The document analyzes how a trailer for the film "Eve" both conforms to and challenges conventions of real film trailers. The trailer begins conventionally by displaying the production company logo. It includes voiceover and subtitles to explain the narrative, slow pacing of scenes to set tone, and shows other associated production companies. However, it challenges conventions by having a young girl as the monster rather than a male, not concealing the monster's identity, and including on-screen text rather than just voiceover to convey the narrative. The trailer switches between following and challenging conventions to both draw in viewers familiar with standard trailers but also intrigue them with unique elements.

For the first trailer, the student summarizes the effective use of changing soundtracks and dialogue to shift the tone from happy to tense. They also note the use of lighting and costumes. For the second trailer, they comment on the setting, costumes, and camera angles, but find it less compelling than the first. Areas they would repeat include the first trailer's soundtracks and final fight scene. They would exploit transitions in their own trailer.
This document provides an analysis of two soap opera trailers: Hollyoaks and EastEnders. For each trailer, the analysis examines the verbal codes of dialogue and soundtrack, non-verbal codes of setting, lighting, costumes and expressions, and technical codes of camera angles and shots. Strengths identified for exploitation include diegetic sounds in Hollyoaks that build intrigue, and upbeat soundtracks in EastEnders that emphasize drama. Repeated strengths would be quick cuts in Hollyoaks and happy music/end text in EastEnders that create interest and want to watch. Minimal locations, costumes/props and lack of voiceovers allow clear narratives for audiences to interpret.
The music in the trailer instantly sets an adventurous tone that makes the viewer want to watch the film. The language used in the trailer conforms to comedy genre conventions by being comical. The editing at the end of the trailer challenges conventions by speeding up clips rather than showing them, as comedy trailers typically do. The target audience for the trailer is ages 15 and up due to mild language and sexual references, and it would mainly appeal to women as the characters are primarily female, making it a "chick flick comedy."
The document analyzes the movie trailer for Bridesmaids. It summarizes that the trailer effectively conveys the movie's genre as a comedy/romance through its revealing title, focus on female characters and a wedding plot. It also establishes the target audience as young adult females through comedic snippets, natural lighting and casting well-known comedy actresses. The mise-en-scene, costumes, settings and camerawork portray conflicts between characters to further amusement.

The student identifies strengths in each trailer that they want to repeat or exploit in their own trailer, such as dramatic dialogue, intense soundtracks, facial expressions showing tension, and camera techniques like zooms and cuts that build suspense. Areas to improve include avoiding low lighting that makes characters unclear.
The trailer uses effective camera work, editing, lighting, sound, and props to create suspense without revealing too much of the plot. It begins by establishing a normal setting but gradually shifts to darker lighting and handheld shots that make the viewer feel engaged yet unsure of what will happen. Fast pacing and brief shots maintain mystery around the antagonist while close-ups of characters' scared reactions heighten tension. Throughout, conventional horror trailer techniques like distorted sound, blurred images and a building sense of dread leave the audience wanting to learn more.
The trailer for the horror film 'Sinister' effectively promotes the supernatural subgenre through its use of appropriate horror iconography and technical codes. It establishes normality by showing a happy family who recently moved, then creates intrigue by revealing disturbing footage the protagonist discovered. Through quick cuts, it builds tension by depicting possessed children threatening the family. The trailer concludes by displaying the film title and release date to inform viewers.

The document analyzes the trailer for the 2005 horror film "The Exorcism of Emily Rose". It discusses how the trailer effectively uses conventions to appeal to the target supernatural horror audience. It signals the film's supernatural subgenre through religious imagery, the possessed teenage protagonist, and scenes set in isolated locations. The trailer also uses non-diegetic text and a narrative structure to draw viewers in and leave them wanting more without revealing too much of the plot. Character representations further set the serious, tense tone. Camerawork establishes the rural setting and builds tension through close-ups.
The trailer begins by establishing the film as a slasher genre piece, showing a young screaming woman and the words "family massacre". It then introduces Michael Myers as a young boy in the back of a police car, hinting at exploring his traumatic background. Fast-paced editing and a heartbeat soundtrack build tension. Shots of Michael holding his mask, stalking a family home, and punishing scenes of sexuality imply he has escaped and is stalking victims. Through its establishing of genre tropes, nonlinear storytelling, and increasing tension, the trailer draws viewers in to learn more about the film's depiction of the iconic killer Michael Myers.

