who came from a very respectable
family. Thus Ajamila spent his long life
irresponsibly breaking all the rules and
regulations of the holy scriptures. He
was unclean and addicted to forbidden
activities. Living extravagantly, he
maintained his family by harassing others,
cheating, gambling and theft.
Over the eighty-eight years of
Ajamilaâs life, he fathered ten
sons by the prostitute. Ajamilaâs youngest
son, a baby named Narayana, was naturally
very dear to both his father and mother.
The childâs broken language and awkward
movements greatly endeared him to old
Ajamila, who always took care of him and
enjoyed his activities.
Narayana is a name for God, and
thus unintentionally the old man
was always chanting the holy name of the
Lord. Although he was referring to his
son and not the original Narayana, Ajamila
was becoming purified because the holy
name of Narayana is very powerful.
Always taking care of his son and calling
his name, Ajamila was not aware that
his own life was now exhausted. As the
time of death approached for the foolish
Ajamila, he began thinking exclusively of
his son Narayana.
At the moment of death, Ajamila
saw three awkward persons with
deformed bodily features, fierce and
twisted faces, and hair standing erect on
their bodies. They were the Yamadutas
(the servants of Yamaraja, the lord
of death), and they had come to take
Ajamila away to their masterâs abode.
When Ajamila saw them, he became
extremely bewildered, and because of
his attachment to his child, who was
playing a short distance away, he loudly
and tearfully called the childâs name:
âNarayana!â
Immediately the Visnudutas, the
servants of the Supreme Lord
Visnu(Narayana),arrivedonthespot.They
17. 13
had heard the holy name of their master
from the mouth of the dying Ajamila, who
had chanted without offense because he
had chanted in complete anxiety. As the
Visnudutas arrived, the Yamadutas were
snatching the soul from the body of the
dying Ajamila. With resounding voices,
the messengers of Lord Visnu ordered
them to stop and thus saved Ajamila
from death. Although the servants of
Yamaraja have jurisdiction over all sinful
living beings, the messengers of Visnu
are capable of punishing even Yamaraja
himself if he wrongs a devotee of Visnu,
the Supreme Lord.
When the Yamadutas were thus
forbidden from carrying out
their mission, they exclaimed, âWho
are you, sirs, that you dare challenge
the jurisdiction of Yamaraja? Whose
servants are you, where have you come
from, and why are you forbidding us to
touch Ajamila? You may know that this
man Ajamila did not undergo atonement
for his sins. Because of his sinful life, we
must take him to the court of Yamaraja
for punishment. According to the extent
of his sinful acts, he will be punished and
thus purified.â
The Visnudutas replied, âAjamila
has already atoned not only for
sins performed in one life but for those
performed in millions of lives, for in a
helpless condition he chanted the holy
name of Narayana. Although he was calling
his sonâs name, he nevertheless uttered
the four syllables na-ra-ya-na. Simply by
chanting the name of Narayana in this
way, he sufficiently atoned for the sinful
reactions of millions of lives.
At the time of death, Ajamila
helplessly and very loudly chanted
the holy name of the Lord. That chanting
alone has already freed him from the
reactions of all sinful life. Therefore, O
servants of Yamaraja, do not try to take
him to your master for punishment. One
who chants the holy name is immediately
freed from the reactions of unlimited sins,
even if he chants indirectly to indicate
something else, jokingly, for musical
entertainment, or even neglectfully. This
is accepted by all the learned scholars
of the scriptures. If one chants the holy
name of Hari and then dies because of an
accidental misfortune, one is immediately
absolved from having to enter hellish life,
even though he is sinful.
âAlthough one may neutralize the
reactions of sinful life through
austerity, charity, vows and other such
methods, these pious activities cannot
uproot the material desires in oneâs heart.
However, if one serves the Personality of
Godhead, he is immediately freed from all
such contaminations. If a person unaware
of the effective potency of a certain
medicine takes that medicine, it will act
even without his knowledge because the
medicineâs potency does not depend on
the patientâs understanding. Similarly,
even though one does not know the value
of chanting the holy name of the Lord, if
one chants knowingly or unknowingly, the
chanting will be very effective.â
The Visnudutas released the
brahmana Ajamila from the
bondage of the Yamadutas and thus saved
him from death. Ajamila, now free from
fear, came to his senses and immediately
offered respects to the Visnudutas by
bowing his head at their feet. He was
18. 14
extremely pleased by their presence, for
they had saved him from the Yamadutas.
When the Visnudutas saw that Ajamila
was attempting to say something, they
suddenly disappeared.
Having heard the discourse
between the Yamadutas and the
Visnudutas, Ajamila could now understand
the transcendental religious principles
concerning the relationship between the
living being and the Supreme Personality
of Godhead. Furthermore, since Ajamila
had heard their glorification of God, he
was now a perfectly pure devotee and
could thus remember all his past sinful
activities, which he greatly regretted
having performed.
Iam such a sinful person,â he
said. âBut now since I have this
opportunity, I must completely control my
mind, life and senses and always engage in
devotional service so that I may not again
fall into the deep darkness and ignorance
of material life. Because I identified
myself with my body, I was subjected to
desires for sense gratification and thus
performed many pious and impious acts.
That was my material bondage.
But now I shall disentangle myself
from that bondage. Being a most
fallen soul, I was victimized by illusions
and was like a dancing dog led around
by a womanâs hand. Now I shall give up
these lusty desires and free myself from
these illusions. I shall become a merciful,
well-wishing friend to all living entities
and always absorb myself in Krsna
consciousness.â
Because of a momentâs association
with devotees of the Supreme
Lord, Ajamila was able to detach himself
with determination from the material
conception of life. Freed from all material
attraction, he immediately started for
the city of Hardwar on the Ganges River.
In Hardwar, Ajamila stayed at a Visnu
temple, where he executed bhakti-yoga,
the process of devotional service. He
controlled his senses and fully applied his
mind in the service of the Lord. When his
intelligence and mind were fixed on the
form of the Lord, Ajamila once again saw
before him the four celestial messengers
of Visnu. Recognizing them as the ones
he had seen previously, he offered his
respects by bowing down before them.
The Visnudutas had gone away
for some time to allow Ajamila
to become firmly fixed in meditation
on the Lord. Now that his devotion had
matured, they returned to take him back
to the spiritual world. Upon seeing the
Visnudutas, Ajamila gave up his material
body and regained his original spiritual
body, which was just suitable for an
associate of the Lord. This is the result
of perfection in Krsna consciousness:
after giving up the material body, one is
immediately transferred to the spiritual
world in oneâs original spiritual body to
become an associate of the Supreme
Personality of Godhead.
Accompanied by the Visnudutas,
Ajamila then boarded a golden
airplane that took him through the
airways, directly to the abode of the
Supreme Lord Visnu, the husband of the
goddess of fortune. Although he had been
destined to be carried away to hell by
the Yamadutas, Ajamila was saved by the
Visnudutas and was able to go back home,
back to Godhead, because he chanted the
19. 15
holy name of the Lord at the time of his
death. Therefore if a person faithfully
and inoffensively chants the holy name
of the Lord, who can doubt that he will
return to Godhead?
At the time of death one is
certainly bewildered because
his bodily functions are in disorder. At
that time, even one who throughout his
life has practiced chanting the holy name
of the Lord may not be able to chant
the Hare Krsna mantra very distinctly.
Nevertheless, such a person receives all
the benefits of chanting the holy name.
While the body is fit, therefore, we
should chant the holy name of the Lord
loudly and distinctly. If one does so, it is
quite possible that even at the time of
death he will be able to properly chant
the holy name of the Lord with love and
faith and return home, back to Godhead,
without a doubt.

