Syrah, also known as Shiraz, originated in France but is now grown worldwide. It produces full-bodied, high tannin wines characterized by blackberry, dark chocolate, and pepper flavors. In France, it produces wines ranging from mineral styles in Hermitage to fruitier wines in Côte-Rôtie. It was introduced to Australia in 1832 and is now their most popular red grape, particularly in Barossa Valley where it produces potent, dense wines. Shiraz pairs well with robust foods like barbecue and curries.