It then introduces Michael Myers as a young boy in the back of a police car, hinting at exploring his traumatic background. Fast-paced editing and a heartbeat soundtrack build tension. Shots of Michael holding his mask, stalking a family home, and engaging in violent acts establish him as the escaped killer. By juxtaposing happy family shots with Michael's looming figure and showing sexually suggestive/violent content, it sets up Michael as punishing transgressive teens in this remake of the classic slasher film.
The trailer establishes the isolated setting of a forest and mountains through establishing shots accompanied by mysterious music. A voiceover hints at a tragedy involving the main character. Shots introduce the seemingly normal main character and imply something caused his mental breakdown over winter, leading him to kill his family. Tension is built through cuts to black between shots of the character searching with an axe. Later, a family is shown enjoying time in a maze, unaware of the danger, before shots emphasize the threatening nature of the main character through lighting and close-ups. Production details are shown at the end to advertise the film.
The film Saw is a 2004 horror film directed by James Wan. The trailer uses various techniques to establish it as a gory horror film. It features quick cuts and transitions between dark, tense scenes showing victims in peril. Non-diegetic sounds like heartbeats and screams build intensity, while the villain Jigsaw's distorted voice adds mystery. Overlaid text directly tells the audience he is a "madman" and "psychopath" to reinforce the disturbing tone. The trailer effectively uses visuals and audio to draw viewers in and generate fear and suspense around Jigsaw's deadly games.
The document provides an evaluation of various shots and scenes in a movie opening. It summarizes each shot or scene and explains how it establishes elements of genre, story, character, and audience engagement. Key shots included an opening credit sequence with tense music, a dark shot of the tied-up protagonist that creates mystery, transition shots that build tension, a shot of the antagonist in a suit to convey power, a shot of a briefcase to set up the missing object central to the plot, a shot of a hooded villain without dialogue, and a flashback action scene followed by a final shot connecting to the opening and introducing the main conflict. The evaluation analyzes how each shot relates to thriller conventions and moves the story forward
The trailer for the crime thriller film Nine Dead establishes the genre through its use of slow pacing at the beginning to build suspense, dark colors associated with danger, and shots of guns and a masked kidnapper. Throughout the trailer, the pacing increases alongside the growing threat and tension faced by the kidnapped victims. Elements like the soundtrack, voiceover, intertitles, and editing help further immerse the viewer in the thriller plot and leave them wanting to know how the story ends. The trailer effectively conveys the key elements of the film's crime thriller genre to attract fans of that genre.
The document discusses how the media product uses, develops, and challenges conventions of real media genres. It begins by explaining how the author relied on research of crime/thriller conventions to make their own products look professional. All three final products fit the crime/thriller genre by following conventions but also developing them to be unique. Trailers were analyzed as a group to identify conventions to use. The genres of crime and thriller were combined to create intrigue and appeal to a wide audience. Camera angles, shots, dialogue, and other techniques were used that both followed and challenged conventions to engage the target audience.
This document analyzes the genre conventions used in the trailer for Liam Neeson's new action thriller film. It identifies several techniques employed to attract audiences, including the use of star power by casting Liam Neeson, who is known for these roles. Clues are left about the plot to intrigue viewers, such as why the main character is an ex-cop. Elements like guns, car chases, and the damsel in distress trope through a woman in a red coat also align it with the action genre. Editing techniques like changes in sound levels and black and white footage aim to present the film as legendary. The target audience is identified as males and females aged 15 to 30 who enjoy action movies
The document discusses conventions that will be used in the film trailer, such as depicting bullying for comedy through the protagonist's journey. Shots will show social differences between popular and bullied characters. Close-ups will react to uncomfortable situations, and locations like pubs will portray familiar settings to different audiences. The narrative will provide context for scenes and be used for both information and comedy, like in the film Ted. A montage with background music and narrative will introduce characters while maintaining the trailer's flow.
Feature films are full-length movies that audiences pay to see in cinemas. They typically run over 40 minutes, with most being between 75-210 minutes. Feature films follow a three-act structure of introduction, rising action, and resolution to tell a story. Short films have a similar structure but must establish characters and settings immediately without long title sequences due to their shorter time frame. Both feature and short films use techniques like camera work, lighting, music, and character development to effectively communicate their narrative and engage audiences.