The story of Gopal Guru There is a legend surrounding the addition of the word
guru to his name. There was once a devotee in Puri who was particularly attached
to the chanting of the Holy Names. As a matter of fact, the chanting had become
automatic for him, so that his tongue muttered the names incessantly. One day Gopal
Guru saw this devotee on his way to the toilet, holding his tongue between his fingers
because he did not wish to chant the Holy Name while engaged in an impure act. Gopal
Guru was just a lad, but he was able to understand why the devotee was doing this
and he said to him, âWhat are you doing? Donât you know that there are no regulations
governing the time and place for chanting the Holy Name? One should chant the Name
in all times and circumstances, pure or impure. If you were not able to chant while
defecating, how would you be able to have an auspicious death, should death suddenly
come upon him at that time?â
Mahaprabhu overheard Gopal sharing this wisdom with the Vaishnava and was
very impressed and he announced to all his devotees that Gopal was doing the
work of a guru. From that day on, the young Makaradhvaja Pandit was known as Gopal
Guru. Because he both preached and practiced, he was factually acting as an acharya
or guru.

Sri Haridas Thakur appeared
appeared in a family of Yavanas
(Mohammedans) in Bangladesh. After
remaining there for some time, he came
to the banks of Ganga at Fulia, near
Santipur. Haridas Thakur. From his very
birth he was very deeply devoted to the
Holy Names of Sri Krsna.
When he came to live by the banks
of the Ganges, Advaita Acarya
was very happy to get his association.
The brahmana residents of Fulia were
very pleased to see how he worshipped
the Holy Name, and they used to come
every day to have his darshan. When the
Mohammedan administrator came to know
of all this he began to burn with malice
and went to the local Mohammedan king to
inform him, âThough he is Mohammedan,
he behaves as a Hindu, are therefore he
should be brought here for trial.â Hearing
the words of that sinful man, the local
king who was also very sinful, had Haridas
Thakur brought there immediately.
The Mohammedan King told
Haridas, âJust give up this
chanting and say the Kalma (prayer of the
Mohammedans).â
Haridasa Thakura replied, âThe
Supreme Lord is one, though
His names might be different. The Hindu
sastras are the Puranas and the Muslim
sastra is the Koran. Everyone acts as he
is inspired by the Lord, as also do I. Some
Yavanas become Hindus and some Hindus
become Yavanas, to worship the Lord. O
Maharaja, you can now judge me.â

Hearing these words the Kazi replied that it would be necessary to punish him.
Hearing the decree of the Kazi, the Mulukpati addressed Haridasa, âMy brother,
just follow your own religion. Then you will have nothing to worry about. Otherwise you
will have to be punished.â
In reply to this Haridasa Thakura exclaimed, âEven if you cut my body into pieces,
I will never give up the chanting of Hari nama.â
After hearing these words of Haridasa spoken with great determination, the
Kazi declared, âHe should be beaten in twenty-two market places. If he doesnât
die after this, then I will know that the learned gentleman speaks the truth.â Thus
having heard the words of the Kazi, the sinful Mulukpati then ordered that Haridasa
Thakura be beaten in twenty-two market places. Haridasa remembered the Lord by
chanting âKrsna Krsnaâ, and in the happiness of that remembrance, he didnât feel any
bodily inconvenience.
The demoniac Mohammedans, though they tried to harm Haridasa Thakura, were
unable to do so. Haridasa Thakur was immersed in the nectar of the Name and
thus gradually the Mohammedans could understand that he wasnât an ordinary person.
Thus they humbly submitted to the Thakura, âHaridasa! We can understand
that you are a genuine saintly person. No one can do anything to you. But the
Mulukpati wonât understand any of this. Rather he will have our heads severed.â Hearing
their frightened pleas Haridasaâs external consciousness ceased and he entered into
deep meditation on the Lordâs Holy Name.
Then the Mohammedans carried his body on their shoulders to the Mulukpati, who
surmised that he was dead. Thinking as such he ordered that his body be thrown
in the Ganga. Haridasaâs body floated down the Ganga until he reached Fulia ghat, where
he got out of the water and began to loudly chant Hari Nama. Seeing the greatness of
Haridasa Thakura, the Mulukpati became fearful. Along with the other Mohammedans
he came there and begged Haridas Thakur to forgive him for his offense.
Considering him to be a holy man, they all offered their salutations and thus
were delivered from their offences. Having witnessed the pastimes of Haridas
Thakura, the devotees were in ecstacy.

Glories Of Rupa and Sanatana Goswami
Srila Rupa and Sanatana Goswami
were very qualified; they were
illustrious scholars of the Sanskrit
language. They also had mastered Bengali
and Persian languages. They were so well
behaved that they attracted the hearts of
everyone. The expert advisors of the King
of Bengal, Nawab Hussain Shah informed
him that if he could get these two first
class Hindu Brahmans to be his ministers
then he could have control over all of the
Hindu population. Nawab Hussain Shah
approached Rupa and Sanatana Goswami
and ordered them to take the post of the
ministers of his kingdom. And if they did
not, he would not only persecute them
but he would have rampant persecution
of the entire Hindu population. It was
out of compassion and fear, that harm
would be done to innocent, that Rupa and
Sanatana Goswami accepeted the posts
of Prime Minister and Finance and Home
Minister of the kingdom of Bengal. They
both, with their incredible qualifications
were literally running the whole state and
thus Nawab Hussain Shah who although
was the most cruel, merciless meat eating
killer, he gave Rupa and Sanatana Goswami
massive treasures, built magnificient
palaces for them, offered them grand
estates and treated them just like their
own younger brothers. King gave them the
very exalted titles of Dabir Khas to Rupa
Goswami and Sakar Malik to Sanatana
Goswami. This was not an ordinary thing.
For a Muslim king, at that time, to give a
Hindu, a Muslim name even though they
were still practicing their Vedantic faith
was very, very great and rare honor.
But although Rupa and Santana
Goswami was with so much
material opulence, they were constantly
immersed in glorifying Radha and Krishna
and speaking from Srimad-Bhagvatam.
Scholars came from all directions just to
hearthemspeakfromtheHolyScriptures.
When these Brahmans would come,
Rupa and Sanatana Goswami, with great
humility, would welcome them and serve
them, very humbly accepting the position
of servant. They were born in Saraswat
Brahman families in Karnataka and they
were very much exalted in all their
personal qualities, yet they considered
themselves to be lower than the straw in
the street.
26. 22
Rupa and Santana Goswami wanted
to surrender their lives to Lord
Chaitanya. They were ashamed that they
were serving a violent, cruel, materialistic
king, therefore regretted the position
they held and wanted the shelter of Lord
Chaitanyaâs mercy. They understood that
only He could save them. So, they wrote
a letter to Lord informing about their
position and their desire. Like this they
wrote 2-3 letters but no reply came.
Finally, a reply came. Lord Chaitanya
wanted them to carry on with their service
and await the Lordâs mercy.
While Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
was on His way to Vrindavan,
Lord specifically went way off the proper
route to Vrindavan just to meet Rupa and
Sanatana Goswami. Lord came to the town
of Ramkeli. There He was performing His
Sankirtanwithmillionsofpeopleinthevery
capital and residence of the King. When
King was informed about this sannyasi
who came with so many followers, he was
astounded. Then he called Keshava Chatri,
a very great devotee and servant of the
King, and inquired about the Lord from
him. Keshava Chatri understood that the
king was very demoniac and violent. So he
said, âActually He is just a beggar, doing
madhukari door to door and He has one or
two disciples with him. Donât worry; itâs
not worth even thinking about Him.â âAH!
What are you saying? He is the Supreme
Personality of Godhead, I can understand
thisâ, said the King. He made a law that
no one should disobey Lord Chaitanya and
if anyone interfers with His Sankirtan he
will be punished. But Rupa and Sanatana
Goswami understood that the king had a
very, very unstable mind.
In the middle of the night, they
disguised themselves and went
to the place were Lord Chaitanya was
staying. First they approached Lord
Nityanand and Srila Haridas Thakur and
they brought them in to the personal
presence of Lord. In great humility both
27. 23
brothers took bunches of straw between their teeth and each binding a cloth around
his neck they fell down like rods before the Lord. Upon seeing Lord, the two brothers
were overwhelmed with joy and out of humility they began to cry. The two brothers got
up n taking straw between their teeth; they humbly offered their prayers with folded
hands.
