Ship Island is a barrier island located off the coast of Mississippi in the Gulf of Mexico. It is approximately 10 miles long and has served various purposes over the years including use as a military fortification during the American Civil War. Today, Ship Island is undeveloped and managed as a natural wildlife refuge under the jurisdiction of Gulf Islands National Seashore.