The trailer uses various cinematography techniques to build tension and intrigue around the film Creep. It begins with a shaky point-of-view shot to immerse the viewer in the main character's anxiety and uncertainty. Quick cuts introduce multiple characters in dangerous situations while keeping the killer's identity ambiguous. Dark lighting and isolated underground locations establish the scary atmosphere. The trailer leaves viewers wondering if any of the imperiled characters will escape the killer living in the station's tunnels.
The trailer uses a first-person point of view shot to immerse the viewer and create tension. It introduces the main character, a woman alone in an underground station at night. Dark, unsettling lighting and isolated locations are employed to build an ominous atmosphere. Quick cuts show the woman and others in perilous situations, hinting at a threat but not revealing its nature. The title "Creep" leaves the viewer wondering what fate awaits the characters in this scary film.
The trailer uses techniques common to horror films like darkness, isolated settings, and an unknown killer to set up tension and mystery. Shaky camera work and quick cuts establish anxiety and increase the pace. Various shots introduce the main character, other victims, and a disturbing image to confuse and unnerve the audience. While many details are hidden, flashes of violence whet the audience's appetite for what threats and scares may be in store.
The trailer uses a first-person point of view to immerse the audience in the scenario and create anxiety for the main character. Dark, shadowy lighting is used to convey danger and establish the horror genre. The isolated underground station setting traps the characters without help. Quick cuts build tension as the audience sees brief glimpses of a killer and bloody scenes while questions about characters' fates remain unanswered.

Claire is diagnosed with leukemia and given little time to live. The film follows Claire through flashbacks of her life before her diagnosis, portraying her as a typical selfish teenager, and in the present as she comes to terms with her mortality. Through a voiceover, Claire reflects on growing as a person and becoming grateful for what she had. The film concludes with Rachel visiting Claire's grave, paralleling the opening scene. Technical elements like close-ups, lighting, and a nonlinear narrative are used to create an emotional connection between Claire and the audience.
Movie trailer research - Sorcerer's ApprenticeJack Barlow
The document analyzes a trailer for the film "The Sorcerer's Apprentice". It discusses how the montage of location shots at the beginning sets an epic tone and implies a global search. Computer generated effects that allow transformations are highlighted, intended to make the film seem magical and unbelievable. Though there is action, the trailer targets younger audiences through bright colors and portrays the film as more adventurous than an action movie. The villain is established through low camera angles and a quote about power and control, setting up an opposition of good versus evil.
The document provides an analysis of the opening scenes of the thriller film "Cape Fear". It summarizes that the opening reflects different ominous images in a river to introduce the characters. The first character seen is a prisoner with tattoos symbolizing justice, establishing him as someone with unfinished business. Throughout the opening, the film uses lighting, camera shots, music and other techniques to set a mood of danger, mystery and suspense as the main character is released from prison into an approaching storm.
The document summarizes three movie trailers:
1) "Sket" is an urban drama about girls fighting back in a rough neighborhood. The trailer uses quick cuts, music, and dialogue to showcase the violence and sisterhood between the girls.
2) "Oculus" is a horror film about a haunted mirror. The trailer builds suspense through unsteady music, quick cuts that leave scenes unfinished, and dialogue about the mirror's deadly past.
3) "A Fault in Our Stars" is a romantic drama based on a novel. The trailer focuses on the love story between two teens dealing with illness, using emotional music, intimate scenes of the couple, and voiceover about the transcendent nature of

1. What makes an effective
teaser trailer?
By Eldaa, Victoria & Sherai
2. Character
In Columbiana the hero is Zoe Saldana who plays
‘Cataleya’. As the trailer unravels, we understand that
she is seeking revenge after witnessing her parent's
murdered.
In the beginning of the trailer, we see a flash back of a
little girl who has been portrayed innocently. The idea that
she is glaring into the camera with teary eyes, and she is
appeared dressed in her school uniform whilst witnessing
a group of assassins invading the house and killing her
parents, effectively creates a sense of sympathy from the
audience towards her. Therefore, as for the audience we
are inclined and emotionally attached with Cataleya, and
support the idea of her growing up to be a stone cold
assassin. As a hero Cataleya restores the equilibrium by
killing her parents assassin.

3. Character
In Lucy it is evident that she is the hero. Like in Columbiana, the audience are
instantly inclined to the Lucy from the beginning. The idea that we see a young girl
who has traveled abroad from America to China, to deliver a mysterious briefcase,
emphasis that she is vulnerable. Moreover, Lucy is not aware of what is in the
mysterious briefcase, this depicts to the audience that she is naïve.