âAll glories to Sri Krishna Chaitanya Mahaprabhu the most merciful savior of the
fallen souls. All glories to the Supreme Personality. Sir, we belong to the lowest
class of men and our associates and employments are also of the lowest type. Therefore
we cannot introduce ourselves to you. We feel very much ashamed standing here before
you. Dear Lord, You have incarnated to deliver the fallen souls, You should consider that
in this world there is none so fallen as us. We are more degraded, fallen and sinful than
Jagai and Madhai. Actually we belong to the caste of meat-eaters because we are the
servant of meat-eaters. Indeed our activities are exactly like those of meat-eaters.
Because we always associate with such people, we are inimical towards cows and the
Brahmans. No one within the three worlds is sufficiently powerful to deliver us. You are
the only Savior of the fallen souls.â
Hearing this prayer by Dabir Khas and Sakar Malik, Lord Chaitanya said, âMy
dear brothers you are my very old servants. My dear Sakar Malik from this
day on, your name will be changed to Sanatana Goswami. My dear Dabir Khas your name
will be Srila Rupa Goswami.
Birth after birth you both are my eternal servants. I am sure that Krishna will
deliver you soon.â
Lord Chaitanya then embraced Rupa and Sanatana Goswami and He placed His
lotus feet on their heads. Lord Chaitanya then bid farewell to continue His
Vrindavan tour.

When Lord Caitanya was a young
boy he disguised himself as an
ordinary boy. Nobody knew that he was
the Avatar of Krishna, that he was the
supreme Lord. So, little Nimai Pandit
would everyday go to a simple banana leaf
seller named Sridhar Kolavecha. Sridhar
was really materially poor. He just sat on
the ground, on the side of the road and
what he would sell? He would sell banana
bark, the flowers, the leaves, the roots.
He was honest; he was so compassionate
to all living beings that he utilized his
intelligence to somehow or the other
charge as little as possible and get by.
Because he didnât want to cause anyone
any inconvenience. With whatever little
he made, the first thing he would take
half of his profits and use it to worship
the mother Ganga, the Ganges, by taking
that water of the Ganges and offering
it to Krishna. He would offer the pujas
to Ganges and then take that water and
offer it with love to Krishna. So little
Nimai would come to him, âHow much are
these bananas and how much for this
leaves.â And he would give a fair price and
Nimai would say, âI will give you half. Why
do you try to cheat me?â Sridhar said, âI
have given a fair price, if you donât like
my price go somewhere else.â Nimai would
say, âNO! I know a good supplier and when
I find one and I will never go anywhere
else. I will give you half.â And then they
would argue over the price, because half
means Sridhar would take a tremendous
loss. And for 1 paisa loss was practically
everything he had. And after arguing for 2
hours, Nimai would just take the bananas
and say I am not giving you anything, I
am just taking.â And he would just walk
away. Sridhar would smile. But the Lord
loved Sridhar so much that he would come
every day and Kolavecha Sridhar loved
Nimai so much that when it was time for
Niami to be coming Sridahr actually would
be all day sitting with his heart pounding
with anticipation for Nimai to come
to steal his bananas. Just to see that
form, he didnât know he was God, but he
loved him like God. That was his life, his
soul, everything. One day Nimai said to
Kolaveccha Sridhar, âWhy do you worship
Krishna, what is He doing for you? Look
at how poor you are? There are all kinds
of atheists, the worshipers of demigods,
materialistic people, look, they have nice
homes, they have good food, and they
have nice clothes. See your house, is it a

32. 28
house? Itâs a straw hut. I know what goes
on in your night. The straw hut, the roof
leaks and in the monsoon, everything is
wet. You have to sit with a little mbrella.
And there is no furniture. Nothing! All you
have in your whole house is one old dented,
iron pot carrying water. And as far as your
clothes, there are so many holes in your
clothes, and you canât afford needle and
threads, you just take the two sides of
the holes and tie knots. I see at least 20
knots in your clothes. As far as your food
â what do you eat? You are emaciated.
And yet you are always chanting Krishnaâs
names, you are always worshiping Krishna.
What is He doing for you?â
Kolavecha Sridhar, he loved
Krishna, he loved Krishna so much,
he would chant Krishnaâs names all night
long and sometimes, he couldnât contain
himself, he would chant very loudly. And
the neighbors, he would wake them up.
And they would get really angry. They
would scream at him, âSridhar, shut up.â
Sometimes they would get angrier, they
would just take old rotten vegetable, and
they would throw at Sridharâs head and
say, âeat this and be quiet. You must be
crying like this, because you are so hungry.
Its hunger pain! Eat this and go to sleep.â
Sridhar didnât care. His only satisfaction
is pleasing to the Lord.
When Lord Caitanya was saying
like this to the Sridhar, he
replied, âI have been in this world for a
long time. And I have observed. And I
want to tell you my observation. Whether
one is a king, living in the palace, with
magnificent clothes and eating fine foods,
or whether one is a bird which wears
one set of feathers, and lives in a little
nest made of grass, just eating little
berries here and there. I donât see much
difference between the two. Somehow or
the other both have what they need and
time is passing for both of them in the
same way. And they are both essentially
trying to do the same thing. Trying to be
happy! And as far as I could see that God
is supplying for both of them. Whatâs the
difference? I am happy chanting Gods
name. I happy with what I have and I
donât need anything else. And then Nimai
said âShridhar you are a cheater. You
are cheating everyone. You are making
yourself look like a poor beggar to get
peopleâs sympathy, but actually you have a
great treasure. You have immense wealth.
But you are hiding it all just to deceive
us.â âWhat you mean? Whatever you see
is what I haveâ, replied Sridhar. The Lord
said âSomeday I will expose you.â Then
the Lord stole some bananas and walked
away.
Interestingly every single day,
when Sacimata would cook lunch
for Lord Caitanya, Lord would only eat it
on the banana leaf plates that were given
to him by Shridhar. Yes. He would rather
have that then in silver or gold plates. For
him everything that was put on that plate
tasted like nectar, because it was served
on the banana leaf of Shridhar because
they were offered with love.
33. 29
One day in the house of Srivasa
Thakura, Lord Caitanya
MahaprabhusatdownonthebedofVishnu,
He took the form of God and was offering
any benediction to any of his devotees. To
Murari Gupta who was a devotee of Rama,
he showed the form of Lord Rama and
revealed that Murari Gupta in his past
life was Hanuman. And to HaridasThakur,
he manifested his opulent form as Krsna.
Then Lord called for Shridhar. All said
âWho is this Shridhar?â Lord told all the
devotees that, âIt is the middle of the
night so Shridhar will be chanting. Go to
the outskirts and when you hear him, you
will know who he is.â Devotees followed the
instructions of Lord and brought Sridhar
in front of Lord. When they brought him,
the Lord manifested the form of Krsna
and Balaram right before the eyes of
Shridhar. And he said to Shridhar, âAsk
for anything.â Shridhar said, âI am seeing
you I donât want anything else.â
Caitanya Mahaprabhu said, âI want
to give you something. I will give
you an entire kingdom with a beautiful
palace. There is no longer for you to live
in your abject poverty anymore.â
Shridhar said, âI donât want any
kingdom or palace.â
Lord said, âI will give you the 8
mysticsiddhis.Whatyogisperform
tapasya for many lifetimes to achieve; I
will give you these mystical powers.â
Shridhar said, âThat will be a
distraction if I have these powers.
I donât want powers.â
Lord said, âThen I will give you
mukti. No more suffering againâ.
Sridhar said, âDonât tempt me with
these thingsâ.
Lord said, âThen I will give you
elevation to the spiritual worldâ.
