This presentation was delivered at a SHED (Scottish Higher Education Developers) CPD event in November 2014. The focus is on Open Badges as a digital rewards for CPD and outlines the development of the Jisc RSC Scotland digital practitioner series of Open Badges. Feedback from LOL participants
“It was nice to see a badges scheme in operation. I really did
think that collecting badges incentivised my participation.”

An Open Badge is a digital reward
Gives recognition of skills including soft skills - be difficult to document – good for evidencing skills to future employers
Motivate people to participate & contribute (in a course, initiative, forum)
Align to a standard developed by an international community
Underpinned by the Open Badge Infrastructure (OBI) developed by Mozilla
Digital credentials earners can display online
Earners store their badges in a badgepack.
Earners can then choose to add their badges or groups of badges to online platforms (e.g. blogs, professional profiles etc).
Jisc RSC Scotland have developed 3 series of Open Badges:
Digital Practitioner Series – talk about in the next slide
Digital Innovator Series – awarded for our iTech Case Study Contributors, Forum Contributors & Webinar Contributors
Digital Leadership Series – awarded to those who engage with us on topics such as our awarded to those who engage with us on topics such as our Assessment Summit, Open Badges Design Days, OBSEG group
Jisc RSC Scotland Online Courses – Learning Online (LOL)
3 courses currently available in the series:
Online Communication & e-Tutoring
eAssessment for Learning
Digital Literacies for Digital Learning
The LOL courses are 2 or 3 week fully-online courses delivered via Moodle. During the courses we build a community of learners and the courses are designed to encourage collaborative and peer learning.
We award a Completer badges to those who successfully complete all activites on the course
As an added incentive we also have a peer awarded ‘influencer’ badge to recognise those participants who have made a significant contribution to the course
Feedback from these courses has been very positive – and the standard of contribution is extremely high

OB Criteria – link on the OB image would take people to the criteria page
Information about the course
What participants had to do to complete the course including the course matrices detailing criteria for successfully completing the Journal activity and forum activity
LOL Open Badges – Influencer Badge
Each LOL course includes the opportunity for a peer awarded Influencer Open Badge
Voting rules
At the end of the course, participants vote for peers they believe helped to influence the learning of themselves and / or the group as a whole. They are asked to consider, and to vote for any peers they believe have met, the following:
Participant made a significant and constructive contribution to discussions
Participant provided reflections and / or links and / or additional information pertinent to the course subject
Participant enhanced the experience of the course for the group and / or myself through their contributions
Participant demonstrated the principles of netiquette in their contributions to the course
Anyone receiving 3+ votes from their peers, and successfully completing the course, will receive the Influencer badge
Open Badges – Feedback from LOL participants
Feedback on including open badges in our courses has been positive – quote from participant on the eAfL course.
Have the option to gain an Open Badge does seem to motivate course participants and having the option of a peer awarded influencer badge does introduce an added incentive and the standard of contribution from participants in these courses is extremely high.
Word Cloud
Keen to expand the digital practitioner series as we recognised the potential open badges have:
For encouraging engagement with Jisc RSC Scotland service
For recongnising and rewarding CPD
Motivating and encouraging participation
Recongnising the contribution of peers
Rewarding the sharing of good practice
Demonstrate digital engagement and enhance digital identity
Mapping a Digital Practitioner Open Badge Pathway
Conversation at Open Badge Design Day when my former colleague Grainne and I had a chance to focus on our Digital Practitioner Series
What influenced it?
Training needs (ETNA)
Standards (UKPSF, Prof Standards for FE Lecturers)
Frameworks such as Mozilla Dig Lit Framework
Resulted in our LOL courses
We also started to think about synergies and possible pathways
Expanding the pathway
Mapping to existing CPD Provision
As well as the online courses, we offer face-to-face workshops and a number of other virtual sessions.
Current Digital Practitioner Pathway
We have had various iterations of this diagram
Our f2f workshops & virtual sessions feed into an aggregated badge – CPD: Technology for Learning
LOL Completer badges feed into a LOL Super Completer badge
Once both aggregated badges have been obtained then the Super Digital Practitioner Badge awarded
Generic workshop badge
Stating point & learning curve as we developed the badge criteria which resulted in developing information that is included in other workshops & virtual sessions badges
Encompasses a range of workshops – topics explored include e-Assessment, Accessibility & Inclusion, Social Media, Learning Platforms & e-Resources
Collaborative effort – brainstorming ideas really helped
Additional benefit of the process was that it helped us identify core aspects that we wanted to ensure were included in each workshop such as Inclusive Practice, e-Safety & Copyright
Evidence Templates
We had decided early on that we didn’t want to award badges for attending CPD
Instead we have devised ‘evidence templates’ which will need to be successful completed before badges are awarded
Example of Workshop Completer Evidence Template
Different templates developed for each badge
Also developed template exemplars
We’re also keen on sharing exemplars of good practice identified via the evidence templates with the sector so we’ve given people the option to agree to this
Update information about our Open Badge Series – current thoughts of new website structure
Needed to think through how we would display information about the new badges
Where would people access the evidence templates & exemplars?
Where do current open badges sit in this structure
What else do we need?
Badges Help section to include:
Instructions for accepting your badge
Instructions for displaying your badge
This area still needs some development
Linking to a shared collection in badges backpack
Would be good to have be able to embed badges directly into webpages – there used to be a wordpress plugin but doesn’t work now
Other useful info
Considerations
Badge design – we had an existing look and feel for the series so had to ensure our badges fitted with this – spent a bit of time ensuring this was the case – more things to consider that I thought there would have been!
Consider why the badges are being awarded – in our case we didn’t want to award badges for workshop attendance but wanted participants to engage with workshop content and reflect on how this might be applied to their practice
Development of evidence templates – considered various options for gathering evidence including online forms. Opted for word docs in the end as these can be saved – we thought online forms had a danger of people getting frustrated as data could be lost before they submitted the form
Aggregated badges – 3 in this series – hopefully this will motivate people to engage in our CPD and they will want to work towards the Super Digital Practitioner badge
Still need to update our issuing workflows – ensure the team know their responsibilities and have a clear process for issuing badges
Still refining our information about the badge series – need to not overcomplicate things!