As Lucy is captured and turned into a drug mule, In this scene is where audience
begin to sympathize with Lucy. This close up shot of gives the audience of insight of
Lucy emotions at this current moment. The fact that she is tied up against three
men, looking helplessly we audience begin to emotionally incline with Lucy. We are
instantly concerned about her safety, and want her to escape from the danger in
order for her to seek revenge.
In these two scenes, Lucy is continuously portrayed has helpless as she is
victimized . However, as a role of a hero Lucy finds strengths and seeks to restore
the equilibrium by collecting all the harmful synesthetic drugs which has been
implemented inside people's bodies, and effectively destroys them and kills the
assassins and drugs dealers
4. Character
In the beginning of the Kill Bill trailer, the audience are introduced to a
high low angle shot of the Bride in coma lying in a hospital bed.
Automatically the audience are eager and concern to find out what had
resulted to the cause of her being in for four years. Additionally, the fact
that she is by herself with no visitors reinforces the idea that she is
lonely and vulnerable. Therefore, as for the audience we emotionally
feel sympathize with her as we also learn that she has lost her child
after being in comma for four years.
Furthermore, as the trailer unravels the audience are exposed to different
scenes of The Bride, fighting her opponent which are predominately male.
This idea effectively challenges the stereotypical perception of women in
society. This also creates the impression that the Bride is the hero because
she carries on preserving by men who supposedly look more stronger and
powerful then her
5. Excitement
All four movies Columbiana, Mr and Mrs Smith, Kill Bill
and Lucy engage to the audience by offering exciting
visual views and storylines to keep the audience
enticed to movie.
For example The Mr and Mrs Smith film is classified as
an action romance comedy, therefore the mix of genre
suggests that the pace of the film may fluctuate
depending on the state of equilibrium.
In the beginning of the trailer, the pace of the film
travels in a slow pace to emphasize a state of
calmness. There’s a consistent range of shorts cuts
and long shots, which allows the audience to focus
more on the characters expression and study what
type of people they are. A cross dissolve transition is
effectively used to show a continuity and a build up to
the disruption
6. Engima
What keeps the audience engaged and interested in the
trailer is the storyline. For examples in Mr and Mrs Smith,
the audience learn that they are both assassins who
works for competing agencies. However, the fact that in
the characters in the movie are not unaware of their
partners occupation makes the audience even more
eager to carry on the film. Likewise, in Kill Bill the
audience eventually learn that the people who were
attempting to overthrow the Bride was her own apparent
close friends, which leaves the audience in disbelief due
to the betrayal in the storyline.
7. Editing Colombiana
The Colombiana trailer communicates narrative just like every other trailer through the use of
shots and sounds. Due to the chosen shots of the narrative, the story is revealed. We know that
Cataleya is seeking revenge for the men that killed her parents when she was a child. Because
the audience is provided with the story there is an absence of enigma. There isn’t anything that
the audience need to find out other than will she get away with it however due to our knowledge
of revenge centred films , we already know that she will. With this being said, the trailer is still
effective in terms of the action provided. Referring to Todorovs narrative theory, the complication,
transference and struggle are shown. These are used to portray excitement, action and to
engage the audience.
The editing within the trailer is fast paced throughout. The number of shots are put together with
what is known as cuts. This is when one image is suddenly replaced by another, without a visible
transition.Everytime the shot changes is a cut. The main editing techniques in this trailer are
montages and wipes. In a montage, different images are assembled to build up an impression.
The impression given off by the montage in this trailer is that there is a lot of killing taking place. A
wipe is when one images replaces another with a distinct edge or separation between the shots.
Unlike a cut, the transition in a wipe is visible. There are frequent cross dissolves and fades
during the scenes of Cataleya as a child. One image dissolves into another to create a sense of
time passing by. In a fade an image gradually fades in or out. There is a match cut that is used to
show the growing of age of Cataleya the female protagonist.
8. Cutaways are used to interrupt a continuous scene
of action with an insert of a shot of something else.
This is used to give the audience a break from the
action. In this trailer there is a cutaway to a pan of
the city skyline. A common editing technique used
is continuity editing. This is when sequences are
edited so that time appears to flow, uninterrupted,
from shot to shot. It is used to create a sense of
reality.
9. Mr and Mrs Smith
In Mr and Mrs Smith the title and text are present throughout the trailer. From the start
the title and text reflect what the voice over is saying. They appear in shots with stills
from the film and on occasion on their own.