Sridhar said, âI donât want that
either.â
Lord said, âYou donât want it. But I
want to give you something. Please
ask.â
Shridhar said, âIf it pleases you
then you can give me this one
benediction. In every birth let me always
in my heart of heart remember the little
form of Nimai who always comes to my
house to steal my bananas. Let me always
be remembering you in that form and
nothing else.â
When he said that, the devotees
began to cry and Lord Caitanya
began to cry. He said, âI grant you the
highest esctasies of pure love foreverâ.
Also after the mass nagara-
sankirtana in protest against the
magistrate Chand Kazi, Lord took a few
of his devotees to Shridharâs house. And
outside the house was that old dented
iron water pot. He used it to for every
purpose. He used it to wash, to drink
from, to clean. And he had already drunk
water from that pot. Lord Caitanya saw
that pot and went into ecstasy. Everyone
was watching. He walked right to the pot,
he picked up that pot and as everyone
was gazing upon the Lord with suspense,
he put the pot to his lips. Then Shridhar
cried out âNo my Lord, I drank from that
pot and it is a dirty old pot.â
34. 30
Itâs a dirty old pot, according to the scriptures, even the most desperate thief in
all of Bengal wouldnât have cast his eye, it was so old and useless. But in front
of everyone, Mahaprabhu drank the water from the pot, He drank it more and more
and KoIavecha Sridhar fell to the ground and said, now I am finished. He is drinking
the water that I have washed myself with and drank from it and Lord Caitanya was in
ecstasy, He was began to cry, He began to chant, He began to dance, He said, âToday
for the 1st time in My life I have tasted the sweet nectar of Krishnaâs love because I
have drank the water of Kolavecha Sridharâs pot.â
LORD IS HUNGRY FOR DEVOTEES LOVE
The Lord wanted to show the world,
1) Offer a leaf: He ate everyday on Sridharâs banana leaf,
2) A fruit: He would steal his bananas every day,
3) A flower: Lord Chatanyaâs most favorite preparation, He would take, He would steal
banana flowers from Sridhar and have banana flower sabji, itâs written about in
the scriptures.
4) And on this day, the water.
Krishna says if you offer Me, a leaf, a flower, fruit or water, I will accept it if it
is with devotion. But Sridhar wasnât even offering it, but Lord is literally hungry
for the love of His devotees. The devotees are longing to serve Krishna and Krishna is
longing for the love of His devotees.
KOLAVECHA SRIDHAR KI JAI!!!!!
35. 31
Once Lord Krsna said that He
had a headache and that the
only thing that could cure Him would
be dust from the feet of His devotee.
So His messenger went and announced
that Krsna had a headache and that He
could be cured only by the dust from His
devoteeâs feet. He approached many, but
everyone said, âOh, if the dust from my
feet touches the head of the Lord, it will
be a great offense. I will go to hell. Iâm not
going to give dust from my feet for the
Lordâs head.â So the messenger became
very discouraged. But Krsna advised him,
âNow you go to Vrindavana, and see what
happens there.â
So the messenger went to
Vrindavana, and immediately all
the gopis surrounded him. âOh, youâve
come from Lord Krsna! How is our Lord?
Please tell us, how is He doing?â
The messenger replied, âThe Lord
has a headache.â
âOh, no! The Lord has a headache.
Oh, no! What can we do?â
Messenger replies, âThe only thing
that will cure Him is the dust
from His devoteeâs feet.â
Immediately they replied, âOh, yes,
yes! Take it, take it all. Take as
much as you want. Take everything.â
The messenger said, âDonât you
know that you could go to hell for
this?â
âWe donât care if we go to hell, as
long as Krsnaâs headache is cured.
We would willingly suffer in hell, for all
Glories of Gopis

eternity, if it gave even a moment of relief to our beloved Krishna!â
So this is loveâpure, selfless love of God. And this should be the aim of life.
This love can be achieved simply by chanting the holy names of the Lord: Hare
Krsna, Hare Krsna, Krsna Krsna, Hare Hare/ Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare
Hare.
43. 39
Once there was a big sacrifice
and all the demigods, sages and
the rishis had assembled together. Great
kings and princes from all directions were
present and Lord Brahma was the priest.
So, before this very holy ceremony of
yagna began, to form the foundation for
the yagna kund, Lord Brahma took a puja
device like an axe & he just hit the ground
very hard, and in the ground there was
an iron chest (box). Everybody was very
much wondering what is this Iron chest?
So Brahma personally opened the iron
chest and in it was a very magnificent, very
beautiful female, beautiful woman. And
immediately all the demigods, and all the
kings and all the princes and many of the
sages all saw her and they wanted to marry
her because she was very beautiful. Even
Lord Brahma was momentarily bewildered
looking at her. So immediately because
so many people were Kshatriyas, they all
started fighting over this beautiful girl.
Brahma pacified all of them saying: âWe
will have a contest of Bhupradakshina;
weâll have a race around the earth planet.
And whoever comes first will get this girl
in marriageâ.
So they were all lined up and they
started running and running &
they were really running fast because
they were motivated. The passion for
attaining this beautiful woman was very
much motivating and they were running
and Rishi Gautama was also there, he
was running, he was very old and he
was a Sadhu. And these were the other
demigods, and princes. So, Rishi Gautama
was huffing and puffing and he was way,
way behind everybody else. As he was
going, as fast as he could, he happened
to pass on a road, a cow that was in the
process of giving birth to a calf. So he
circumambulated the cow three times and
he came back in the opposite direction,
where Lord Brahma, standing there and
waiting to see whoâs going to come first.
He saw Rishi Gautama coming from the
way that was supposed to be the way for
starting the race.
Brahma was feeling very pity
because he was huffing! But
before he could say anything, Rishi
Gautama said: âI won, I wonâ! Everyone
was astonished, âNo! You won by cheating.
Others havenât even started completing
the race. Gautama Rishi said: âNo I won,
I won, I circumambulated a cow that was
giving birth to a calf three times and that
is equal to Bhupradakshinaâ. Everyone
who was present there were looking like,
âWhat he is saying?â But then a celestial
Story of Ahalya :
44. 40
voice spoke from the sky, what heâs
saying is true, circumambulating a cow
that is giving birth to a calf is equal to
circumambulating the whole planet and he
did it three times. So then Lord Brahma
took the beautiful girl from the chest
whose name happened to be Ahalya and
performed the marriage ceremony. They
were duly married and sometime after
the marriage ceremony was complete all
the other participants started coming
back. And when they crossed the line,
there was Indra who won but Brahma
said: âSomebody else has wonâ.
Indra was shocked, âWhat?
What is this nonsenseâ. All the
demigods & the rishis and the kings and
the princes, they all assembled and when
they heard how Gautama Rishi won, they
were angry & said âWe went through all
this trouble running around the earth
and Rishi Gautama just ran around a cow,
this is unfair, he cheated us, he cheated
usâ. Indra felt very insulted & along with
all others; started a war against Rishi
Gautama. So Rishi Gautama asked Brahma
for protection. Lord Brahma said: âLord
Shiva will protect you. He is living at
Brahma-Giri near Panchavati, you go and
make your residence thereâ. So Gautham
Rishi and Ahalya made their residence on
a mountain named Brahma-Giri which is
today at the famous place known as Nasik.
At that time it was called Panchavati.
Rishi Gautama and Ahalya stayed
here happily for a long time.
But Indra could not forget the beauty
of Ahalya & was very determined to get
Ahalya. So Indra plotted a plan. Once when
Rishi Gautama was away from his ashram,
Indra disguised himself as Gautama and
came to the ashram with the intention
of possessing Ahalya. Ahalya could not
recognise Indra and consented to Indraâs
overtures. After mating, Indra tried to
run away fearing the anger of Gautama,
who would come there at any moment.
Just as Indra stepped out of the ashram,
Gautama came and saw him. Indra grew
pale with fear. Gautama saw that Indra
was in his (Gautamaâs) disguise and after
seeing Indraâs pale face he understood
what had happened. He cursed him:
âLustful beast as you are, dead to all truth
and righteousness, may your manhood fall
away from you.â Indra at once became
a eunuch and went back to the Devas in
shame. Then the sage turned to his erring
wife and cursed her to lose all her beauty
& to become a stone. He also prescribed
a long penance for her. He said: You shall
stay here as a stone, unseen by anyone.
After a long time, Dasarathaâs son will
pass this way. When he sets foot in this
ashram, you will be freed from the curse.
Welcome him as a guest. You will then
recover your lost virtue and get back
your own beauty.â The sage then left his
violated ashram for Himalayas to engage
himself in austerities there.â
Later after several years, Sage
Vishwamitra along with Rama and
Lakshmana, while on the way to Mithila,
passed this ashram. The ashram had
become like a forest so Rama inquired
from Vishwamitra about this ashram.
Sage Vishwamitra told them Ahalyaâs
story. Rama and Lakshmana entered the
ashram and saw that the stone-Ahalya.
Lord touched His feet on the stone &
immediately, Ahalya gave up the stone-
body & became very beautiful as she was
earlier. Ahalya was happy to meet Lord
Ram & thus, she was released from the
curse of Gautama Rishi.

Once Sri Sri Radha Shyamsundar
along with all the sakhis, came
to the bank of a most beautiful pond.
This pond was surrounded by different
kinds of flower gardens and its aroma
was intoxicating. Radha and Krishna
sat on a jeweled seat with Their sakhis
surrounding Them, looking upon the forms
of the Divine Couple like cataka birds.
At this time one bumblebee came
inside the kunja and was trying
to sit on the ear of Radharani. Radha was
very much frightened by this. Sri Krishna
said to Her, âLet madhukara drink Your
madhu. Why are You so scared?â When
Madhumangala saw that this bumblebee
was disturbing Radharani, he chased the
bee away and came back to the kunja.
Madhumangala said, âNow Madhusudana
has gone away from here.â
âMadhuâ means honey and
âMadhusudhanaâ is another name
of Krishna. By saying âMadhusudhana has
gone away,â Madhumanagal meant that
the bumblebee had gone away. However,
Radharani mistook his words to mean that
Krishna had gone away. When She heard
this, She was immediately immersed in
an ocean of sorrow. All the symptoms of
prema manifested within Her. She lost
external consciousness, and even though
She was sitting beside Sri Krishna, all
the symptoms of separation from Her
beloved manifested in Her body. Though
so close to Him, Sri Radha was not able to
see Him. Radharani cried, âO lotus-eyed
one! O Vidagdha-sekhara! O Shyamala-
sundara! Why have u gone away, leaving
me alone here? O Rasikavara! You are
most dear to My life. I am avala (without
strength). Without You I cannot live for
a moment!â
Sri Krishna was surprised to see
this condition of Radharani. His
ocean of love also started to overflow.
He could not see Radharani for His tears.
Radha was crying, âKrishna! Krishna!â, and
Krishna was crying, âRadha! Radha!â From
Their eyes tears constantly flowed, and
from Their bodies sweat began to flow
profusely,soakingthegroundaroundThem.
The tears and sweat combined, flowing
into the pond. It swelled and swelled,
overflowing its bank. The sakhis were
surprised to see both Radha and Krishna
fainting and lying on the ground. Seeing
this, the sakhis also lost consciousness.
From their perch in a nearby tree,
Shuka (Krishnaâs parrot) and
Shari (Radharaniâs parrot) starts to make
different sounds of distress at the sight
before them. Shuka was calling, âKrishna!
Krishna!â and Shari was calling, âRadha!
Radha!â When Radhaâs name enterd into
theearofKrishna,andwhenKrishnaâsname
enterd into the ear of Radharani, They
both regained external consciousness.
Turning to each other, They
embraced, blissful at being
âtogetherâ again.
Hearing the names of Radha and
Krishna, the sakhis also came
back to consciousness and were happy to
see Radha and Krishna happily enjoying
each otherâs presence.
This pond is known as Prema
Sarovara, the liquid prema of the
Divine Couple, Sri Sri Radha-Krishna.
51. 47
This is a very confidential story.
Krishna is always thinking
ofSrimati Radharani and feeling acute
pangs of sepration from her. In a dreaming
condition or waking condition, He calls
out, âRadhe, Radhe, Radhe, Radhe.â As the
gopis faint, Krishna also faints sometimes;
especially when He thinks of Radharani.
Once, Krishna was deeply thinking
of Radharani. Feeling acute pangs
of sepration from Her, He fainted. He
was completely unconscious. After some
time, as if by providential arrangement,
Narada Rishi and Uddhava appeared there
and saw Krishna lying unconscious. Narada
and Uddhava were very dear to Krishna.
They know everything and so they could
understand why this condition had come.
As prema-bhaktas they could understand
that Krishna was about to disclose some
very mysterious lila; therefore He had
come to such a condition â Krishnaâs acute
pangs of separation from Radha, radha-
viraha-vidhura krsna.
Narada and Uddhava were in
anxirty. How could they get
back Krishnaâs consciousness? Just then
Balaram arrived there and the three of
them contemplated what to do. They came
to the conclusion that if Narada Muni
were to sing the glories of Vrajbhumi with
his vina-yantra â Narada muni bajaye vina
radhika raman name â then Krishna would
get back His consciousness and wake up.
Narada said, âAll right. I agree.
But I have one apprehension.
As soon as Krishna wakes up, what will
happen? Donât you know? Immediately
He will run to Vrajbhumi. He is mad now.
He will not wait for anyone. Sa a chariot
should be prepared.â Then they called
Daruka, Krishnaâs chariot driver, and told
him to prepare Krishnaâs chariot.
At that time Uddhava became very
grave. After careful deliberation
he said, âYou are correct. But as far
as I have understood, the condition of
Vrajbhumi is such that if Krishna goes
there now and hears the piteous crying
of the vrajvasis, He will not be able to
tolerate it. Then the consequences will be
more precarious. We will not be able to
get Krishna back. There will be no hope
at all.â
Then Narada said to Uddhava, âO
Uddhava, you are Krishnaâs very
good messenger. You are verydear to Him.
So I think you should go to Vrajbhumi
ffirst and just inform all the vrajvasisi

that Krishna is coming from Dwarka. Then
they will prepare themselves to welcome
Him.â
Hearing this, Uddhava became
morose. He said, âI accept
whatever you say on my head; I have no
objection. When such elevated vaishnava
devotees are requesting me, I cannot
refuse. But I have one thing to say. You
may already know about this. My friend,
Lord Krishna, once sent me to Vrajbhumi
fromMathura.Iwentthereasamessenger
and stayed for three months. I had gone
there to give some consolation to Nanda
Maharaja, Yashoda-mata, the gopis and
Radharani. They were feeling the acute
pangs of sepration from Krishna. But what
onsolation could I give them? My language
failed, my mission failed.they were crying
for Krishna day and night, twenty-four
hours. At last, I told them, âI am going
back to Mathura and I will try my best to
send Krishna to Vrajbhumi immediately.â
I had given my word to them, but until
now it has not taken place. Now after so
many months and years, if I go again in
Vrajbhumi and speak like this, they will
never put their faith in my words. âNo.
You are a liar, Uddhava. You had promised
us this before, but Krishna did not come
back.â They will never put faith in my
words. Rather, they will scold me like a
cheater. So how can I go?â
Considering all these things from
different angels of vision, Narada
and Uddhava requested Balaram, âIt is
better that You go.â
Then Balaram, feeling acute pain in
His heart, spoke in a voice filled
with great sorrow, âNarada, you see, I
would go to Vrajbhumi, not waiting for
anyone. But please consider this: Your
Lord Krishna always says, âYes, Iâll go, Iâll
go, Iâll go.â But He is not actually going to
Vrajbhumi. He is only procrastinating. I
have been to Vrajbhumi and I have seen
the condition of the vrajavasis. I stayed
there for two months and I also failed
to console them. I tried to tell them,
âPlease have patience. Donât feel so much
distress. Krishna will be coming soon.â
But their condition is like that of a fish
out of water. I understood clearly that
without the presence of Krishna nothing
would give them consolation. They cannot
survive at all. It is as if they are dying,
feeling pangs of sepration from Krishna.