The narrative is communicated to us through dialogue, use of text and scenes. Just like
The colombiana trailer, the story is completely given away in the trailer therefore there
is an absence of enigma. With the information given out in the trailer the audience know
what to expect. Due to genre we know that they will live happily ever after however the
audience will watch it in order to see that happen.
At the beginning of the trailer there is a series of slow paced fades. This is done to
prepare the audience for the action. This is followed by a series of cuts and continuity
editing. There is a continuous use of wipes which establishes the states of equilibrium.
A cross dissolve is used also in effect with the wipes. A cutaway is used to break away
from the state of equilibrium to a shot of action and also the cutaways to the title
screens.
Overall the trailer is fairly slow
paced, I think this is done to
reinstate the romantic
element of the genre.
10. Editing
Kill Bill
The text used in the kill bill trailer is used as a
marketing technique. The first text given to the
audience is the distributor and then it reads ‘the 4th
film by Quentin Tarantino’.
11. This would instantly alert his fans to watch this movie. The text also
tells the audience who the main star is. At the end of the trailer the
text communicates narrative. The text tells us that in 2003 Uma
Therma will Kill Bill. This gives the audience an introduction of whats
happening. The use of her real name in reference to the title also
makes the audience feel closer to her as a character.
There aren’t a different range of editing techniques used in this
trailer compared to the others we looked at. Cuts are used
throughout the entire trailer except the beginning where there is a
series of fades. The editing was also slow paced. Although there is a
lack of editing techniques the trailer is still effective based on the
excitement that the title and text provide and the enigma .This trailer
communicates narrative just like the others however the absence of
the story creates a huge enigma for the audience. The audience
want to know who bill is and why she wants to kill him.
12. Lucy
Cross dissolves are used at the start to represent the
hallucination of the character. A number of very fast
paced cuts are also used. The effect it had on me was
that the character was being overwhelmed with
information and things had just happened so fast. It as if
the editing is used to make the audience experience
exactly what the characters are feeling. There are a
number of cutaways to buildings to give the audience a
break from the instant display of action. Wipes are used
to compliment the swift movements of the character on
screen. For example the shots used with the wipes are of
Lucy changing her appearance.
The audience is provided with Todorovs 3 middle steps of his theory
which display action however this is also parts of the narrative that
reveal the story. The enigma in this trailer is – how it all ends?
13. Sound
The use of sound effects in the 2014 Lucy trailer
enhances the action displayed on the screen, it gives the
action a more dramatic impact. What makes this an
effective trailer is the insight it gives the audience and an
idea of what violence to expect in the actual film. An
example of this can be heard as she’s fighting her
opponent, the sound is exaggerated as she grabs him
closer to her and pushes him away.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVt32qoyhi0 0:48
The dialogue used is brief and only gives the audience
enough information to get an idea of what the film is
about. 1:28
14. Excitement
This engages the audience and creates excitement and
anxiousness to see the film. This can be compared to 2011
Colombiana trailer in the aspect of using dialogue to give an
idea of the story. Though the dialogue is spaced out and
appears shorter than in Lucy, the choice of using rapid jump
cuts and images more or less tells the story and the dialogue in
a sense confirms it.
The soundtrack unlike other trailers stops when there is
dialogue and then continues as some trailers play the
soundtrack as well as having dialogue. The use of sound
effects fills this gap and is used to accompany the onscreen
minor action whereas the soundtrack accompanies important
clips from the film.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCxPLlFWdFo
15. In the Kill Bill 2003 trailer the use of a voice over
gives the trailer a more organised narrative. The
voice over appears to tell the story as well as the
action shown on the screen, which gives more
information about the film than seen in both trailers
of Lucy and Colombiana. However in the Mr and Mrs
Smith trailer a voice over is used also, it gives the
action shown on the screen more emphasis and
intrigues the audience, it creates an idea that the
film itself is just not an ordinary action film but
something bigger. The uses of sound effects are
similar to both Lucy and Colombiana and are used
exactly in the same to enhance the action displayed.
16. Engage the audience
The most important element in making a teaser trailer or
a trailer is to engage the audience and in order to
achieve this action needs to be displayed. Through my
research of the four trailers I’ve analysed one feature
they all have in common is the appearance of action, a
form of explosions or a source of violence. This is
continuously shown throughout but yet do not show the
audience too much, the source of action grabs the
audiences attention and intrigues them into watching the
film.
Examples of action presented in the trailers.