And still Krishna has not gone there.
âKrishnaâs presence would be a
soothing balm for them. They would
get back their life. Especially Yashoda-
53. 49
mata. She is always crying. I touched
her lotus feet and said, âMother, as soon
as I reach Dwarka, I will make my best
effort to send Krishna to Vrajbhumi.
Please wait for some days, mother.â I
have given my word to mother Yashoda.
But what happened? I requested, âMy
dear brother Krishna, please go to
Vrajbhumi immediately, otherwise they
will all die. Give up all Your work here.
Suspend everything and go to Vrajbhumi.â
I requested Krishna many times. âPlease,
make them survive. Your presence will be
like a soothing balm; the medicine to save
their lives. Otherwise their lives will get
out.â I requested Him many times.
âPreviously, Krishna would
immediately carry out whatever
request I made. But He has not carried
out this request. He only says, âYes, Iâll
go. Iâll go.â But He has not gone until now.
O Narada, you are all knowing. So please
tell me, if I were to go to Vrajbhumi
what would I tell mother Yashoda? I have
already promised her that Krishna would
come to Vrajbhumi. What shall I say?
Will she put faith in my words? She will
never put faith in my words. Rather, she
will say, âBalaram, you are a liar.ââ
Thinking of the condition of
vrajavasis, Balaram felt such
pain in his heart. He said, âAlas! My dear
vrajavasis, are you still surviving? O my
dear Krishna. My brother, Your heart is
as soft as a butter, navanita-hrdaya. Hoe
strange it is that such a soft heart has
become as hard as a block of stone.â
Sayingthis,Baladevacouldnolonger
suppress His mood and He began
to cry. At that time, Subhadra appeared
there. She is very intelligent. âAll right,â
She said, âI will go to Vrajbhumi. I will go
first. All of you please be patient and give
up your anxiety. Iâll go to Vrajbhumi and
sit on the lap of mother Yashoda. Iâll wipe
the tears from her eyes and say, âO my
mother! Krishna is coming just now. My
two brothers and I started from Dwarka
simultaneously, but along the road many
people has assembled just to greet Him.
They have constructed big gates. So
many kings, maharajas, are standing at
the roadside. Innumerable people are
carrying arati plates just to offer puja
to Krishna. So He is coming a bit later. I
came in advance just to give you this good
news, âHe is coming! Krishna is coming!â
Similarly I will go to each gopi,
wipe the tears from their eyes
and console them. I will tell them, âMale
persons are a little crooked. But we
females are very simple.â I am a woman.
So when they hear from me that Krishna
is coming, they will put faith in my words.
Then all the vrajavasis will become very
blissfulandmakearrangementstoobserve
a great festival to welcome Krishna.â
Uddhav, Narada and Balaram
agrees unanimously. âYes, this
is a very good proposal.â Subhadra said,
âPlease prepare my chariot.âOne chariot
had already been prepared for Krishna
and now another chariot was prepared for
Subhadra. Baladeva has great affection
for Vrajbhumi, so when he saw Subhadra
was ready to get into chariot, he said,
âHow can I allow my dear brother Krishna
to go alone? No. I must go. Subhadra is
going, so I will go with her.â
Uddhava agreed, âAllright, both of
you will go.When you start your
journey on the chariot, we will not make
54. 50
any delay. As soon as you leave, Narada
Muni will sing vraja-lila kahani with his
vina-yantra. Then Krishna will regain His
consciousness and we will send Him along
immediately.
Balaram and Suhadra got up into
their chariots and started for
Vrajbhumi.FirstBalramandthenSubhadra.
At the time of Ratha-yatra, Baladevaâs
ratha goes first, then Subhadraâs ratha
follows. This is the procedure. Three
rathas are decorated and Krishna will get
up and go last.
As soon as the two rathas started
out, Narada began to play his
vina-yantra. When this transcendental
sound vibration touched Krishnaâs ears, He
became conscious again and immediately
stood up in three curved way, tri-bhangima
thani. That three-fold bending form is not
in Dwarka. That form is only in Vrajbhumi.
In Dwarka Krishna is a king in royal dress.
He is not bent in three places, He has no
flute, and He wears no peacock feather.
These are only in Vrajbhumi. Because He
was only thinking of Vrajbhumi, at once
He became tri-bhanga. That was His only
dream nad His only thought; no thought
of Dwarka.
Immediately Krishna said, âWhere
is my flute? Where is my flute?â
there is no flute in Dwarka. âWhere is my
flute? Who stole my flute? Oh, this must
be the work of those gopis. They have
stolen My flute.â Saying this, He started
to run to find His flute. But then He saw
Uddhava and said, âHe Uddhava! Why
are you in Vrajbhumi?â then, in the next
moment He saw Narada, âO Narada, you
are here in Vraja?â Then He came to His
senses. âIs this not Vrajbhumi?â
Both Uddhava and Narada said, âO
my Lord, we knew You would run
to Vrajbhumi, therefore we have already
prepared a chariot for You. Please get
into the chariot.â Then Krishna, whos is
always thinking of Radharani, became like
a madman. Krishna had become intoxicated
like a drunkard. With much difficulty,
Narada and Uddhava caught hold of Him
and placed Him on the chariot. So when
Jagannath comes to the chariot during
the Ratha-yatra festival, He is in that
intoxicated condition, shaking and waving.
In Jagganath Puri one can see how He is
carried to the chariot in this condition.
Then Narada ordered Daruka to
drive the chariot to Vraja and
Daruka drove off as swiftly as the wind.
In the meantime, Baladevaâs chariot and
SubhadraâschariothadreachedVrajbhumi.
Arrivinf in Vraja, Baladeva saw that all the
inhabitants of Vrajbhumi were as if dying,
feeling acute pangs of separation from
Krishna. Baladeva thought very deeply, âO
vrajvasis, how are you surviving?â Such an
ecstatic mood manifested on the body of
55. 51
Baladeva â shedding tears, perspiration
and hairs standing on end and the mood
in his heart manifested outside. That is
the form you will see in Nilachal Dham.
Then the same transformation also took
place in Subhadra as soon as she saw the
condition of the residents of Vrajbhumi.
So Subhadra could not go to Yashoda-
mata because she had become completely
ecstatic, mahabahava-prakasha. Now she
is completely forgetful. The sweetness of
the mellow of Vraja islike an ocean and
these two forms were like drowning in
that ocean.
On other hand, while all this is
going on, Radharaniâs condition
has gradually worsene, just like dying
condition. All Her sakhis became doubtful
as to whether there was life in Radharaniâs
body. The whole of Vrajbhumi was in
complete anxiety, âRadharani is giving up
Her body. She cannot survive.â Her ashta-
sakhis were sitting all around Her. They
could not understand what to do. Lalita
and Vishkha were very restless. They
were singing the name of Krishna in the
ears of Radha.
In the meantime, the whole of
Vrajbhumihadcometherebecause
the word had spread that Radharani was
dying. Crying and crying, with tears in
his eyes, Ayana Ghosh, Abhimanyu who is
known as the husband of Radharani. This
is only outward, not true. Radharaniâs real
husband is Krishna. Putting his head on
the lotus feet of Radharani, he bathed
Her lotus feet with his tears.
Then came Kutils, Ayana Ghoshâs
sister. She is sister- in- law of
Radharani. Crying and sheding tears,
Kutila put her head on the lotus feet
of Radharani. She took some dust from
Radhaâs lotus feet and put in on her head.
With a choked voice she said, âO Radhe,
I had a great pride. Yes, as great as a
skyscraper. I was always proclaiming, âI
am the only chaste lady. There are no
there chaste ladies in Vrajbhumi. All are
prostitutes.â I used to say that and I have
tried my best to prove You are always
running to Krishna. So I have tried my
best to prove that You are most unchaste
and that I am the most Chaste.
âBut once a very mysterious
thing happened. One day Krishna
manifested a jvara-lila, as if He was
very sick with a high fever. Krishna was
overcome with a disease, sannyasa roga.
âI will give up everything and take up
sannayas.â This fever had come. All were
in anxiety, âHow will it be cured? What is
the medicine for You?â
56. 52
âOh yes. I know a medicine.â
âWhat is that medicine?â
âIf there is some pure and chaste
lady, only she can supply the medicine.
Let her go to Yamuna carrying a pot that
has hundreds of holes. If she can bring
back some water from the Yamuna in that
pot, not a single drop of water falls down,
then that is the medicine. If you put it on
My body, I will be cured of this fever.ââ
Kutila continued, âAll decided that
I was the most chaste lady. I was
always beating drums and proclaiming,â I
am the most chaste lady and all others
are unchaste.â So they said, âAll right. Call
her and give her that pot with hundreds
of holes. Let her bring water from Yamuna
without spilling a single drop.â But when I
tried to do it, all the water poured out.
That proved that I was not chaste at all.
Kutila admitted, âIt was proved;
my pride was completely crushed.
That is why Krishna manifested such a
lila, to crush my pride.â
âThen Radharani was called. âLet us
give that pot to Radharani. Let Her
bring water.â When Radharani went to
Yamuna to fetch water, although the pot
had hundreds of holes not a single drop
fell out.â
Kutila continued, âSo it was proved
to the whole world that You are
the real chaste lady, not I. Yoga Maya
had created that lila to crush my pride. O
Radhe, my pride was crushed, but today I
am very proud to have had the opportunity
to take some dust from Your lotus feet.
My life has become successful today.â
Then, from another direction,
Chandravali came running. She
was followed by her sakhis headed by
Saibya. Chandravali came and fell flat,
putting her head on the lotus feet of
Radharani. Washing the lotus feet of
Radharani with the tears from her eyes,
she said, âRadhe, I am the most condemned
person in Vrajbhumi. It is not You who are
condemned, but I.â
Everyone says, âOh, She is a
prostitute. On the plea of fetching
water She went to the Yamuna only to
mix with Krishna.â Who is not going to
the Yamuna to fetch water? Everyone
is going. But when Radha goes, suddenly
She becomes a prostitute.â They accuse
Radharani in this way, but Chandravali
said, âNo, I am condemned. You are not
57. 53
condemned, O Radharani. Sri Krishna is
Your real husband. You are a leftist, so
sometimes Krishna goes to my kunja just
to increase Your leftist mood. That is my
good fortune. In that way, Iâm related to
You. Sometimes Krishna goes to my kunja,
but He is not happy with me. He is only
happy with You. Even in dreams, He only
thinks of You. He never thinks of me.
This is all lila created by Yoga Maya. Yoga
Maya has made everyone dance here in
Vrajbhumi. And, for pleasure of Krishna,
in whatever way she made us dance, we
all danced. I know it very well. Everyone
here is engaged in noursishing the lila of
Krishna, nothing else. Today I am very
fortunate that I could put my head at
Your lotus feet, O Radharani. But today I
heard that You were in dying condition. If
You give up But today I heard that You
were in dying condition. If You give up our
body then no one in this Vrajabhumi will
survive, O Radhe, not even a single animal.
Everyone will die. Then Krishna will never
come to Vrajabhumi and we will never see
Krishna again. Please donât die.â
Just at that moment, Krishnaâs
chariot reached Vrajabhumi. As
soonas Krishna arrived in Vraja, He jumped
down from His chariot. Yoga Maya was
manifesting another lila. As if providential
arrangement,KrishnaappearedinNidhuvan
where Radharani was lying as if dead.
Krishna ran there, and from His mouth
the words were coming, âradhe, radhe,
dehi-pada-pallavam udaramâ, - âO Radhe!
O Radhe! Please give Me Your lotus feet.
I want to place them on My head.â Krishna
feeling acute pangs of sepration from
Radharani, became completely ecstatic.
His hands and legs were pushed into the
body. He became like a tortoise. This is a
form of Jagannath. With big dilated eyes
He was only gazing at Radharani, who was
lying there in the kunja as if dead. Seeing
Her condition, He lost His consciousness
and fell to the ground. In that form He is
feeling the acute pangs of sepration from
Radha. That is the form of Jagannath,
Radha-bhava sindhure bhasamana, as if
He is a log of wood floating in the ocean
of radha-bhava.
The wind blowing over the
transcendental body of Krishna
when touched the body of Radharani,
who was just about to die, it acted like a
soothing balm. Radharaniâs life returned
immediately. In a very sweet voice,
Srimati Lalita whispered in the ear of
Radharani, âKrishna has come.â When She
heard this, Radharani gradually opened
Her eyes to see Her prana-vallabha, most
beloved Krishna. Now She had forgotten
everything. All the pangs of sepration
have completely gone. But Krishna is still
unconscious in this tortoise-like form.
Seeing Krishna in this condition, Srimari
Radhika gave direction to Her priya
sakhi, Vishakha, âPlease help Krishnaâ. And
Vishakha knows what medicine to apply. In
a very sweet voice she started to chant
the name, âRadhe, Radhe, Radhe,â in the
ears of Krishna. Hearing this, Krishna
regained His consciousness and opened
His eyes. Krishna looked at Radharani
and Radharanoi looked at Shyama-sundar,
Krishna. Then everyone forgot the past
condition. Where is Dwarka? Where are
Krishnaâs pangs of sepration? And where
is Srimati Radharaniâs viraha? All these
things have now gone. And Radha and
Krishna were happily performing there
lila in Nidhuvan-kunj.
This is Jagannath-vigraha, radha-
viraha vidhura, Krishna feeling
58. 54
intense separation from Radha. In the
form of a log of wood, He is floating in the
ocean of radha-bhava which is in the heart
of Radharani. Chaitanya Mahaprabhu is
krsna-viraha-vidura and Jagannath is
radha-viraha-vidura. Two crying forms in
Jagannath Puri â Chaitanya Mahaprabhu
in the mood of Radharani, crying for
Krishna, and Jagannath is Krishna, crying
for Radha.
Then Krishna told Radha, âMy
brother Balaram and My sister
SubhadrahelpedMetocometoVrajabhumi
so that we could be united. Therefor I
will take them with Me in the forms they
assumed upon coming to Vrajabhumi. In
these forms, we three shall stay eternally
in Nilachal, Jagannath Puri Dham.â
So this is why Jagannath, Baladeva
and Subhadra reside eternally in
Jagannath Puri Dham and why They have
appeared in the form of daru-brahma,
three logs of wood floating in the ocean
of radha-prema.

One day Lord Chaitanya decided
to fulfill all the devoteesâ
desires and He actually manifested as the
Supreme Personality of Godhead. As their
4 handed worship able lord. Devotees were
so much astonished. The lord in Srivas
Thakurs house began kirtan in the spirit
of his own devotee chanting Krishnaâs
names and he told everyone to sing the
abhishekam song. Devotees knew exactly
what he wanted. He was giving a chance
to do abhishek. Then Lord Chaitanya
called each one of his devotees whoever
and personally revealing to them the
Lord they worshipped till now. He called
Kolabecha Sridhar, who was a cowherd boy
in Vrindavan. Kolabecha Sridhar looked up
at Lord Chaitanya and he saw beautiful
form of Krishna in Vrindavan, dark like a
tamal tree holding his flute in his hand and
on the other said this beautiful form of
Balaramji. He had the darshan of Krishna
Balaram. He called Murari Gupta, who was
Hanuman in his previous life and said look
at me Murari. He saw the wonderful form
of Lord Rama, complexion of Durva grass,
holding a beautiful bow in his hands,
Sita and Laxman besides him. He was in
complete ecstacy. Then he looked down
and he saw he had a tail. He turned into
Hanuman. Then he turned unconscious.
So in this way he was fulfilling everyoneâs
desires, giving everyone benediction. Ask
anything. But then night was coming to an
end and he didnât even look at the direction
of Mukunda. Devotees are para dukha
dukhi. Their happiness is another personâs
happiness and their sorrow is another
personâs sorrow, especially those of
devotees. So Srivas Pandit, even though he
had already seen the Supreme Personality
of Godhead from Lord Chaitanyaâs body
as Krishna, as Rama, everyone was in
bliss but at the same time everyone was
suffering because Mukunda Dutta was
not getting special mercy. So, Mukunda
was weeping behind some pillar because
neglect is very very great suffering to
heart when you love someone. So Srivas
said to the Lord, âMukunda Dutta, he is
ignored by you. Please call him forward.
Give him your mercy. He is weeping. He is
crying.â Lord Chaitanya became angry as
fire. He said âdonât you ever take the side
of that wretched Mukundaâ. Srivas was
shocked. All the devotees were shocked.
It was like thunderbolt in their heart.
Glories of Mukunda Dutta!
62. 58
He said âMy Lord, Mukunda has given his
everything, his life and soul to serve you
to please. He sings kirtan for the whole
assembly of devotees in transcendental
ecstacy. If he has done something wrong,
please forgive him. What could he have
possibly done?â
âThat rascal Mukunda, You have
heard his name. If someone, puts
straw in between the teeth and possess
with great humility and then beat on your
head with a cloth; that is Mukunda. He
is with the Vaishnavas. When he is here,
he is talking about Krishna, singing and
dancing about Krishna and when he goes
to the ordinary people he goes personless.
He speaks what they say. They are peeling
the body of the Lord. Therefore Mukunda
coming before Me with folded hands and
straw in his teeth then he beats me on the
head with cloth. I will never allow him to
see me. So Mukunda was devastated. He
heard every word and he was practically
dead in grief. He was weeping and crying
and wailing. I will never see the Lord I will
never see the Lord.
It is explained by Vrindavan das
ThakurthatactuallywhenMukunda
was young, he was led by one Brahman to
meet all different kinds of people but
after he became a devotee he never did
that.Hecameintoassociationofdevotees.
But Lord Chaitanya was a Parmatama in
the heart. He can understand everything
that we have ever done. And ultimately he
wanted to show the glories of Mukunda.
So Mukunda was weeping âWill I ever see
the Lord again? I will never be able to see
him again.â
Then Srivas asked the lord
âMukunda wants to know will he
ever be able to see you again.â And Lord
Chaitanya said in thunderous voice, âHe
will see me after 10 million births.â Those
words splashed Mukunda dutta with bliss.
He started dancing in ecstacy with tears
of love flowing from his eyes. He was
dancing so much. âI will see. I will. I will.
Only 10 million birthsâ he was dancing
very happily.
Lord Chaitanya was so pleased. He
was pleased with Mukunda Dutta
there. He was so humble and grateful.
He thought if I had to wait 10 million
years then that is absolutely nothing.
Thatâs absolutely insignificant. When I
think of get darshan of supreme Lord,
I am so fallen. I am so insignificant but
he with such a causeless mercy is giving
darshan after 10 million births. He had
such faith in the lordâs words. Therefore
he was dancing splashing ecstasy. He was
drowning in the ocean of ecstasy. âI will
see. I will seeâ. He was dancing all over
the place. Lord Chaitanya said bring him
here to see me immediately. So devotees
63. 59
went to Mukunda and said, âLord wants to see you immediately. The Lord wants to see
you immediately. Come!â
But Mukunda was in another world of ecstasy thinking about only 10 million births
that he didnât even hear that. He was just â10 million births. I will see. I will
see.â Devotees were saying âCome! Come!â But he couldnât hear. They had to pick him
up and carry him near Lord. And when he saw the Lord, all of his hearts desires were
ultimately fulfilled. Then Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu requested Mukunda Dutta to
offer him prayers. And he said âMy Lord unless one has pure devotion they cannot find
any more happiness even if they see you. I donât understand Krishna. I have no devotion.
But in my heart I am happy as if I am seeing you. This is your causeless mercy. I had
no devotion in my heart, but still I felt happiness by seeing you. I am worthless as
the pyre of ashes. My only hope is your causeless mercy. Only who have true complete
unconditional devotion can find satisfaction on seeing you. Only to one who has devotion,
you reveal yourself as you are.â Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu was so pleased by hearing
this description of pure devotional service that he said, âEverything you are saying is
perfect Mukunda Dutta. Because you have pure devotion, therefore you understand
this. What you are saying is the absolute truth. The only real happiness comes through
devotion. I am the prisoner in the heart of that person who has devotion to me. Mukunda
dutta I give you this benediction that whenever you chant the holy name, the hearts
of all devotees will completely melt in pure ecstatic love to Me. You will always be in
association of My devotees. And whenever I incarnate in this world you will be with me
chanting the holy names.

Once King Parikshit asked --------
that was there any devotee at
the time of Pandavas who was as glorious
as Them or as devoted as Them to Sri
Krishna. So, -------- said, âYes! There was
one devotee who was a very great devotee
of Lord. His name was King Mayurdhwaj.
He was a King of Ratnanagar. Once
Mayurdhwajâs son, Tamradhwaj, defeated
Arjuna in fight and took away the horse
of Yudhishtir Maharaj which he was going
to offer in Ashwamedh yagya.
King Mayurdhwaj was very devoted
to Lord and in his day to day life
would spend his maximum time in hearing
the pastimes of Lord. It was his very
strong desire that one day Lord of his
heart should come to his kingdom. But
upon receiving the news from his son,
King Mayurdhwaj was very upset and he
began to weep incessantly upon his sonâs
Glories of King MayurDhwaj !!!!

mistake. He was sure of some great calamity to come.
Meanwhile, Arjuna being defeated by a mere young boy was very unhappy n was
really upset about how such a thing could be possible. As Arjuna was thinking
so, Krishna told that it was only possible because of devotion of King Mayurdhwaj. To
prove it to Arjuna, Krishna disguised Himself as a Brahman and Arjuna as his disciple.
They went to the kingdom of Mayurdhwaj.
Mayurdhwaj, being a great Vaishnava, offered very nice hospitality with great
love n attention to the Brahman and his disciple. Being a King, he wanted to
offer some charity to the Brahman but Brahman said that whatever charity he wanted,
king was not capable to give it. Hearing this, King Mayudhwaj took vows n promised to
give whatever this Brahman asks in charity. Now, being satisfied, Brahman said, âOk!
Listen carefully what I want.â
Brahman said âWhile I was passing through the forest with my son to come here,
i was blocked by a lion that caught my son. I tried my best to save him but I
could not rescue my son. Seeing my condition, lion said that if I want my son back then
I should bring your half body as his meal. Lion also said that let the son of the king cut
his body into two n then bring me the left side of the kingâs body.â
Hearing this, Mayurdhwaj readily agreed to give his half body to the Brahman
in charity but Tamradhwaj n kings wife began to cry n thought this to be the
most impossible task to be done. But Mayurdhwaj explained them that how important it
was as he had already vowed to give whatever this Brahman asks in charity. Mayurdhwaj
requested Tamradhwaj to fulfill this desire.
Keeping stone on his heart, Tamradhwaj started cutting his fatherâs body in two
halves. Just then, seeing tears coming down from kings eyes, Brahman said, âI
find that you are in a great sorrow. I do not wish to accept a charity which is not given
whole-heartedly.â Hearing this, Mayurdhawaj explained the Brahman that his tears
were not because he was in sorrow. He was crying as his only half part could be used in
the service of devotees of Lord and rest half would be useless.
When Arjuna heard these words of the King, he at once resumed his original
form and began to beg forgiveness from the King and Lord too. He understood
very clearly the greatness of Mayurdhwaj n his love for Lord. Understanding that the
Lord of his heart was in his kingdom, Mayurdhwaj at once offered his obeisanceâs to
the Lord and begged forgiveness. Lifting up the king, Lord embraced Mayurdhwaj and
showered profuse mercy upon the king. Tamradhwaj begged forgiveness from Arjuna
and returned the horse back.
